Holiday Bazaar Scores Big Success
By Karen Goss This year’s Holiday Bazaar raised $1,700!
We accomplished this through table rentals, raffle
ticket sales, and generous donations made toward new
signage, advertising and raffle prizes.
The event could not have happened without the
support of many volunteers. I would like to thank Don-
na Avina for co-chairing with me. Her behind the
scenes promotion of the event through social media was
greatly helpful as well as her donation of paid advertis-
ing.
Thank you to Kate Bayne for donating a beautiful
gift basket as well as paying for new Holiday Bazaar
signs and to Camille Lockling for her support, leader-
ship and sense of humor! Also to vendor Bernadette
Ducasse for donating one of her beautiful handmade
quilts for our raffle.
To Renata Pilotto, Arlene Williams, Kathy Parlet,
Nancy Ellis, Jean Peterson, Dick McCullen, Roger
Brousseau, and Dan Allen, thank you for your time and
energy. It was greatly appreciated.
Congratulations to our raffle winners! Billie ($25
Happy Lobby gift card), Karen Woodcock ($50 JoAnn
gift card), Irene (Handmade quilt), Jean Peterson ($60
Barnes and Noble basket), and Orlene ($15 Regal gift
basket).
If anyone is interested in becoming an event com-
mittee member in the future, contact me, Karen Goss, or
Renata Pilotto sold raffle tickets during the Bazaar.

Veteran’s Recognition Reception Honors Member Veterans
The Center’s new Veteran’s Recognition Wall has
been installed and the reception honoring those on the
wall was held on Wednesday, November 14.
Families and friends gathered to show their respects
and enjoy some war stories with each other, have some
cake and coffee, and to visit with each other. Featured on
the wall are 23 vets from WWI, WWII, Korea and Vi-
etnam, and the years in peacetime. Someday maybe even
Iraq and Afghanistan.
Donna Avina, the project coordinator, says there is
room on the wall for more veteran’s pictures and their sto-
ries. The wall is expected to grow and expand with photos
of yourself, spouses, parents, or your children who have
served.
“If you or the vets in your family don’t have a mili-
tary picture, you may submit a current photo, or write up a
story about you or your vet, and we will frame your story
for the wall,” Donna stated.
To the right is just a small sampling of the vets cur-
rently on the Recognition Wall. Below are some photos
from the reception.
A special thank you to Dick McCullen, the Center’s
volunteer maintenance supervisor, who hung all the
pictures. Without him, the wall would not exist!

Workshop: December 13, 1-3 Sign-up on Center’s hallway clipboards
It is simply amazing to me
that we are going into another
month!
Truthfully, I had no idea what
keeps a Senior Center functioning.
When I took this position I was
really nervous about making sure I
got everything covered. It did not
take me long to realize the key
word is delegate, delegate. I finally saw what the
top of my desk looks like after two months.
It gives me great pleasure to recognize how
many talented members there are that are eager to
take on some activities. So far all I see is success
with some of my choices. Seems to me that there
are several people waiting to step in.
Donna Avina, who is our newletter lady,
worked with someone I asked to help her with the
Holiday Bazaar. It was a great success. Our new
maintenance guy stepped up and helped Donna
Avina with our Veterans Wall. We had several
people attend. The veterans and their families truly
appreciated the effort.
I recently monitored a 65th Birthday Party
along with Jean Peterson for almost 9 hours. They
had a very large group who partied hard. I asked 3
new members to join us that evening. What I am
getting at is asking new members to step up and
help with activities in the Center is a stretch for
me. It does not come easy.
It is refreshing to see people that have not par-
ticipated before step up to the plate. I am so grate-
ful to them and it takes a lot of stress off of me. By
no means am I omitting the other long term mem-
bers who help. I am again trying to say we sure
could use your help as members.
It is a pleasure to have you share the responsi-
bilities of our Center. New faces, ideas and energy.
This is your Center and it needs you.
Happy Thanksgiving. I wish you and yours a
blessed and joyful holiday.

