2018-2019 Board Members: L to R Cindy Abrams, Nancy Turney, Jean Giacomelli, Alice Smith, Elke Miyahara,Tim Spinn, Crystal Dudley, Mary Jamora,Sharon Bishop, An Burgess, and Raza Read. Leanne Compean, at the podium, introduced the new Board.

WOW! We learned how to do amazing quilting patterns using a Walking Foot and without marking the quilt, in last month’s workshop. “Walking Foot Wow”, with Mel Beach, was a wonder. New ways to easily quilt our Loving Hands quilts with exciting and unique quilt patterns were bonuses. It was our guild’s first full workshop in a while with a waiting list, although we’ve come very close due to our great program and workshop team.

This month we have wonderful quilting books for sale from our very extensive guild library. There will be some collector items, so bring your cash and be ready to find a ‘treasure’! In addition, we’ll have our first ever finger food potluck. (Can’t wait to see what wonderful goodies everyone brings.) 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Status

Many of you are aware that our guild was set up originally in 1984 as a 501(c)(7) nonprofit Social Organization, and that this does not allow members’ donations to the guild to be tax deductible. In 1987 the guild became Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, but the paperwork to change our tax-exempt status to match our Incorporation was apparently not filed. After we investigated what happened, we then completed and sent in the paperwork to become a 501(c)(3), with oversight of Jacquelin Remery, Esq. attorney, who donated her time. This will mean, for example, that any donations from our members or others should then be tax deductible. If all goes well, we should get confirmation back from the IRS within 180 days. A big thanks to Kathy Fogel and Jacquelin Remery (who was recommended by Bonnie Marshal-Creel), for their contributions toward getting this done. Positive Energy

Thank you for two wonderful years serving as your president. It has been an honor and privilege to work with an excellent Board, and to get to know everyone in the Guild better. In working with our guild members in various activities it has always impressed me how kind, appreciative, creative, and hardworking everyone is. We’ve had a lot of positive energy with our new location, great speakers, full workshops, incredible raffle baskets, amazing opportunity quilt, aesthetically stunning quilt show, and the list goes on. Finally, congratulations to our newly elected Board starting in July. Please join me in wishing them well and giving our full support! Happy Quilting, Colleen Shier, President

Loving Hands At the May guild meeting, nine quilt tops were turned in, seven of them for our camper quilt project. These tops were made by Leah Bessey, Katsy Chappell, Flo Cohen, Cathy Euler and Brandi Nalley. Also turned were 16 finished quilts, including seven camper quilts finished by Pat Golditch, Cindy Abrams & An Burgess, Cindy Abrams & Sharon Bishop, Lisa Burroughs, Evette & Lou Gallo and Alice Turner. The other quilts were completed by Crystal Dudley, Cathy Euler and Pat Golditch, Regarding the camper quilt project, as of mid-May we had 14 quilts completed and another 20 on their way to completion. Laurie Landaker, president of the foundation that runs the camp for kids of military personnel will be at our June meeting to collect the quilts we are donating. We’ve also invited our press friend, Joyce Rudolph of the Glendale News-Press, to cover the donation. Thank you to everyone who participated in the raffle to benefit Loving Hands at the May guild meeting. A total of $651 was raised with which we’ll buy batting for our charity quilts. And a special thank you Doralee Dohnel who donated two fabulous quilt tops to the raffle which really drove ticket sales. Remember that Loving Hands now meets the third Friday of the month. So in June, the regular work session will be on Friday, June 15th at the WAC from 10 am – 3 pm. We hope to see you on the 15th!

Challenge Yourself Mel Beach presented her trunk show of quilts from various challenges, which she found raised her creativity to new levels and inspired her to create one-of-a-kind quilts. Her inspirational presentation included visual quotes that carried her message in unique ways.

You have one last chance to participate in this year’s challenge: The Under the Big Top Challenge Quilt. The size is 16” by 20” either vertical or horizontal. You must use as much of the polka dot fabric and rick rack to be able to see it clearly on the quilt. Add your own fabric, draw up your own design and meet the challenge of letting viewers choose which quilts they like the best. Ribbons will be awarded at the October Luncheon. See Elke Miyahara at the June Meeting.

Sixty-three members attended the May meeting. Two members from out of state joined us: Joni Kellam (Denton, Texas) and Gail McCartney from the St. Louis area, Missouri. So glad you were able to attend. We want to introduce a new member: Elaine Layton – we are delighted that you joined GQG, Elaine. There were eight guests that we hope will also soon be members: Mercy Garcia, Maria Madariago, Maria Vasquez, Tsuyo Emi, Stephen Landreth, Rosalie Manuel, Mary Lighthart, and Francine Loomis. Membership renewal forms are available online and at the Membership desk. An addition to the form is a place for you to indicate if you would like to get the membership roster on the website or pick up a copy at the meeting or have it mailed. Thirty-six members renewed their membership at the meeting. Below are the ideas six suggested as to future programs and/or ideas for Guild activities:

• Paper piecing easy ways • Jerry Granata – uses many unusual

fabrics • Fewer workshops, more “come and sew”

on Saturday • More in-house programs • Foundation paper piecing class • Trunk shows of guild members. Guild

member programs like “my favorite tool.” UFO challenges, Blocks of the month, Block exchanges, All sew Days.

We invite all of you to make suggestions. What you suggest enriches the guild and our activities. Do send any ideas to us. They are so helpful. Pat Golditch and Karen Millman, Membership Co-Chairs

Prizes, Prizes for our Generous Members Two quilt tops donated by Doralee Dohnel were won by Nancy Turney (with the Log Cabin top on the left) and Nancy Wagner (with the Mariner’s Compass top on the right). Seven baskets, ranging from large to small were won by four other members. Roger Ung, our youngest member, and Kate Ung, his mother, won the basket with the toy. A lucky Mary Jamora (far right below) won two baskets. Bonnie Creel-Marshall (middle) also won two baskets and Alice Turner (on the left) also won a basket. When asked what was Nancy Turney’s winning strategy for the quilt top, she stated, “ I bought 30 tickets and put 29 in the bag for the one I wanted to win.” Mary Jamora, a double winner, also shared her game plan, “I just bought as many tickets as I had money in my purse.” Kate Ung stated that Roger really liked to win rather than get the prize. He liked wearing the tickets as a necklace just like Tina. Due to excitement generated by raffle fever, we seem to have one winner unaccounted for. We are sorry and would love it, if you were the unaccounted for winner, to please let Tina, Elke or Cindy A. know so that you can be celebrated in our next newsletter. Loving Hands was the biggest winner of the evening. Thank you to all who participated, cheered and showed their support for our GQG charity division.
