Dear kic members

‘A year where we can learn a lot, but also laugh and have a great time!’

We started this year with a lot of fun! This was the first thing that came up in my head when I started writing this preface. We want to make this year an unforgettable year together with enormously enthusiastic students. A year where we can learn a lot, but also laugh and have a great time!

The last couple of months you could have seen a few activities which have been organized by KIC. Fortu-nately there are more activities that are waiting for us! Did you know that KIC is celebrating her 10th(!!)birthday this year? This needs to be celebrated of course! The lustrum committee has already started with organizing great activities to make this week un-forgettable. I can tell you a little secret already, KIC will celebrate her birthday at the end of May 2016.Because KIC is celebrating her birthday this year, we will work with a slightly modified logo from now on. As you already could have seen on the Facebook page, the logo has been transformed into a new party logo. We will use this logo until the lustrum week starts. After the start of that week, the new KIC logo will be an-nounced. This logo will be used as the logo of KIC for the coming years. So, do you have a super cool idea, but have not send anything yet? You can send your logo to [email protected] until January 4, 2016.Besides that, KIC organizes: a company visit to 212Fahrenheit; a look behind the scenes of the pro-gram: ‘Weet ik veel’; a Christmas breakfast; a com-pany visit to the City Hall Groningen (organized by the new studysection ICU!) and we can look forward to our monthly drink! Check our social media for more activities and information about this activities.

In this newsletter you can read some experiences of recent activities, we take a look at some activities that are coming this period and our columnist will tell you about her experiences at KIC besides her study.Enjoy reading, and we will see you soon at one of our activities!

Love,

Berber PietersonPresident ’15-’16

G01

Please note that the GMM will be in Dutch*

Maybe you have heard about the term ‘General Member Meeting’ but you don’t really know what it means. That’s why we are giving a short expla-nation about what it contents!

They General Member Meeting(GMM) takes place three times a year. At the GMM we vote for the policy, decharging the old board, the charging of the new board and the balance sheet.

The first GMM is around September/October. This GMM is meant to approve the policy of the new board. We do this by voting. Every member of KIC is welcome and has a right to vote. A donor has the right to be there but not to vote.

On the GMM around February/March we evalu-

ate the past six months. What went well and what have could gone better? It is really im-portant that the board gets feedback from their members! This because then they’ll know if they are doing a good job or if there is room for improvement. We also take a look at the upcoming six months during this GMM. On the last GMM we discuss the balance sheet of the current board. This is a moment of evaluation about the whole year. After this evaluation the current board leaves and the new board gets introduced. The following photo’s where taken at the first ALV of this college year. We were presenting our policy of college year ‘15-’16

'Kic was at Lekker Nederlands'

On the 26th of November we went with a big group of ladies to Baarn. From train hopping to fries at the snack bar, we arrived at the studio in Baarn. Finally we where there! Because of our study we got a special place in the studio and got to vote for who we thought was the best during the show.Lekker Nederlands is a Dutch music television program on SBS6, where the lyrics from existing hits are translated to a Dutch version. The men of JURK! And Nick & Simon did their best, but who was the winner?Unfortunatly we can’t reveal it yet! But you can check it out on TV in February.

Anyway, it was a fun and educational day where we have laughed a lot!

SNOW COMMITTEE

13 14

Just like every year, Kic will organize a fantastic winter sport vacation. Of course this doesn’t just fall out of the blue sky and preparations are need-ed to create such an epic week. After an incredi-ble suspense in the selection for the winter sport committee the honor this year goes to Katja, Tabe and Joris. “Applause”Thank you very much.

So what do we do exactly? The foundation of our preparation consists of finding the perfect location where you all can show your fabulous tips and tricks, promotion with posters/flyers/Facebook page and the search for a ski teacher who dares to give lessons to this bunch of people. In short, a lot of practical business. And even if we’re stuck we are being assisted by experts of the highest level.

