Now, One or More members can propose new men for membership. As part of that change, the Board had started a New Member Campaign whereby the first sponsor of a new member will be entitled to a complimentary lunch at the luncheon when the new member is introduced to the members present at the lun-cheon. On Jeopardy recently, the final question was “How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns ?” For the correct answer, ask Ed Benz who during his military career was stationed at Fort Myer, Arlington, Virginia, and also see his Profile in this issue of the Newsletter. ** In closing, remember the three Rs: Respect for self, Respect for others, and Responsibility for all your actions. The SMCGP requires your attendance and support of our programs and activities. I look

forward to seeing you at our only meeting in January on Tuesday Jan.27, 2015.

Profile of the Month: Ed Benz

2015 Entertainment Books

$35.00

Ed Benz was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (His father was married to Helen Dunbar who was the daughter of a homesteading farmer; she was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse who later became a registered nurse.) The family moved to Detroit where the senior Mr. Benz managed a Western Auto store and the couple raised and educated their five children in the then thriving St. Benedict parish.

The greater world opened to Ed in 1951 when he attended the University of Detroit, enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences and in the Army ROTC program. His college days were interrupted by a two-year stint in the U.S. Army. Stationed in Colora-do, he received 16 weeks of basic infantry training in heavy weapons. He later was assigned to the Honor Guard Unit at Fort Myer in Arlington, Va., where he performed guard duty, including guarding the house of the Army Chief of Staff. He once came to atten-tion in dress blues for a visit by Queen Elizabeth II. Following his release from the Army in October 1958, he spent a year in New York in Manhattan’s West Village .Later he worked on the USNS Upshur, a troop ship sailing from Brooklyn, N.Y., to Bremer-haven, Germany, before resuming his education at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Tex.

After graduation he spent time on the S.S. South American, a Great Lakes cruise ship, where he was an assistant bartender. Ed overcame his nerves and dated a ship’s officer, Mary Fran Weber, RN, who later on accepted his proposal of marriage while near the top of Mt. Royal in Canada. When Ed and Fran were married, Ed was teaching at Detroit’s Holy Re-deemer School. They managed a honeymoon ski trip to Mt. Tremblant in Quebec, Canada. (They returned on their 50th wedding anniversary and skied again.) As newlyweds they moved to Rowena, Tex., where Ed taught school, coached, and drove the school bus for a year as a volunteer for a Catholic lay mission-ary organization.

The Benzes returned to Detroit where Ed finished his master’s degree and received a teaching assign-ment at Cass Tech High School in Detroit. He re-

mained there for the bulk of his teaching career of more than thirty years . Most of the smart students went on to fine careers, though at least one of his students made some bad choices. Kwame is now a guest of the federal penal system.

After retiring from Cass Tech, he taught classes at the Wayne County Jail from 1993-1996. Stemming from this job, Ed has been visiting and mentoring two former students/offenders for the past 21 years. “Bill” served 11 years and now runs his own lawn care and house rehab business; “Ron” served 21 years, and was paroled in 2014. Ed said he values their friendship.

Ed’s partner, Fran worked at Bon Secours Hos-pital in Grosse Pointe for 21 years. Together they have cruised and raced on their trimaran for years, including three Mackinac races. They have climbed mountains and hiked in Nepal while visiting a daugh-ter in China. They also took a 125-mile hike on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in the foot-steps of Charlemagne, St. Francis and Shirley Ma-cLaine. They have traveled to Moscow where their son Brian, a U.S.national team member and Detroit Boat Club coach, competed in the Goodwill Games. In addition, they have worked at the Dominican Literacy Center, which, Ed said, offered them an op-portunity to count their blessings. Finally, Fran and Ed put their skills to work for a month in Kenya at a school for 950 orphan students. Their largest adven-ture, Ed says, was raising four “generous and intrepid children. He says he and Fran have had a wonderful life. By Charlie Rutherford

With two weeks left in the first half of the bowling season, 3 teams are spearated by 2 points for First Place Honors. Glenn Peters' team is cur-rently leading by 1 point over Oscar Knan's team and 2 points ove TomKneeshaw's team.

