STARS of 4th Prague Patchwork Meeting – Rita Berghuis

The 3rd PPM in 2009 was the first time Rita Berghuis was at a PPM. Rita

Berghuis is a Dutch quilter and teaches patchwork and quilting since 1989.

Last year she exhibited in Val d´Argent, France at the 15th Patchwork

Meeting overthere.

It was a great pleasure for Rita to be in Prague April 2009 and she loves to

come again. This time she will bring the “Mensch und Meer”-quilts from

quiltgroup MeerArt. This travelling-exhibition will be shown the very last time

in Prague at the 4th PPM. How did this exhibition start?

Helene Fischer from Germany contacted Rita Berghuis from Holland and they

decided to plan a travelling exhibition, “Man and Sea”. The first show was in

the summer of 2006 in Carolinensiel, Germany, at the Deutsches

Sielhafenmuseum and now the exhibition ends in Prague at the 4th PPM. The

“Mensch und Meer”-quilts all have something to do with “Man and Sea”.

There are quilts is about fishing: fishing boats and water or waves; there are

quilts about holidays at the beach: fins, sunset at the beach; sometimes

quilts tell a story: like the quilts about the flood of 1953 in Holland. Rita

Berghuis and Helene Fischer will take 30 quilts with them.

The MeerArt-group of quilters has members from Germany and from

Holland. The next travelling MeerArt-exhibition is already planned and is

themed: “Sea Sailing…” to start this summer in Carolinensiel, Germany. (Look

again and teach about experimenting with text on a quilt: Writing, quilting

and dyeing. There are several ways to play with text on a quilt, it depends on

what you want to say. But even if you only want to make a fantasy-text it´s

This year Rita will come again and teach about experimenting with text on a quilt: Writing, quilting and dyeing.

There are several ways to play with text on a quilt, it depends on what you want to say. But even if you only want

to make a fantasy-text it´s okay. Play with more than one layer is fun. Start with a plain piece of fabric or a

collage, fill out with a (given) machinequilting-pattern, and start. How to machinequilt will be shown. When the

first quilting layer is finished, student will make another layer, with screenprint dye. Students will make try-outs,

and start a piece which ends up 30 x 30 cm. (Or 4 pieces of 15 x 15 cm). If you have any questions: feel free to

Healthy Lighting

under natural spectrum lighting is way more efficient and enjoyable than under common lighting. A whole range of table and floor lamps will be displayed and available.

Since the very beginning of mankind's existence on Earth, we have been used to sunlight during the daytime and darkness during the night. Just a hundred and twenty years ago people spent most of the day working in sunlight and went to bed after dark. Nowadays, most of us live the "modern" western lifestyle. We work in artificially illuminated rooms, turning our lights on after dark in order to stay up longer. It is not a widely-known fact but, at present, we are able to make fluorescent tubes which produce light that is 98 % equivalent to sunlight. However, for cost reasons, the market is dominated by manufacturers of tubes that produce light that is merely 80 % similar to sunlight, which is also the minimum level stipulated for workplace lighting. Compact fluorescent tubes are even worse. Nevertheless, a whole range of research has shown that the color of the light, as well as the level of its similarity to sunlight, has a measurable impact on how people feel, on their work efficiency, the number of mistakes they make and on how soon they get tired. Light with a colder tone has clearly been shown to have a more stimulating effect. Moreover, light with an optimum rendering of colors does not cause as much stress and fatigue as unnatural lighting.

Czech Dolls‘ Club

Český panenkový klub (Czech Dolls’ Club) is a civic association established by coincidence as well as need to share

joy from lovely and beautiful products. Those, who open the door to the dolls world will figure out, that it is an

independent, widely developed area of textile art. It is true, that dolls’ sewing is closely connected with other

textile techniques – beginning with clothes sewing, country work, patchwork, cloth painting as well as for example

fiber art, quilting etc.

In the beginning was fascination by dolls made by one Australian textile artist, followed by cooperation and

friendship. I was thrilled by her suggestion to establish a Dolls’ Club in the Czech republic, however, this meant a

lot of preceding activities. First of all, there had to be someone who would devote time to dolls sewing, study and

gain experience. For more than a year, I devoted all my time to sewing one doll after the other. From the easiest

ones to the more complicated ones, consisting of complicated cuts, and to sculpting. Afterwards, workshops with

those who shared my enthusiasm followed. The results were amazing – good designs, passion and skillful

workshop attendants did not only lead to fabulous products but also towards creation of a new social group of

people with pure hearts, sense for dreaming and memories. Dolls full of current life energy came up, others were

reflecting memories of their authors. Some of the dolls made us smile, other remembered us of our childhood.

The workshop attendants soon turned into body and soul “doll makers”. We knew there might me others, who

would find joy in our dolls and so we gingerly applied to exhibit in Prague Patchwork Meeting in 2009. Cheered up

by the echoes, we decided to undergo all the official steps needed to establish the civic association Czech Dolls’

Club.

