There are some words that have become so commonly used as slang forstupid or weird that many people who use them probably dont thinkabout the meaning of the words or realize that they contribute to an unwel-coming environment. Do you know which words were talking about? If yousaid retarded and gay, youre right. The truth is, even when no offense wasintended, use of these words in a negative way hurts and disrespects those

with an intellectual disability and those who identify themselves as gay. It alsomakes people who respect and care about them upset and uncomfortable. Iwas only joking or I didnt mean gay people or I didnt say it to offend anyone are not accept-able excuses. Not convinced? Dr. Paula Rodriguez Rust, an educational consultant on bullying pre-vention and diversity awareness, suggests, Imagine if you came to school one day and instead ofthats so gay, everyone was using the phrase thats so (your name). How would you feel at theend of the day, after hearing your name used as a put-down all day long? Then imagine that youasked someone why they were using your name as an insult and they said, Oh, its okay; Im nottalking about you. Would that excuse satisfy you? Or would it make you feel more hurt or annoyedbecause it shows that they dont understand or care how it makes you feel?Promote dignity and respect for all people by helping to eliminate the derogatory use of these

words from everyday speech. If you hear someone use these, or similar phrases, raising theirawareness regarding the negative impact of their words can be as simple as saying, Hey, I wouldappreciate it if you didnt use that word around me anymore. When you use retarded (or gay)as a synonym for stupid or weird, you are saying that all people with intellectual disabilities (orwho are gay) are stupid, and thats definitely not true. Sources: www.r-word.org,www.thinkb4youspeak.org, and How to Explain Why Thats So Gay Is Not Cool to Say by Dr.Paula Rodriguez Rust, published in The Legal Eagle, A Newspaper About the Law for Young People,Volume 15, Number 2 2011 New Jersey State Bar Foundation.

Job Shadowing is a great time to explore the world of work.

Job Shadowing gives students an opportunity to see that the skills they learn in school are

related to the skills they will need in the workplace. Job Shadowing is considered a short-

term experience to introduce a student to a particular job by a one-on-one pairing of a stu-

dent with an employee in a work environment. The student shadows the worker up to one

day to better understand the requirements of a particular career. All students are encour-

aged to participate in this activity.

    Important Information about Job Shadowing:

Students and their parents/guardians will make arrangements for the student to shadow aparent/guardian, friend, relative or another person in a career of interest at the work site toinclude transportation.

Students are eligible to have ONE day per school year for this activity.

Job Shadowing can be completed in a couple of hours, an entire day, weekends and/or

    holidays.

Students provide their own lunch during shadowing, if applicable.

Students should demonstrate punctuality, honesty, good grooming habits, appropriatedress and willingness to learn.

Students serve as an observer, not a worker.

Students are not permitted to shadow teachers at Irmo Middle school.

Any school work missed as a result of being absent for shadowing is the responsibility of

    the student.

If interested, please have your student contact Allison Redick, Career Specialist to pick up a

packet or go to our IMS Website under the Guidance Department/Career Specialist to print

a packet. Also, if you need assistance for a particular career to job shadow please contact

Allison Redick @ 476-3668 or email: [email protected].