Self-evidently this isn’t our only task. Because when we speak about an epic week, we promise an Epic week with the capital E. To keep the sus-pense we can’t add any more to this but have faith that Après-ski won’t have the same meaning after a week with KIC.

This year we will go in the spring vacation to the beautiful Valfréjus. A cosy French area surround-ed by larch trees, pine trees and even a two kilo-meter toboggan run if you’re tired of those long sticks under your feet.

So is your vacation still empty and would you like to go for an amazingly cheap price to the snowy mountains?Don’t hesitate and sign up!

With cold but sunny greetings,

KIC has quite a lot of committees. Last year I was a member of the Almanac Committee, and this year I am a columnist as a part of Studio KIC. But why did I become an active member, you ask? “Because it is fun and it teaches you a lot” is such a cliché answer, and I don’t think it is satisfactory. Let me start at the beginning.

In my first year I became a member of KIC, but I wasn’t active. I thought it was a great idea to be-long to something in this new town. I come from a small village near Zwolle, and hardly knew any-one in Groningen. But what being an active mem-ber meant, I had no idea. Moreover I was too shy at the time to randomly walk into the office and ask about it. Which was ridiculous, of course: KIC is a very open and friendly association. But that’s how I spent my first year: only going to the drinks once in a while.

My second year at Hanze came to a start, and I thought my own introduction week was so much fun, that I decided to become a buddy. After this week I really felt the urge to become an active member. By this time I had met some more peo-ple at KIC and thought it was less scary. However, I forgot to sign up for it. So when Hil-de told me in February that there would be an opening spot in her Almanac committee, I acted immediately. And with that, I was an active mem-ber within two weeks. The girls in the commitee warmly welcomed me, and I felt instantly comfort-able with them. I learnt so much being in this com-mission, and I am so happy I became an active

member.

Love,Zoë

Piece of kicThe last couple of months the members of the social activity committee have done a great job of making every KIC party a big success. We are really curious about how it is to be a member of this crew and that’s why we asked a committee member about his experiences with the committee. How did he end up at KIC and why did he choose for the social activity committee? These are a couple of questions that Bart Roozen answers in the text below. Enjoy!

For two years I have been to some parties. For two years I have shared a house with two committee members. And in those two years I have met some amazing people. A lot of these people asked me why I wasn’t an active member of KIC. And when I told them that I wasn’t even a member at all, they really didn’t understand. The bad image of societies and my appreciation of peace were a few of the reasons. But the more I learned about the society, the more I started to emphatize. KIC exists because of her members.

For me, the turning point was the foreign trip. For a week I had to put up with a bus full of CMI people. Unconsciously I spent time with everyone and participated in all the activities. Looking back, it was one of the best holidays I have ever experienced. Because those five days felt like a relaxed and fun holiday. And I’m not even exaggerating.. After a few weeks of sobering down I finally decided to become an active member, in secret.

I became a member for that trip so that I received 20 euro’s of discount on this foreign trip. A two year membership with KIC. I auditioned for a few committees and gave the new logo a try. And if I couldn’t join the Social Activities Commission(SACO), I would’ve liked to be a freelancer for KIC. There was enough choice for me.

Nice story; could be shorter. My task at the SACO is to brainstorm about fun activities and themes for parties, togeth-er with nine other people. Sometimes I can play with Photoshop and sometimes with a pair of scissors, to dress up a party location. When the moment is finally there, I can be the host. And we can all do what we love. Together with the board of KIC and Welcome Students Groningen we plan and organise everything. And now I look forward to another year full of new connections, fun and the necessary distraction from studying.

212 FAHRENHEITOn the 10th of December we had a compa-ny visit at 212 Fahrenheit. 212 Fahrenheit is a creative company that is situated in Gronin-gen. On their website Fahrenheit says: “adver-tising agency, communication agency, design-ers, artists? It is hard to define Fahrenheit. “ What stood out for me is that they don’t think in means like an advertisement on Facebook. They are looking for goals, these goals are de-termined together with the client. This is the ideal way to create a perfect solution for every company!