The doll makers are meeting for workshops in the Bernina Creative Center, where their first dolls were born.

Needle in their hands, they are preparing further projects. Also a charity action will be presented within the next

exposition, planned for the autumn.

Maybe one final though. Dolls guide us through our whole life. Sewing them helps us to explore ourselves, dolls

are companions, who never blame us and always wait passionately, no matter from where and when we would

return.

Czech patchwork stars – JANA HARMACHOVÁ

I never intended to become a personality in the field of patchwork. Actually, I never intended to become a personality at all. I am not exactly young anymore, and my parents brought me up to be rather modest and submissive. The truth is they were very busy, and probably did so unintentionally. But they certainly taught to me to do anything that I do with the diligence and determination to finish it. One thing I could not learn from them, however, is my natural sociability. As both of my parents are quite shy, where this aspect of my personality came from is anybody’s guess. My mother says that I started talking from a very early age and still didn’t stop. All the teachers in nursery school loved me because I was able to entertain all the children around with my stories; real, or made-up when all the real ones were told already!

Together with extensive speaking I was very keen on making things. The need to produce something to express myself was encouraged by my Art teacher. She was an amazing person, and the most important things she taught me were finding joy from what you make on your own, and that in order to make something worthwhile you have to work hard enough and be patient. It was a coincidence I found patchwork a few years ago, and since then I have become hooked. Eventually I left all the paints and pieces of potter's clay to dry, and patchwork was the reason why. Making quilts is a relaxing activity for me, and once finished they hopefully warm up my friends and relatives as well as making them feel good and comfortable. There are endless new designs, techniques or materials in patchwork, and there are still new and tempting challenges to face.

And what is the best thing about patchwork? The people who make it. I really like them and I feel great among those ladies. They have their own opinions and meaning of beauty. Generally they are mothers and grandmothers first; they can talk for hours about their hobby, but family will always be the most important part of their lives. It is lovely company to have and I am honored to be part of it. And what is my place in this society? Maybe it is in a museum. I am still not able to separate my work as an art from its practical use, I am still fascinated by the range of colours, patterns and fabrics.

Patchwork friendships – Litomyšl - Roden

The thought that my collection will lose its purpose when I will switch to art quilts only scares me. To be honest, collecting the various kinds of fabric is one of the beauties of patchwork for me. There are so many colors and textures in one closet. After the last visit at Jana Sterbova, I realized that traditional patchwork would not be enough for me, and sooner or later I will have to try the textural, plastic and three-dimensional techniques. I think I am already excited and when it arrives in the peaceful South I will be ready.

For now however I make, and love making, traditional patchwork. But if there is something I enjoy even more than making patchwork, it is writing about patchwork. My first book was named “The Summer at Aunt Jane’s”, based on the name of a fabric featured in the quilt on the front page. Now I have finished my second book; “Patchwork - Ideas and Inspirations”. It is not about the basic techniques, but instead about where you can find inspiration for your projects. I really enjoyed working on this book because I made it on my own, and in writing it I learned a lot about graphic design, typography and the possibilities of photography use. I hope you will like it the same way as the first one, and in advance I thank you for your willingness to read and work with my books.

Our quiltgroup started in 2000 with the preparation of a quiltexhibition in Litomysl.

The group exist of six women who make quilts since a long time.

Once a month we meet each other to quilt or preparing the visit of women from Litomysl.

We make traditional and modern quilts by hand or machine. Every now and than one of us participates in a

workshop. Afterwards she shares the new technique with the rest of the group.

Every other year we welcome women from Litomysl in Roden to meet each other and to share techniques. The

other year we visit Litomysl with great pleasure!

When quilting you have to follow these basic rules:

1) Always buy fabric no matter how much you already have

2) Sew All Day and All Night absolutely no cooking allowed

3) Use a lot of spit for tiny droplets of blood, this always makes the quilt personal

4) Always start a new quilt before the last one is finished, this requires you to go back to step # 1

Sewing machines for the workshops were provided by PFAFF. Sewing machines for the workshop of Ina Statescu were provided by BERNINA.

Courses and workshops will be available. Lectures on traditional as well as contemporary techniques will be brought by well known teachers from abroad.

All applicants have to submit their names, mail address and phone number, title of the workshop, name of the lecturer and symbol of the workshop (W1 - W11). Registration is valid only after the payment is received. Foreign participants can pay right after their arrival to Prague in cash. Organizers reserve themselves the right to change the program.

WOVEN NINEPATCH

Another simple and beginners‘ suitable pattern creating an „optical illusion“ is here. You will be surprised how quickly it goes; you will surely finish the top of your quilt top over the weekend. The woven effect is achieved by sticking to alternating two shades of one color (dark and light green in our example patch). The central nine-patch square may be cut out from clothes with pictorial motives as well (cars, dolls, teddy-bear etc.) Another variation may be an application or embroidery. The other colorful option is based on the same sewing technique and “interlacing” , however it looks more subtle due to the small squares position.
