Newsletter #4 / 5 March 2020 Social Media Safety Cyberbullying and harassment via digital platforms are very distressing. They can be classified as criminal offences too. Following Sarah Hoffman’s recent Parent Empowerment Talk, we thought it appropriate to remind our readers of the following important tips: Encourage your teenager to take the following three steps immediately if s/he is the victim of cyberbullying: 1. REPORT IT to a trusted adult 2. SCREENSHOT IT and preserve the evidence 3. BLOCK the bully Make the most of your privacy settings – keep your profiles closed, allowing access only to chosen friends and family. Make sure that your WhatsApp profile photo is not visible to everyone. Control who can contact you - social media apps allow you to block users and change settings so that you can control who can contact you. Keep personal information personal – Think before you post! Never be tempted to publish information or photos that might cause you embarrassment at a later stage. If you don’t want something broadcast, don’t post it! Nudes are never a good idea – need we say more? Don’t take them, share them or ask for them. Know who your friends are it is unwise to make friends with complete strangers on social media sites as you can never be sure what their motives are. Always beware of posting your location - turn off your location settings on your phone and on your social media apps. These location settings can show your exact location to within a few metres. Everything that gets on the web, stays on the web - once you post something, consider it permanently published, even if you delete it. Disassociate yourself from social media content, WhatsApp chats or group members that post inappropriate content – leave the WhatsApp group or voice an objection regarding inappropriate content. Failure to do so makes you party to the content from a legal perspective. Parents – install parental control software and activate screen time parental controls to prevent access to inappropriate content or excessive time spent on cell phones. Try Apple’s Screen Time app or Google FamilyLink. Interested in finding out more? Visit The Digital Law Company’s website www.thedigitallawco.com.

Social Media Safety Cyberbullying and harassment via digital platforms are very distressing. They can be classified as criminal offences too. Following Sarah Hoffman’s recent Parent Empowerment Talk, we thought it appropriate to remind our readers of the following important tips:

Encourage your teenager to take the following three steps immediately if s/he is the victim of cyberbullying:

1. REPORT IT to a trusted adult

2. SCREENSHOT IT and preserve the

evidence

3. BLOCK the bully

Make the most of your privacy settings – keep your profiles closed, allowing access only to chosen friends and family.

1. Know who your friends are – it is unwise to make friends with complete strangers on social media sites as you can never be sure what their motives are.

2. 3. Always beware of posting your location

- turn off your location settings on your phone and on your social media apps. These location settings can show your exact location to within a few metres.

6. 7. Everything that gets on the web, stays on

the web - once you post something, consider it permanently published, even if you delete it.
