It’s a Set Up…..

After being on leave last week I have returned to discover that my Give Me Five For Kids jar is overflowing and all other staff have minimal contributions. I smell a rat!! I hope you all enjoyed my rendition of the Chicken Dance whilst wearing a chicken suit today as much as I enjoyed performing it, thank you to all students who joined in with me.

I would like to thank our students, parents and staff for getting behind this important community fundraiser whilst having a bit of fun along the way.

Dance Festival

I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Lower North Coast Dance Festival on Monday night to see our dance group perform at The Glasshouse. Our students ‘Thriller’ performance was outstanding. I love seeing our students participate and gain heaps of enjoyment and satisfaction from such experiences. Thanks to all students for representing our school so beautifully and to Ms Joyce and Mrs Marks for their organisation and support.

Managing Our Emotions and Calming Down

I would like to reference information from our Highway Heroes Parent Notebook which refers to some skills in helping us calm down when needing to self-regulate our behaviour.

‘The ability to Calm Down is a top-drawer, high priority self-regulation skill – particularly in the excitable, impulsive and energetic world of children. And it’s not only for those positive emotional states, it is also the Hero of dealing with anger, jealousy and worry. It’s a foundational skill in Mental Hygiene – for children and adults.’

Following is a good breathing technique which is a simple way to support.

Step 1 – be very quiet – no talking.

Step 2 – Focus your eyes on something – even a tiny speck on the wall.

Step 3 – Breathe in and blow out like you’re blowing a bubble. Careful – don’t pop it! Do this 3 times.

Step 4 – Use calm Supa Thinkin. ‘I’m OK. It’s not that bad. Calm down.’

Step 5 – Relax your neck, your shoulders, your arms and your legs. Make them loose and floppy. Repeat until you’re calm.

Take care Brett

On Monday 4th June, 33 athletes represented Port Macquarie Public School at the Lower North Coast Cross Country at Kempsey. 8, 9, 10 and AWD (Athletes with Disabilities) completing the 2km run and 11, 12 and 13 years athletes completing the 3km run. Everyone competed well and put in an outstanding effort. We were fortunate to have four of our students finishing in the top ten:

Marley 8th in the 10yrs boys

Danny 8Th in the 11yrs boys

Kaitlin 6th in the 12/13yrs girls

Brinlen 1st in the AWD Junior girls

Of these Kaitlin and Brinlen were successful in being selected to represent the Lower North Coast at Nana Glen on Wednesday 13 June.

Congratulations to all our athletes and an extra big thank you to the parents/carers who supported them, especially those who car pooled and offered transport.

As part of the Give me 5 for Kids fundraising, the SRT organised a competition to raise money for this event. Over the last few weeks the SRT students have sat at the voting table collecting money for this worthy cause. The children (and parents) were so excited to cast their votes.

The children thought carefully……..and by a landslide the winner (or should we say loser) was Mr Thurgate. He proudly wore the chicken suit with pride and displayed his limited dancing abilities and needed the whole school to help him out.

Thanks to Mrs Hill, Mrs Mayer, Mr Sarno, Mrs Bultitude and Mr Cleary who were prepared to dress up and dance for this worthy cause.

A special thankyou to Vicki from ‘Victoria’s Costume Hire’ at Port Macquarie for donating the chicken suit for this important event. Visit her website or Facebook page if you are looking for a costume, there are many to choose from.

Thank you again Mr Thurgate for being such a good sport. The funds raised through this event will help children who visit our local hospitals.

A big thank you to all the students who dressed up as their favourite Sports Person and donated gold coins. We will publish how much was raised by our school community for this annual fundraiser in the next newsletter.
