Newsletter 30 th March 2011Welcome to this weeks Newsletter.
Dont forget this Sunday is Mothers Day.
LINC Supports International Transgender Day Of Visibility 2011 tomorrow
31 st March
Census 2011Its coming up on 10th April as you know, and offers a very important opportunity
to gather information on same-sex couples sharing the same household, and inparticular on same-sex headed families with children sharing the same household.
LGB couples and families are a large but historically hidden population group and
the census helps to identify us.
Strong visibility of couples and families will be critically important in helping to
promote further change for LGB people.
GLEN has done up a note on the Census, outlining the opportunity in the Census
for a same-sex couples to record their relationship and to note the relationship
with children in the household.
The GLEN note is available at

Please see communication below received in LINC from a Community Member:
I just wanted to let you know that I have communicated with the CSO regardingthe marital status question. Obviously it is a big disappointment not to be giventhe option of being counted as Civilly Partnered since me and my partner havehad a Civil Partnership ceremony in Belfast 3 years ago and have legally beenrecognised here since January. I have spoken to someone in the Census office andhave been told to tick the 'Married' box. Perhaps this would be useful information
to share with others in a similar position in case anyone mistakenly marksthemselves as single!?Also for anyone (as I am intending to do) wishes to formally state theirdisappointment they can do so in writing to:Gerry Walker

17/3/2011-what a day! Having been on the steering committee of LINC fora number of months, I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to spendPaddys day in the white house of Ireland! Myself and Susan from theSteering Committee represented LINC at a reception to celebrate St.Patricks day with President McAleese and her husband. The theme of thisreception was volunteering- so volunteers from all around the country andfrom various groups were in attendance. Having received my invitation inthe post, I learnt that I could bring a guest. I chose to bring my friendSharon, who hails from Co. Wexford, as one of my many friends who havebeen extremely supportive during the coming out stage of my life andbeyond. On the day, she arrived at my house extremely excited and
brought Shamrock for us to wear. I didnt get remotely excited until wearrived and saw my name on the guest list! Once in ras an Uachtarin, wejoined the queue to meet the president and get our photo taken. Then wehad the best of finger food to choose from ranging from smoked salmon tomini quiches to mini scones! There was also wine and mini pints ofGuinness on offer. We spent an hour mingling in a room, where the wallswere aligned with portraits of all the former presidents of Ireland. Afterthis we were invited to go to another room for some Irish entertainmentout through the beautiful gardens. The poet Pl Muir gave an
introduction, during which he spoke of shamelessly going around askingpeople what they were doing for Paddys day, just so when they asked himhe could say he was going to ras an Uachtarin, which we were all guiltyof, Mary McAleese made a motivating and inspirational speech. Thisconsisted of believing Ireland was on the road to a more inclusive societyfor everybody through the work of volunteers and the organisations theywork with. Following this, the Kilfenora Cil band and the Crosserlough SetDancers provided craic agus ceol galore which brought our day living thehigh life to a close! It was truly unforgettable and the President was so
nice and welcoming to everyone regardless of who they were, where theywere from or what background they possessed-we all arrived as uniqueindividuals and left feeling recognised and valued for this and with a newappreciation of the solidarity that comes from being Irish and workingtowards a more equal society.
