Thoughts from your president! Happy holidays! I hope everybody had a good Thanksgiving and has their Christmas shopping started. I would like to invite everybody to this month’s December 11th meeting. The topic this month is Thermostatic mixing valves & Hot Water Recirculation, presented by Dave Shugars. We will have a special Christmas dinner @ Mangiamos with a surprise or two. We are finishing the year out strong and already looking forward to next year. Our attendance has been good, but could be better. I think we have some nice topics coming up, Emergency Showers & Eye Washes, Elevator Pump Systems, plus tour of Bell’s brewery, and don’t forget our golf outing in May. we need our membership to bring in their co-workers, we need new members and old ones to come back. Lets have a good turn out in December. Please RSVP as soon as possible, so that we can get correct count for dinner. Also, if you RSVP and change your mind for what ever reason, PLEASE cancel so that we don’t have to pay for dinners we don’t need, thanks. Merry Christmas, ----don

Hello everyone, Decembers meeting we have special guest Dave Shugars with the R.L. Deppmann Company. The topic for the month is “Thermostatic Mixing Valves &

Hot Water Recirculation”.

Unfortunately I will not be present for Decembers meeting but will thinking of you all while sitting on a beach in the southwest pacific enjoying 80+

temperatures.

I will miss the awesome comradery and excellent food at Mangiamo Italian

Restaurant.

It’s hard to believe but the International Code Council (ICC) is now posting significant code changes to the 2015 ICC codes, however most states are not yet

using these codes but have just begun using the 2012 version.

Proposed changes for the 2018 ICC codes are due January of 2015….Whew, time sure does fly. I find it rather difficult to propose changes to the 2018 code when we haven’t even seen the 2015 Code yet, maybe they plan it this way so we don’t have time to review and propose changes? This is just a heads up, if there is something in the 2012 or 2015 code that you have strong feelings about changing now is the time to act and submit your proposed changes for the 2018

ICC codes.

As for Michigan, the State will be reviewing the approved 2015 IPC for adoption by our State. The review will probably start sometime this coming spring and

adoption usually doesn’t happen until sometime late in 2016 or even 2017.

Quite often I hear comments and complaints regarding various Plumbing Code regulations, rules and requirements, yet never see proposals for change during the code review sessions. Now is the time to gather your thoughts and work on your proposed code changes for the 2015 Michigan Codes. To help assist you in your code change proposal efforts, I’ve attached to this newsletter the instructions and a sample from the 2012 Michigan Building Code Change Proposal process….These instructions can be found on the State Bureau of Construction Codes web site www.michigan.gov/bcc I did a search for “proposed code changes” and found the sample form, keep in mind that this sample is for the previous 2012 review process and will eventually be updated

for the 2015 version.

We all have so much to be thankful for. Some of you are hunters and recently bagged your trophy deer; congratulations. Most of us spent quality time with our families and friends over this past Thanksgiving Day break. Some used a design tip they recently learned by attending their local ASPE Chapter meeting that got them

through the final stage of a plumbing design project.

I think it’s safe to say we’re all thankful for the last 4 years of dedicated service Jim Kendzel gave to ASPE. I was fortunate enough to speak with Jim at the recent PMI (Plumbing Manufacturers International) Fall Conference in Chicago, IL. We wish him the best in his new role as Vice President of Certification at the American

Health Information Management Association. www.ahima.org.

The PMI Conference was well attended by many industry notables involved in the manufacturing of plumbing fixtures and/or their components. As well as media

and certification bodies.

The conference started with an Executive Panel Discussion featuring key representatives from Bradley, Delta Faucet, Kohler, Moen, Symmons, T&S Brass and TOTO. Bill Kurtis, acclaimed documentary host, producer and broadcaster

moderated the event.

We also heard from PMI Consultants who closely monitor what legislative action is taking place in Washington D.C. and California. We know this will eventually affect each and every one of us. Be sure to read the many articles that are sure to

populate your upcoming monthly plumbing magazines.

Not only was I thankful to have attended PMI but I was also equally fortunate to attend the PPI (Plastics Pipe Institute) Semi-Annual Meeting in Southlake, TX. It was here I learned about the many opportunities there are for plastic piping

systems.

PPI has numerous divisions. There is the Building & Construction Division; they just completed the PEX Design Guide 2nd Edition. It’s available for download www.plasticpipe.org/publications/pex_handbook.html. Be sure to add this to your document library. It contains everything you’ve ever wanted to know about PEX,

including things you’ve never thought of.

There is also the Conduit; Corrugated; Energy Piping Systems; Municipal & Industrial Divisions as well as the Technical Committee. PPI has produced a wealth

of knowledge for you and it’s at your fingertips.

Do yourself a favor and bookmark the www.safeplumbing.org and www.plasticpipe.org websites and visit them often. They’re both a valuable

resource for the plumbing industry.

We can all be thankful for the addition of a new Chapter in Region 2; the Toronto

ASPE Chapter. I hope to give a full report on this in my article next month.

Let me leave you here with one last thing I’m thankful for; our upcoming Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s Holidays. No matter how you celebrate, be sure to reflect on your own personal accomplishments this past year before reaching out and sharing your good fortune with everyone around you. I’m starting out by

sharing mine with you.

MICHIGAN BUILDING CODE CHANGE PROPOSAL INSTRUCTIONS All Proposals Must Be Received by November 9, 2012

Be sure to format your proposal and include all information as indicated in instructions below. Your proposal should be entered on page 3 as a separate file. Use a separate form for each proposal submitted.

Indicate appropriate Michigan Code(s) associated with this Proposal.

Note: All code change proposals received will receive an acknowledgment by approximately November 16,

2012. Please contact Shannon Matsumoto at 517.241.6312 if you do not receive an acknowledgment by

November 16, 2012.

Proposals should be sent via regular mail, facsimile or email. An e-mail submittal is preferred, including an

electronic version, in Microsoft Word. Send to:

PROPOSAL FORMATTING:

Show the proposal (see form on page 3) using strikeout, bold underline (new language) format. At the beginning of each section, one of the following instruction lines are also needed: •Revise as follows •Add new text as follows •Delete and substitute as follows •Delete without substitution The only formatting that is needed is BOLDING, STRIKEOUT AND UNDERLINING. Please do not provide

additional formatting such as tabs, columns etc. as this will be done by BCC. DO NOT USE THE TRACK

CHANGES OPTION, AUTOMATIC NUMBERING, OR ANY OTHER ADVANCED FORMATTING TOOLS

PROVIDED BY WORD.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

The following items are required to be included in your proposal Proposals without all required information will be returned to the submitter:

1. Reproduce the entire section for which an amendment is proposed.

2. Sufficient supporting information to indicate how the proposal is intended to affect the intent and application

of the Code.

3. Clearly state the purpose of the proposed code change, (i.e., clarifies the Code; revise outdated material;

substitute new or revised material for current provisions of the Code; add new requirements to the Code; delete

current requirements, etc.).

4. Justify changing the current Code provisions, stating why the proposal is superior to the current provisions of

the Code. Proposals which add or delete requirements shall be supported by a logical explanation which

clearly shows why the current Code provisions are inadequate or overly restrictive, specifies the shortcomings

of the current Code provisions and explains how such proposals will improve the Code.

5. Substantiation for the proposed code change based on technical information.

6. A bibliography of any substantiating material submitted with the code change proposal.

COST IMPACT: Provide a statement on the cost impact of the code change proposal:

1) The code change proposal will increase the cost of construction; or 2) The code change proposal will not increase the cost of construction. 3) The code change proposal will reduce the cost of construction. 3) Provide a detailed analysis of the cost increase or cost decrease.