Garden Club The South Salem Garden
Club will have our final meeting
for this year on Monday, Dec.
17, 1 p.m., at the Center.
Let’s be festive. Wear your
Christmas sweaters and bells. We
will have a white elephant bingo.
That translates to bring “stuff” you no longer
want, all wrapped pretty (or not). Bingo winners
can then choose a gift. The more gifts and bin-
gos, the more fun, so bring as much as you can.
Treats would be nice, too.
We may not be having more Garden Club
activities if we do not get more members, more
ideas for monthly programs, and whatever it
takes to keep the Club going. This has been a
long and fun volunteer project for me and I want
to share the fun.
“Let us be grateful for people who make us
happy. They are the charming gardeners who
make our souls blossom.” Marcel Proust Barbara Castle (503-375-7723)
Gift Shop News
The Gift Shop is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mon-
day through Friday. We have many great items
for sale. Good deals and very reasonable prices.
The Christmas cards have been set out and
priced at .50 cents for 4 cards.
The Gift Shop needs donations in order to
have a variety of items. Christmas is so close and
we need inventory to keep up with the demand.
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving, and
have a wonderful Christmas.
Monthly Birthday Cake Celebration Dates
We will celebrate members
birthdays at the monthly
membership meetings, on the
second Wednesday
of each month.
If your birthday falls in
December please join us at the
Dec. 12 Membership Meeting
and Birthday Reception following the meeting.
Monday Afternoon Crafters On October 8, members of our crafter’s group and a
chauffer toured the Chemawa Indian School.
We were invited since our group made 360 hats and
matching scarves for Christmas gifts for the students. We
were ushered around the school by students to many of the
buildings. The education building was similar to other
school facilities with the colorful addition of beautiful mu-
rals painted by students depicting tribes from all over the
US. The covered walkways led to the “athletic pit” that
contained a basketball court and various paraphernalia for
skateboard enthusiasts. They also have an enclosed gym
and olympic-sized swimming pool along with fitness, rec-
reation, and student centers.
The dormitory building, built in 2010 is impressive.
The students are required to maintain cleanliness of their
own rooms and bathrooms. Outside custodial help does not
have daily responsibilities in the dorms. That was impres-
sive to us.
Our tour guides were lovely, polite girls. One of our
group uses a cane. Whenever we went up or down stairs,
our guide held out her hand to help. She was also very de-
liberate in answering our questions. All of the students in
the school are at least 1/4 Indian.
We returned to SSS with comments of “impressive,”
“wonderful,” “very polite students,” “beautiful.” It was a
great morning. Arlene Williams

Board Meeting Monday, December 10, 10 a.m. Meeting is open to
any interested member. Agenda is posted on Tues-
day morning on the hallway bulletin board. Membership Meeting The next membership meeting is December 12, 1

Member’s Potluck Recessed till Spring due to lack of
attendance. Attendance at the last Friday of the
month Member potlucks has dropped
off significantly. We need to know if
the membership wishes to continue this event that has
been a part of our Center since our beginning 31 years
ago. When we resume the event in Spring, we need
one to three people to volunteer to be in charge of
planning games and entertainment for the dinner, plus
help with setup and cleanup. Jean Peterson has been
doing this alone for a long time but due to some
health issues, she would like to step down and turn it
over to other members. Call for info: 503-588-0748.
Senior Center Activities
Battlecreek Elementary Christmas
Concert Coming to Center
Battlecreek Elementary School’s Choir will hold their
annual Christmas Concert at the South Salem Senior
Center on December 12, at 1:30 p.m.
Under the direction of teacher Gloria Burtis, the choir
has been making this visit every Christmas, and again at
the end of the school year, to entertain their parents and
our members.
Please join us for some great Christmas music!
‘Round the Center by Donna Avina Halloween, like most special events, was a fun happening at your
South Salem Senior Center. Costumes, sweet treats, and candy
were abundant. Next up is Christmas. Decorations going up the
day after Thanksgiving.
The Thursday afternoon Pinochle group hosted a
surprise birthday party for their fellow card player
Grace McCoy, who was celebrating her 99th
year. The two large cakes, one German Chocolate
and the other Lemon, were served with ice cream,
and a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday was
sung. Frank Prince, also one of the card players,
made both the cakes which were absolutely deli-
cious. For being 99, Grace is very spry and has a
beautiful smile.
Let’s Take a Walk! Do you like to walk? Would you like to
walk with others? On Tuesdays and Thursdays at SSS, Chair
Yoga meets from 8:30 to 9:30. Some of the Yoga participants
like to walk afterwards. If you would like to join the group, meet
at SSS at 9:30 and walk about 2 miles ending back at SSS. If it’s
raining, the group won’t walk. So far, the weather has been per-
fect for walking. You don’t have to participate in the yoga class,
but you are certainly welcome to!