During the company visit we got to see cases that 212 Fahrenheit did the last years. They not only told us about what they did, but also why. For instance, they had an order from a lo-cal music school. This school wanted to bring more young people in contact with creating music. 212 Fahrenheit did this by making an instrument that can be played by everyone and by more than one person at a time. Bringing young people in contact with making

music can happen in a million different ways. An advertisement, a commercial; many pads could have lead them there. Eventually Fahren-heit chose a other way and they came up with something unique and authentic. That was the idea of the music machine! This machine had to be playable for everyone and give people the experience of how cool it is to make music to-gether. This machine made a tour along high schools and got attention from several radio and television programs.

The great thing was that the machine worked! Young people got really enthusiastic from the music that they made and 212Fahrenheit be-came a finalist for the European Design Awards 2015!

And this is only an example from one of the cool thing they create! The company visit was very inspiring. For more projects of 212Fahrenheit you can have a look at their website: www.212f.nl

lus•trum (lŭs′trəm) (< Latin: luere) was originally a peace offer that the romans had once a five years.

Hi!The meaning that you can read here is not what our lustrum committee is about, ofcourse. Although if you want to offer someone or some animal to celebrate the 10th year existence of KIC, we may have to have

a little talk with you.... ;)

No, we are not doing a kissing sacrifice. What we are going to do, stays a secret. But we are going to make sure that the week from the 23th until the 27th of May

is dedicated to KIC her 10th birthday!

Together with Brenda, Robbert, Marloes, Erno, Rosa and our chairman Kyra we will plan a week full with fun activities so that everyone can be a part of this ju-bilee. And for the members that are already a part of KIC a little bit longer: maybe you will recognize some

activities or themes from the past 5 years!

To get you a little bit exited for the lustrum we have made an awesome lustrum logo by our own Marloes! Don’t get confused because of the competition for the new KIC logo, because during the lustrum the

new KIC logo will be announced. Besides that, we invite you to like our own lustrum Facebook page, which will be created in January. Here you can follow the preparations and activities

of our committee.

We are really looking forward to the lustrum week! You too?!

ESCAPE HUNT

It was Friday night. The blue skies of the after-noon had changed into the deep darkness of the night, and the temperature had dropped quite a bit. It was a fall evening like every other, we thought. But nothing appeared to be less true. Father and mother were acting ever so strange lately. Father had even applied for a divorce. None of us children knew what was going on exactly. The moment came that both father and mother were not at home. We had the house to ourselves for one whole hour. Our curiosity over-came our good behaviour, it was time to find out the truth.

Our Sherlock Holmes skills helped us to find out that the bookcase in the living room was a secret doorway to a hidden room. In that room we found new clues which led us in the direction of the truth. Soon we found yet another secret room. The moment we entered it, an alarm rang. “YOU ARE ENTERING MY PRIVATE ROOM. SECU-RITY HAS BEEN WARNED. LEAVE, NOW!” Shocked as we were by this sudden voice, we took everything we could and ran – screaming and heart pounding – out of the room. However, the answer to all questions lied in that room. The moment we realised that, we went back. There was a screen in the room, and just outside the room was a panel we could use to create numbers on the screen. We also found a calendar, which said “April – 17 – turn me on”. After a couple of minutes of wondering what this could mean, we got the clue. We used the pan-el to make the number 17 on the screen in the room and we could continue.Eight minutes before our parents would come home, we finally found the ultimate truth. Mother appeared to be having an affair with an old flame of hers, and father had found out. Did this mean the end of our happy little family? The answer to this ever so pressing question we shall never know. This was the end of the Escape Hunt. We had solved the mystery of the English Family Drama, and found the code to open the door to freedom. Back to reality, please! author: Zoë Frijlink