The lucky winners of Thanksgiving turkeys were Phil D'Agostino, Frank Nuvcvci, Bill Kuzel, Mike Fried, Bob Vogler, Jim mayer, Roger LeClerc, and Frank Feola who were either most over average or least under average for 3 games.

On a sad note, Gene Stover passed away at the age of 89 on November 17. He was an inspiration to us all, bowling and golfing with Club members in spite of severe tremors in his arms and hands. In his younger years, he had two 300 games to his credit. In World War II he served 2 years in the Navy aboard the USS Helm. For nearly 50 years, he operated Gene's Party Store on Kercheval, one block north of Moross Road. A memorial service will be held Janu-ary 24th, 2015 at St. Paul on the Lake at 12 noon.

History of Senior Men’s Club Choral Group

In 1965 the second President, Jesse Shields of the Senior Men's Club foresaw the need for Sub Clubs. In 1973 the newly organized Choral Group made its debut as a sub club with John Finch as Director and Harold Harder at the piano.. The lyrics for the Senior Men’s Club official song was written by Club member and Director Harold E. Jinks. Lou Mueller became the Director in 1992 with Bob Barnard at the piano, and he served until 2002. Fred Clark took over the duty as Director from Lou Mueller with Edward Rowady substituting when necessary.

Edward Rowady and Fred Clark sought and secured the extremely talented May Krager, a retired music teacher from the Grosse Pointe Public Schools, for the Choral Group’s pianist. May Krager is one of only a few musicians who are blessed with perfect pitch.

The Choral Group provides a memorial hymn and entertainment at all the Tuesday luncheons. The Choral Group also performs at special events and charitable outings when requested.

From The SMC Golf League Commit-tee: 2015 Golf Season Starts April 13th with Breakfast

With the holidays behind us and little to enjoy but the bleak of winter, we start to think spring and a new golf season. With this comes the SMC Golf League annual breakfast and kickoff, scheduled for Monday, April 13, 2015. As in the past, we’ll gather at Golden Hawk Golf Club at 8:00 am. (You can come a little earlier to have some coffee and juice, meet friends, arrange foursomes, or talk about the weather.) The buffet breakfast includes an unlimited supply of scram-bled eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, toast, juice and hot beverage. After introductions and a minimum of boring welcoming speeches during breakfast, at about 9 o’clock, we’ll break for a shotgun start of an 18 hole round of golf, weather permitting. Registration will begin as you arrive at the front entrance. We’ll have a table set up to accept cash payment for the affair. Breakfast is $10; golf (in-cluding cart-everyone must ride) is $22, same as last year. You can select both or either one for cash only. Should you wish to pay your $45 dues for 2015 membership in the League you can pay that to Nick at the top of the stairs (cash or check). Bring your clubs and hope for acceptable golf weather. The Golf Committee asks that you confirm your intention to attend the kickoff by telling one of the Committee members listed below (by phone or e-mail) or at a SMC luncheon meeting, before the kickoff. Important! You do not have to be a mem-ber of the League nor a member of the GP Senior Men’s Club to attend the breakfast, so talk it up with your friends and invite them to the breakfast. New faces will be warmly welcomed. The League has NO limitations on membership. Again this season, we will play three courses: Golden Hawk, St. Clair Shores and Chandler Park. You may play any weekday, as often as you wish, and place the scorecard in our League deposit box at each course. At St. Clair Shores our League has Thursday morning, at a reduced rate, but you must call and reserve one week in advance. St. Clair Shores is available for our play any weekday, you just won’t get our league rate, and you may only make a reservation four days ahead, unless you are

