THE BIG DRAW In the week beginning 12th October, we celebrated The Big Draw – the National Campaign for Drawing. This year’s theme was ‘Every Drawing Tells a Story’, and our pupils have been taking part in drawing activities in tutor groups and across the curriculum. Visiting artist Rory Doona led a drawing workshop for some Year 8 pupils and also led talks to GCSE Art pupils about working in the creative industries – a valuable experience for all.

We also found some talent amongst our staff – sixteen teachers entered the drawing competition and students have been busy guessing the artist behind each picture… answers revealed before half term!

Well done and thank you to all those who helped to celebrate The Big Draw.

PUPPET WORKSHOP On Monday 12th October the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama came to St Bede’s and led a puppet workshop with Year 8 pupils. The pupils enjoyed a demonstration of their fantastic giant puppet in Theatre Benedictus and got the chance to create their own puppets and perform with them! A brilliant morning, fun while learning!

NEW STATE OF THE ART SCIENCE LAB AT ST. BEDE’S

We are delighted to announce that our state of the art chemistry lab is completely finished, thanks to funding from parents through Gift Aid and governors. Working in the laboratory will hopefully inspire even more students to go on to study chemistry and physics at A-Level and beyond. Ms Mason, Head of Science said “It is the additional fume cupboards which really mark out this lab. These mean we now have a university-standard facility which enables students to participate in a range of more advanced and exciting practical experiments. Previously students would have been taught a number of concepts by watching a demonstration by the teacher or on video. “Our A-Level groups have in the past also had to travel to Bristol University to carry out practical activities associated with their study and although we are immensely grateful to the university staff for their support over the years, it is now wonderful to be able to have these excellent facilities here at St. Bede’s. “We have a very strong take-up for chemistry A-Level; the lab is a real boost to our sixth form resources. I am sure also that the younger pupils will be delighted to be using these facilities.”

SPANISH THEATRE SCHOOL

We were delighted last week to hear that year 8 pupil Megan Scarpati recently

performed the role of Pinocchio in front of an audience of 300, entirely in Spanish!

Megan, who is fluent in the language, attends a Spanish Theatre School in Muller Road,

Bristol. Megan thoroughly enjoyed the experience and is now looking

forward to auditioning for their forthcoming production of Frozen, again, in Spanish!

RUGBY UPDATE

Wednesday 14th October saw the first foray into full contact competitive Rugby for some of our year 7s as they contested a festival held at St Bede’s. St Bede’s was happy to put out two strong teams, both with a healthy number of substitutes. Our two sides competed strongly and showed up well against varied opposition. This festival was a precursor to a future event hosted by Oasis Academy Brightstowe that will decide who progresses in the competition. With dress rehearsals finished, we are encouraged by our boys chances. Thursday would see more Rugby at St Bede’s in the form of a year 11 match versus Redland Green School. Unfortunately our boys weren’t quite able to get the win in a game that saw our attritional style surpassed by Redland Green’s exciting backline, leading them to a ten-point victory. Whilst the Year 11 players were slogging it out on the 1st XV field, we were lucky enough to have seventy-two excited Year 6s contesting a Tag tournament on our 3G pitches. The tournament, set up to offer our Catholic Primary feeder schools the opportunity to come and experience our fantastic facilities first hand, before applications for year 7 close at the end of the month, was a terrific success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The competition follows a number of visits by our Head of Rugby, Mr Luke to those feeder schools, giving the prospective St Bede’s boys and girls a taste of rugby to whet their appetite prior to arrival at the College. St Bonaventure’s Catholic Primary were crowned eventual winners against a very good St. Francis side and were handed their trophy by former St Bede’s pupil and now Bristol Rugby player, Joe Joyce.

A'LEVEL ART TRIP TO ST. IVES - 8th-11th October

The College Art Department had the opportunity recently to take the

current A-Level students to St. Ives in Cornwall for a weekend of art

activity and enrichment. The students visited the Barbara Hepworth

Museum, several independent art galleries as well as the famous Eden

Project. In all environments, the students were encouraged to draw, paint

and use their photography skills in a creative and exciting way. They also

had the opportunity to work with a local artist who introduced them to

why St. Ives is important amongst Artists worldwide. He gave the stu-

dents a snapshot of a professional artist using his skills, as well as teaching

them skills and new ways of working. It was a valuable experience for the

students and the work that they have produced has certainly enriched

their own portfolios.

FIRST WORLD WAR BATTLEFIELDS TRIP TO YPRES AND THE

SOMME

At 5.00am on Thursday 8th October, 39 excited Year 9 pupils

and 4 staff set off on their tour of the First World War

Battlefield sites. We visited the fascinating Memorial

Museum of Passchendaele, where pupils investigated the

three battles of Ypres and explored replica bunker and

trench systems; the moving ceremonies at the Menin Gate;

the Somme area and Thiepval, where we held our own

ceremony and laid a wreath in memory of those who

sacrificed their lives in the First World War. Our First World

War experience was tied together by our final visit to the In

Flanders Field Museum.

BATTLEFIELDS TRIP 2016

Letters are now available to Year 8 for next year's Battlefield

Trip. If you have not received a letter from your tutor,

please see Mrs Lewis. Deposits need to be returned to Mrs

Gates by Friday, 6th November 2015.

NATIONAL POETRY DAY

In the last issue of the newsletter we had just celebrated National Poetry Day. The theme this year was

‘Light.’ Pupils were encouraged to create their own poetry on this theme.

Congratulations to Isabelle Faria and Catlin Baber who were our winners.

THE FOREST FIRE—Isabelle Faria, Year 9

Blazing flames engulf.

Consuming, spreading, growing,

Furious, eating.

Like a pack of hungry wolves

Nothing escapes them, no one.

THE LONE LIGHT—Caitlin Baber, Year 10

Swallowed in the darkness Its silvery light shines bright

Above it sits alone Cold, distant, it guides us home The Lone light glows in the night

NEW LOGO FOR PASTEUR HOUSE!

Pasteur House Council have been running a competition to design a new logo. We

wanted something that encompassed the ethos of the house as well as represent

Pasteur himself - Kylle Deligero, Year 10 came up with the perfect design. It is

complemented by the house motto: #anythingispossible. We are very proud of our

new logo. Well done Kylle! Eoin Condron and Charlotte Norris Pasteur House

CAFOD Young Volunteers day

On Tuesday this week year 10 St Bede's pupils along with other year 10’s from schools across the Diocese

came to St. Bede's to take part in the CAFOD young volunteers programme. The theme of the day was

campaigning. Pupils discovered the different campaigns CAFOD run around the world and how we can start

campaigning and teaching other pupils about the issues faced in our country and beyond. The focus of the

day was creativity and teamwork and we were challenged to find creative ways to present a specific CAFOD

value to a target audience. Overall it was a fun and exciting day which allowed pupils from all schools to work

together and learn about CAFOD. Dominic Britton, year 10.

SWEENEY TODD Last night 50 pupils from years 10-13 along with 10 staff watched the production of 'Sweeney Todd' at the Bristol Hippodrome. This was an amazing opportunity to see Welsh National Opera; world-class opera com-pany perform Sondheim's dark comedy; a musical set in the 1970s telling the story of Sweeney, a man seek-ing revenge. Those who enter his shop get more than a close shave. The unlucky ones end up in Mrs Lovett’s rather unsavoury pies! It was an unforgettable performance and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
