Dear Parents and Friends,
Are we there yet? Well not quite as there is still a lot of work with finalising this year’s school year and then preparing for 2011. Not only have we been able to showcase this year’s performances with our Night with the Stars, we are now rehearsing for Celebration Night. This is our school’s annual event where we recognise outstanding achievements from our students. It is a time for everyone to share the successes we have had in 2010. Two members of our school community have received Western Sydney Regional Awards for their outstanding commitment towards education and school life. Mr Brent (teacher) and Angus McDonald (student leader) will receive their awards on 1 st December. Miss Penhall has received a scholarship to visit China on a study tour in January. This is in recognition of her efforts with developing a Chinese language program at our school. Alistair Wood in Year 5 was awarded 2 nd place in a national cartooning competition and will be receiving his award in Canberra on the 8 th December. Well done. We know that we have talent in our school and it is wonderful to know that others recognise it as well. This is also the time of year when questions are asked about classes for the next school year. As we are a growing school our numbers change on a daily basis. At this stage it would be helpful if you know of anyone who wishes to enrol, to do so now. Schools are an entry point into greater society and how your child interacts with their peers and other adults is an indication of their social development. While some appear to be overly confident there are others that do not have the resilience to cope with perceived rejections. The teachers at our school are very diligent about following up issues and actually encouraging positive behaviour amongst their students. It is always easy for some to assume that problems exist or are not being attended to when that is not the case. When an issue has been raised it is investigated thoroughly. Please approach your child’s class teacher with your queries in the first instance. I truly enjoyed the hiphop happening at 4/5L’s assembly yesterday. I can see a new dance group emerging in 2011… Signing off now, Cathy Stokes Relieving Principal

WHOOPING COUGH We have been advised that one of our students has Whooping Cough, even though this student has been immunised. Can you just be watchful of your child and if you have any concerns please take them to your doctor. Whooping cough starts with a runny nose, followed by a persistent cough that comes in bouts. Bouts maybe followed by vomiting and a whooping sound as the child gasps for air.
FROM THE TEACHERS
Kindy Capers Potato People! This term Kindergarten are doing an author study on Pamela Allen, and this week we are reading a story called ‘Potato People’. While we study this book, we want to make ‘potato people’ just like Pamela Allen did in the story. With this in mind, can I request that your child brings in 1 potato to use for this activity please. Thank you, Mrs Kassis
Stage 3 updates
HILL END CAMP The Stage 3 Hill End Camp is on this Monday 22 nd November. All students need to be at school by 7.00am as we are departing at 7.30am. Information sheets went home at the beginning of last week explaining requirements for the camp. We will return to school at 6.30pm on Tuesday 23 rd November. Please have any medications labelled and give to the class teacher on Monday morning. We are all looking forward to this fun educational camp. The teachers attending are Mrs Burns, Miss Dennis, Mrs Cauchi, Mrs Walker and Mr Clark.
CHEER LEADERS Well done to the Cheer Leaders at last week’s Night of The Stars. You were a great bunch of kids to work with and we all had a lot of fun performing the routine. The costumes looked fabulous and a big thank you goes to Mrs Meek and Mrs Meyer for their fabulous sewing. Also, thank you to Mrs Pilarski for lending us the pompoms, they looked great.
YEAR 6 FAREWELL The Year 6 Farewell will be on Monday 6 th December 2010 at the Castle Hill R.S.L. There will be a cost of $32.50 per person. Invitations and an information page have gone out this week. Graduation Bears are also available at a cost of $10.00 for the Year 6 children. The school pays the balance of the bears and attach a lovely school badge to it too!
YR 6 FUN DAY The Year 6 Fun Day is coming up on Wednesday 1 st December (first Wednesday of Week 8). There will be a cost of $5.00 for each child K5. The Year 6 children will run the fun activities on the day. The money raised will fund the gift to the school from Year 6. Last year’s Year 6 gave the school the wonderful new house and school banners. Yes, these are busy times, but just hang in there everyone!
With thanks, Kylie Walker Year 6 Teacher
Celebration Night 2010 Something else to add to your busy December diary! Our Celebration Night will be held this year on December 8 th in the Rouse Hill High School Hall. Proceedings start at 6.30 sharp. Thanking you in advance for ensuring your child attends.
Kind Regards David Brent
P & C PRESIDENT’S REPORT
A big thank you to Emma and her volunteers for organizing the sausage sizzle for the Bush Band the other night. This was a great night enjoyed by many of the Ironbark Ridge families.
Each year the Kindy parents supply morning tea for the incoming Kindy parents on the last orientation day. It was disappointing to hear of the lack of Kindy parents in attendance last week. A special HUGE thank you to Jenny Colosimo and Rachel Colosimo for flying the flag on behalf of the Kindy 2010 parents and to the 2 Kindy mums who supplied morning tea for the incoming 2011 Kindy parents. Hopefully next year the morning tea will get a bit more support.
At last night’s meeting, the P&C ratified that "That the NSW Minister for Education changes DET's policy to allow secular ethics classes to operate as a complement to scripture/SRE classes in NSW primary schools." I have received a number of emails regarding this issue. I would just like to clarify for all concerned that this does not mean that Ironbark Ridge will be introducing Ethics nor does it mean that your child has to attend Ethics classes.
Just a quick reminder that the next P&C Meeting is in 2011. I will advertise the date in the newsletter after Christmas.
Over the holidays I would like you to consider joining the P&C in 2011 and possibly taking on a position on the committee. One of the positions we will be looking for is a volunteer for (or 23 people to join together) fundraising coordinator. This is a very rewarding position that enables the P&C to purchase many exciting items for the students at the school. Of course there are many positions that need to be filled but this seems to be the position where we have the most difficulty.
Hopefully I will get to see you all at the Social Night on 27 November …..

Fundraising News We would like to thank IGA at the Beaumont Hills Shopping Centre. We have just received a cheque from them for $290.36 from everyone shopping at IGA and dropping their dockets off into the box. A special thank you to the proprietor and staff from IGA Beaumont Hills for supporting our school.

TOYS ‘N TUCKER – Is Christmas only for those who can afford it?
We have contributed to this event for a number of years and have always taken pride with the support that our learning community has given. Once again it is time to think of others and to really understand that the spirit of Christmas is about helping others, not just ourselves. If you are able to donate anything please do so by Monday 9 th December. All donations are to be sent to the front office. Thank you.
Ironbark Ridge brings Christmas hope to families in need Ironbark Ridge Public School is set to bring hope to families in need this Christmas with bags of food and toys being collected from the school community as part of ANGLICARE’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker appeal.
Every year ANGLICARE’s Emergency Relief program provides financial and food assistance to thousands of marginalised and socially excluded families and individuals who are finding it difficult to make ends meet.
This year ANGLICARE is attempting to individually pack and deliver Christmas hampers and presents to almost 5,000 families in Sydney and the Illawarra.
“For the thousands of people we help Christmas is often a time of stress and worry. Often struggling to make ends meet, nice meals for the family or Christmas presents are luxuries that are simply out of reach for many,” says ANGLICARE CEO Peter Kell.
Highlighting that ANGLICARE hampers may be the only gifts some families receive Mr Kell says the donations collected by Ironbark Ridge will go a long way in giving hope to a family who may be struggling this Christmas.
“By participating in our Toys ‘n’ Tucker Christmas campaign, people can help ease the burden of poverty and show disadvantaged families that someone really does care.”
Toys ‘n’ Tucker is one component of ANGLICARE’s Christmas campaign. Anyone in the community wishing to financially support ANGLICARE’s Christmas Appeal can call 13 26 22.