a St. Clair Shores resident, or a member of their Golf Club. At all courses you must call in for a tee time. The June & August 2015 Scrambles will be played on any weekday during the two week periods of June 15-19 & June 21-26 and August 10-14 & August 17-21. This longer time will allow teams to play scrambles at more than one course if desired. League members will be able to play for Scramble prizes at Chandler Park, Golden Hawk & St. Clair Shores with the possibility of winning three times. The prize for each winning team member in all three flights is $8. The prizes will be awarded at the Oc-tober 8nd golf banquet. Teams may also play only 9 holes one day and then a second 9 holes another day and turn them in together to form an 18 hole score, but the team members and course must be the same. More details on the Scrambles will come in later articles. For members having trouble playing a full 18 holes a day, last year’s 9 hole feature will be con-tinued. Members can play nine holes one day at any of the three courses, turn in their scores, and play any additional nine holes, any other week day at the same course or any other of our courses, or even play the same nine holes again. We will use the week of the second game to calculate the handicap and qualify it for prizes as though it was played in one day. We will continue payment for birdies & eagles like last year. Eagles will be worth $2 and Birdies $1. Each golfer will be allowed one per week at each course. First place in each flight will receive $5 and second place will receive $3 for a total of eighteen prizes each week, six at each course. Ties will split the money. Nick Kondak will be available in the lobby of the War Memorial each SMC lunch date in January, February and March to accept season dues of $45 and reservations for the breakfast and golf on April 13th The Golf Committee: Bob Vogler, Chair, 313-882-9636; 1159 York-shire, GGP 48230. The Readers Frank Markey (313-886-8324) Jack Cobau (313-885-1650)

Reading List

December Poetry Readings

A significant number, seven of us, gathered at host Bob Bradley's home for our Poetry Reading Session. Some twenty-seven poems in all were read. We like to single out original works of a member. Pete Higbie honored us with two, BUT NO FRENCH KISSES and X-WAY XPO. The later theme was "composing poems driving the X-way"!

Billy Collins's poems were the most read. A whole volume of his works was present. A story was told of his most unusual appearance before his professors in his degree quest. Robert Frost's MY NOVEMBER GUEST and his inaugural reading, THE GIFT OUT RIGHT, got attention as did the full text of the poem that he was to have read that day. Again, it did not get read aloud.

Readers had combed through anthologies to read for us from Walt Whitman, Elizabeth Bishop, Jim

Scott and Charles Wright. The writer found an at-titude poem, THE WAY OF THE WORLD by Ella Wilcox and several ditties including one by Oliver Wendell Holmes. There was a reading of FLAM-MODE from the writings of Edward Arlington Robin-son. Two Ogden Nash poems, OLD MEN and COME IN THE SENELITY IS FINE made the reading as did many more poets' works.

You missed an enriching evening. There is always next year, however. Watch for our 2015 date.

The January reading is THE GOLDFINCH by Donna Tartt. The meeting is Tuesday January 20, 2015, 5:00pm to 6:30pm, at the home of Frank Mar-key 19290 Raymond, Grosse Pointe Woods. RSVP (313) 886-8324.

The February reading is THE AVIATORS: ED-DIE RICKENBACHER, JIMMY DOOLITTLE, CHARLES LINDBERG, AND THE EPIC OF FLIGHT by Winston Groom. The meeting is Tuesday February 17, 2015, 5:00pm to 6:30pm, at the home of David Morrow 244 McMillan, Grosse Pointe Farms. RSVP (313) 303-11570.

Dale's father, Morrison Marshall and his wife also attend-ed. Morrison is the longest continuing member of the current choral group.

The evening at this beautiful site on the Detroit River was enjoyed by all, and it was a great way to begin the holiday season. You can see the enjoy-ment on the faces of the member and their wives and friends in the photo below. We were even joined by our SMC President, Charlie Rutherford and First Vice President Bob Hynes and their wives.

Our director, Fred Clark, led the singing, and he

included several songs of the season as well as a ren-dition of Lida Rose with Paul Nyquist's wife Nancy providing the accompanying solo. Our regular ac-companist, May Krager, was ill and unable to be with us. However, Richard Wolf, who accompanies the Grosse Pointe South choirs, graciously ageed to join us for the evening. He did a wonderful job.

Dinner accommodations at Bayview were out-standing. Hopefully we will be able tohold our 2015 Christmas celebration there again.

The SMC Choral Group provides our members with an aopportunity to enjoy the fellowship of oth-ers who love the fun of singing. We weould welcome any SMC member who shares our interests to join. Practices are on Tuesdays at 9:30 with the next one on January 13, 2015.
