FLOW HIVE PRESENTATION Byron Bay High School Design and Technology, Business Studies, Project Based Learning (PBL) and Agriculture students were lucky enough to attend a presentation with CEO and Inventor of the Flow Hive, Cedar Anderson, on Monday 23 October in the Performing Arts Centre . Cedar presented his story of how he and his father developed a new way of collecting honey - a more efficient way. He spoke about the Flow Hive that he developed into an award winning design and how his design has been produced into a bee hive (Flow Hive). The innovative design can extract honey, tapping directly from the hive without the need to remove frames and disturb bees. Students had a fantastic opportunity to see the passion that Cedar has for the invention, design, the environment, bee keeping and his business, which he is continuing to develop. I would like to thanks Cedar and the Flow Hive team for their donation of a Flow Hive to the Byron Bay High School Agriculture department and a warm thanks to the staff and teachers that made the day possible. Mr Mark Hernage - TAS Teacher

2017 JAPAN STUDY TRIP Tadaima! On Tuesday last week we returned home after an amazing 19 days in Japan. Our highlights were a seven night homestay with our sister school in Okutama, a three night homestay with our sister school in Nara, catching the shinkansen, exploring countless temples and gardens, leaving behind a prayer for peace in Hiroshima, shopping in Osaka, and trying all of the delicious food. We discovered our karaoke tune-belting skills, too! Our students learned so much over the course of the trip. They got to try out their Japanese, embrace the culture, and impressed us with their open minded, enthusiastic and positive attitudes. You certainly did Byron Bay High School proud. Can’t wait to see what adventures are around the corner for our 2018 Japan study trip! Miss Kristina Ballard, Japanese Teacher

YEAR 9 AGRICULTURE In Term 3 the wonderful Year 9 Agriculture class completed their valuable Vegetable Garden Project Based Learning. The students successfully investigated and produced a variety of vegetables to eat using organic techniques and pictured are some of the keen gardeners! The class undertook a corn growing trial using two different systems for seed germination. The students then planted their corn seedlings in garden plots to observe their growth and development. They are now looking forward to a delicious harvest later this term! Mrs Jennifer Woodward, Agriculture Teacher

RACISM - NO WAY! Anti-Racism Contact Officers - ARCO Any students or parents who have concerns about racism in the school may direct their concerns to either Mr Joe Swinson or Ms Tracie Lee. Each school has at least one trained Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO) to facilitate the complaints handling process. The ARCO is an impartial facilitator, not an advocate for students, parents or community members. The ARCO is the central point of contact for complaints of racism. They record complaints and resolution methods and maintain all data in line with the policy guidelines. Ms Tracie Lee and Mr Joe Swinson

VISUAL ARTS So many opportunities and fun experiences for our Visual Art students are happening this term in the CAPA department. Year 7 students have been working on a range of interesting and engaging activities this term. We have some incredible musical instruments based on Picasso’s Cubist movement. These are currently being exhibited in Ms Marcus’ office and in the CAPA department. There is also a collaborative installation artwork project underway that expresses their concerns about the pollution that ends up in our local waterways. Students have made sculptures of fish from sticks, raffia, paper and rubbish that was found on the school grounds. The rubbish is embedded in the fish as if they had been swallowed. The artworks communicate the fragile nature of our waterways and places importance on us to be responsible custodians and to care about the way we treat its fragile eco system. This installation along with the Year 9’s ‘Spirit of the land’ paintings will be exhibited starting November and over the summer at the Byron Bay Library so we hope students and their families will pop in and see this amazing exhibition. The Year 7 winning entry is being exhibited in the front office. The Bangalow Show is around the corner and this year’s theme is ‘Cows’. We encourage all Visual Art students to enter and take part. Students can also enter work into the general sections of art, craft and photography. Year 7 will be working on artworks to enter into the ‘cow’ category so please take time out on the weekend of 17 November to pop by and see Byron Bay High Schools entries and enjoy the show. More information about the Bangalow show can be found here http://www.bangalowshow.com.au/. Speaking of cows, CAPAL have some exciting new ones … read on for more information. Beyond this, a fantastic opportunity for creative students to participate in a cultural art program is about to begin. Thank you to Ms Eke for overseeing this exciting arts program. More information on this will be made available and selected students will begin the program soon. Ms Linda Robson, Head Teacher CAPAL

CAPAL COWs CAPAL have been blessed with a brand new set of COMPUTERS on wheels or COWS as they are fondly referred to. These COWS have enabled us to plan highly engaging, interactive lessons with our Language and Creative and Performing Arts learners. The students are loving it!!! This includes the challenging task of learning to type in Japanese script. Ms Tracie Lee, CAPAL Teacher

The Future is Ours

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT NEWS Term 4 has got off to a flying start with the space that the outgoing Year 12 Music students took up being quickly filled by the new Year 12’s and below. The Music department is a hive of activity again with students sparking up new collaborations and working in established groups as well as on solo acts.

This week saw the first lunch time outdoor music concert (now titled ‘Day 4 Music’) outside the CAPA block, with the new Year 12 VET Entertainment students taking over the running of the production, setting up and running the audio system and presenting/managing the event. They have made a great start and are well on the way to becoming the ‘Dream-Team’. The session saw Lachlan Buckley (guitar), Sacha Jackson (drums) and Curtis Cloake (Bass); supported by Mr Reade on keys, perform an Albert Collins Funk Rock piece to get the groove going. Next up we had two songs, including an original, from our talented new arrival Jake Harpaz showing off his vocal skills and supporting himself on his mini carbon-fibre guitar! Following that, we heard an original from Abbey Haworth supported by our new School Captain, Domenica Wenban, on cello. Our ‘MC’ Clayton Ramirez treated us to a great rap performance of very recently written lyrics to beats made by Josh Denholm. The closing slot was beautifully filled with an original by the ever professional Tilka Fossmale who never fails to impress.

As teachers here, we are always humbled by the talent we continue to experience at this school and love the way that they are appreciated, encouraged and respected by the student and staff audience. The very next day saw two of the acts performing at the Lighthouse Assembly with the National Anthem proudly performed by Hayden Keevers, supported by Mr Baker on guitar.

The School Band continues to be well attended on Thursday lunchtimes and we are working on a piece to be performed in week 6 at the performance assembly. All students should attend all two practices between now and then!

The mural, painted across the entire interior wall of the café depicts a young girl suspended in a blue ocean or pool and was painted by Carla Zapel. Congratulations to Ruby Jeffries, a Byron Bay High School student in Year 7 who won the 12 years old and under category and $250. An amazing achievement Ruby, well done! Byron Bay High School Year 10 students, Star Maple, Sarah Apitz and Leo Piper, were also on the judges highly commended list for the Under 18’s category. SPORTING EXCELLENCE GROUP Sporting Excellence had the opportunity to participate in a session with Ballina Cross Fit this week. The session was designed to speak with the owners of the gym who were elite athletes themselves as high school students, Erin, a tennis player and Lindsay, a gymnast. They gave our students advice on what they wished they had known as young athletes, ie. how to look after your body in your sport using strength training and then gave us a smashing session to finish off. Some of our athletes are finding muscles they never knew they had! Thanks to Ballina Cross Fit for spending the time to talk to our up and coming athletes. Mrs Kelley Caoyonan, Sports Organiser (Sporting Excellence Program Coordinator )
