The 2009 racing series kicked off with

The Thawout Series - 4 Sundays in April.Frigid weather kept boats off the water. With everything fromsub-zero temperatures to 18 plus inches of snow we saw it all.As warmer days seemed to be on the horizon more boats creptinto the marina and readied for the upcoming season.

    We got a total of three races over two days with 5 boats sailing(2 j24s, 1 U20, 1 Satana 20, 1 Lightning & 1 420).

Contratulations to J24 Entourage in the PHRF Fleet andLightning 15315 in the Portsmouth Fleet.

As we move into the warmer months, were all getting out on the water more. The new rulesseem to be helping reduce close calls at marks, but Im sure everyone still has somequestions about specific details. As boats meet and greet windward and leeward, itsimportant and necessary for us all to understand the rules and use the tools available (namelythe protest process) to assure those situations are resolved fairly. Unless we all play by therules, the fun will diminish, boats will drop out of the fleets and it will be difficult to justifycontinuing running races.

The more boats the better! Give the article below (Editors Letter from Sailing World, June2009) a read to better understand how we can all have more fun by playing by the rules.

Have a great spring series and get that boat out on the water!

    Best regards,John ArendtPortsmouth Fleet Captain

The weather managed to clear out on Saturday morning with partly cloudyskies and building breeze from the east. The breeze was fairly consistent fromthe east varying from 12-18 knots. Five races were completed on each courseproviding some great on the water racing competition. Many fleets hadextremely tight scores.

The competitors were brought in off the water around 5:00 pm to be welcomedby the Cherry Creek Marina staff with cold drink and food. The buzz was inthe air as to the possibility of some exciting outcomes pending Sundaysevents.

As typical with Colorado sailing this time of the year the breeze failed to arriveon Sunday. Race Committee made the decision to call the regatta at 1:00 pmafter the racers had been kept ashore under postponement since 11:00 am.

A great weekend of racing and social activities despite the lack of breeze onSunday.

A big thanks to all the sponsors who helped make the regatta a huge success.
