Newsletter 18/2016 Week 3 Term 4 26 October 2016 Dear Parents and Caregivers of Baverstock Oaks School I hope you have enjoyed your Labour weekend holiday with family and friends. It is generally the ‘hello’ to summer in New Zealand. Bring on the warmer weather and longer days. They have a way of lifting the spirit. I am currently working on 2017 and am pleased to say we are fully staffed for next year. The structure of the school is nearing completion and soon we will be compiling class lists. If you have any particular requests for your child regarding placement for 2017 you need to email me ([email protected]), not speak to the child’s current teacher. Teachers often move levels as it keeps them current and learning so instead of requesting a particular person describe the attributes you feel best suit your child. Remember these requests are not common and if I am able to meet your request it may mean moving your child from friends and ability grouping. The making of class lists is quite a complex science. Teachers put considerable thought into who works well together and the groupings best suited for each child. On the calendar of this newsletter I have given you all the 2017 dates for each term so you can plan family holidays in the break times so as not to disrupt your child’s learning. For those very occasional breaks in school time remember to send me a letter or email requesting leave. I hope you have all circled SATURDAY 26 NOVEMBER in your diary for our annual International Food Festival. This is a very special day in the Baverstock Oaks calendar where there is delicious food, entertainment and much more. It starts late afternoon and concluded before dark. It certainly is an event not to be missed. More will be out soon along with ticket sales information. Finally remember about prize giving and graduation coming up later in the term. Please ensure your child has the correct uniform right up to the last day. If missing anything check our overflowing lost property in lower block B. Remember hats and boy’s socks can be purchased from the office. Parent Corner – Building a problem solver…. "Children develop muscle for handling life’s challenges when you give them an opportunity to 'revisit' situations. There is so much to be learned from mistakes and ‘less-than-perfect’ behaviour." Poor behaviour is often a symptom of some turmoil in a child’s life. What surprises many parents is that listening empathetically can often be more effective in reducing a child’s stress than trying to ‘fix’ things. Read more ….http://www.theparentingplace.com/behaviour-and-discpline/teaching-problem-solving/ I hope you find these parenting corner tips useful. Often the simple little things can help value what can be invisible. I hope you are having a great start to term 4 and enjoying the longer evenings. Mary Wilson PRINCIPAL

A plea from one of our parents….. Illegal Parking: Our neighbours of the school do a wonderful job looking out for any problems on our school grounds during the weekends, evenings and holidays. We really appreciate the support they give us. Unfortunately, there have been a few incidents where

parents collecting their children in the afternoon or dropping them off in the morning are parking over private driveways and in some instances parking in our neighbours’ driveways. Some of our neighbours have resorted to taking note of license plates and have reported these to the police. Please help us live our core value of “A sense of family and learning partnerships” by parking in appropriate places when dropping off or picking up your children.

Touch Rugby Tournament A group of students represented Baverstock Oaks School in a touch rugby tournament last Tuesday. The group worked hard in their three games and made it into the semi-final. The semi-final was a hard fight but our team came through with a win and making it to the final against Point View School. We worked hard to the end and walked away with second for the day! A huge well done for showing positive sportsmanship and determination.

Ormiston Senior College Concert Band On Thursday 20 October the Acorns were lucky to have the Ormiston Senior College Concert Band visit us to play some of their songs. They were fantastic! Our children were so enthralled and after the performance, the members showed the children how their instruments worked. They got a close-up and sometimes hands-on experience. Many thanks to Matthew Garratt and his band.
