Christmas Craft Fayre Saturday 3rd December 10am to 1pm Responses to the plans for the Christmas Craft Fayre have been fantastic and we will

have lots of stalls with brilliant gift ideas. Not only will you be able to enjoy the coffee

and cake (or mince pie), but you'll also be able to buy unique Christmas presents for

your family and friends. There'll be a huge array, including:

Cards, wooden gifts, funky scarfs, jewellery, reproduction prints, alphabet cushions,

handmade bags, pin boards, potted hyacinths, candles, Christmas cup-cakes, all sorts of

smellies, and loads of personalised gifts.

That's only what we've been told about so far, so there'll be lots of other stuff too!

The Old School Green

Our aim is to provide a sign for the green area north of the Church, which was

originally Westbury Leigh Primary School playing field. We feel it is

important to recognise the history of this part of the village, and would like to

include the old school in the design of the sign.

What we need are some good pictures or illustrations of the old school

building, on which to base the design. So if you have anything suitable, or for

that matter, any other ideas, please let us know, or better still come along to the

next meeting to share what you may have.

Have you noticed the new sign?

Since part of the Holy Saviour Church was converted into a community hall

more than ten years ago, the Hall has been an increasingly popular venue for

activities of all kinds – weddings, parties, keep-fit classes and many others.

Some recent hirers are coming from Bradford-on-Avon, Trowbridge and

Frome. Local people know, of course, that the hall is inside the church, but

hirers coming from further afield have been confused, looking for a separate

hall along Westbury Leigh.

The Hall Management Committee asked Wiltshire Council for advice, and the

Council offered to put up a sign, at a very modest cost. The sign was erected

on 9th August and now no-one has any excuse for not finding the Hall!

Litter pick

Apologies to those of you who turned up for the litter pick on 7th August.

It had to be cancelled because of unforeseen circumstance – it wasn’t the

awful weather! We hope to organise another one soon, as the litter doesn’t

go away by itself.

Parking The Association has been made aware that a number of residents have

received parking tickets for exceeding the 23-hour limit in the car park. As

the enforcement of the limit is contrary to the purpose of the car park (ie

for residents’ parking) we have taken the matter up with Wiltshire

Council. We have also taken the opportunity to remind them again that the

parking restrictions as a whole in Westbury Leigh need review.

Did You Know? That Westbury Leigh was once a hive of industry? In the 1950s the Boulton

glove factory (Becks Mill) employed about 500 people (including outworkers)

and the tannery in Black Horse Lane (now gone) employed another 100.

That in the 1830s there were 2 maltsters in Westbury Leigh? One, Stephen

Browne, was at 18 Westbury Leigh (which then included 16 as

workshop/stables). The other was called James Knight and the Knight family

remained in the business until 1925, owning The Hollies, The Maltings and

Courtleigh House.

That there were several other industries competing for workers? In the second

half of the 19th century there were brick and tile works in Eden Vale and Penleigh

and an iron works close to the station.

Brain Teasers

1) You can take away the whole and still have some left. You can take

away some and still have the whole left. What is it?

2) Alex bought a bag of apples on Saturday, and he ate a third of

them. On Sunday he ate half of the remaining apples. He ate one

more on Monday and one more on Tuesday, then ate half of the

remaining apples on Wednesday. On Thursday he looked in the bag

and saw that there was just one apple left. How many apples did the

bag have to begin with?
