members supporting the Festival. He brought his winning and engaging

smile to the Festival and collected his prize of a DPHS Sports cushion.

Opening of new Association Office

This photograph of friendly DPHS boys, parents, grandparents, teachers, staff members, Old Boys, former parents and friends of the school

represents those first members of the DPHS Association (Foundation Members) who were able to attend the opening of the new DPHS Associ-

ation Office on Friday 30 May. Three very distinguished and supportive Old Boys in the photograph are David Bennett’63, Howard But-

tery’59, and Julian Thornton’48. Top left is Bruce Bamber the winner of the prize for the friendliest smile and face in the photograph.

SUPPLY STORE DPHS Old Boys from the thirties, forties and fifties vintage will be interested to know that Pat Davidson, Grand-daughter of Lillian Smith, owner of the Old DPHS Tuck Shop was amongst the supporters at the Rugby Festival. With her husband Harry they were there to support DPHS rugby and Lillian’s great, great grandson Max Da-vidson U10. A happy message for Lillian is that her Shop, so affectionately remembered by Old Boys, is still in business! It is now the home of the DPHS Association and supplies loads of nutrition to DPHS boys by way of endless support and encouragement from the members of the Association. NO NAME LANE

Kevin Bingham, Chairman of the DPHS Educational brings members the important news that ‘No name Lane’,

the narrow lane that leads from Tenth Avenue School gate to Windermere Centre and Ninth Avenue will soon

belong to the DPHS Educational Trust. The agreement between the Trust and the City Council has been con-

cluded and the Council have finally approved the sale. Congratulations Kevin Bingham and Andrew Parsons

(Previous Chairman of the School Governing Body) and Ian Bamber (Chairman of the Governing Body) for

achieving a goal that will provide the Trust and School with a lasting benefit. The Trust initative to buy the

Lane was given a tremendous boost by a munificent donation from two DPHS Old Boys who will pay for the cost

of the Lane. The Lane is presently a public thoroughfare that runs between the Trust properties Reception Unit

(Gr 0) and Preppy’s Place (Aftercare) and the John Smith Field (Lower field).

ROD SMITH TALK Your Association is pleased to announce that Rod Smith will be at DPHS to talk to parents and teachers in the Maurice Wilkinson School Hall on 6 August at 18h30. Rod is a family therapist living in the USA. His daily column in the Mercury, YOU AND ME, has many readers and Rod has a strong following in KZN. His talks at schools in Durban last year attracted full audiences. Listening to Rod is an invaluable investment in yourself, your family, school and understanding people. So please save this date! I will have more information for the school at the start of the new term.

Independent Wealth Managers are very kindly sponsoring Rod’s visit to DPHS.

The fully inclusive nature of the

DPHS Association is a highly com-

mendable and very noteworthy

characteristic of the memberships.

Whilst loyal and caring old boys

form the core or stem of the mem-

berships, we also benefit from the

memberships of teachers, past and

present, mothers, fathers, grand-

parents and even friends of the

school. We have boys in Gr0 whose

parents have signed them up and

we have a 93 year old DPHS Old

Boy amongst our members!

I have five Association jackets and

shirts for sale for members going

on the Cape Town Tour.

CAPE TOWN TOUR Will members please encourage DPHS Old Boys living or studying in Cape Town, young and old, to support the DPHS rugby teams (U 11 and U 13 - ten teams in all) who will be playing rugby against Wynberg Junior, Bishops Prep and SACS Junior on their annual tour to Cape Town at the end of July. The DPHS rugby coaches invite some of the many younger DPHS Old boys studying at Cape Town University or Stellenbosch to join the DPHS tunnel when the 1st team run on to the field before the start of a match at any one of the three match days. Old Boys are warmly invited to support the tour and join the many DPHS parents, coaches and staff members in Cape Town. I will accompany the tour and make every effort to visit DPHS Old Boy and Association member Harry Ling ’38 if he is unable to attend one of the tour matches. Wednesday 23 July: Wynberg Junior. Start at 13h00. 1st team match at 16h15 Thursday 24 July: Bishops Prep. Start at 14h00. 1st team match at 16h30 Saturday 26 July: SACS Junior. Start at 08h00. 1st team match at 12 noon.

MEMBERSHIP Thank you for joining the DPHS Association. Your membership is an open expression of support for DPHS. The winner of Cap No 2 is Bruce Hughes. Bruce’s name was drawn from a list of all the members by Reeni Ramnath in the DPHS Media Centre. I have decided to give cap number 3 to Ja-nine Bamber. The Bamber family total 9 members in all – the most members from one family and the number 3 represents her three boys, Christian, Jordan and Oliver.

PHILANTHROPIC SPIRIT The DPHS Association gratefully acknowledges the voluntary support, active interest, philanthropic spirit and generosity of Old Boys, Association Members, Parents, Businesses, Foundations and Trusts who have over the years have made sizeable monetary contributions to the DPHS Educational Trust.
