Community celebrations have marked this week as we celebrate NAIDOC Week. This year’s theme of NAIDOC is ‘Our Languages Matter’, and this theme resonates with me. Language helps us to explain our world. It helps us to build relationships, it helps us to communicate, it helps us to lead the way, to story tell and to sing, it helps us to celebrate, express compassion, love and to show that we care. The care that our staff have shown in putting together a week of celebrations is worthy of recognition. Ms Kimm Naden and her team (of both staff and students) have shown real leadership through their initiative and coordination of events – our formal assembly on Tuesday captured the essence of student achievement and we were privileged to host former student Miss Alex Carr as our guest speaker. Our NAIDOC Dinner highlighted the strengthening community links as our hall filled with parents, elders, children and staff to mark the importance of building relationships for the betterment of our youth. On Thursday afternoon, the concept of play was well and truly to the fore as students participated in Traditional Indigenous Games. And it is the betterment of our school community which continues to drive so much of the enthusiasm at Gilgandra High School. In this vein I am pleased to announce that the captains elect for 2018, who indeed have very big shoes to fill, are: Captains Jasper Schembri and Abby Ryan. Vice Captains Andrew Dinsey and Meg Horan. To me, the act of leadership is a choice, and it is not solely about rank. I commend these four students on their election to the very senior posts of Captain and Vice Captain. I, and the school community, are enthused by the result and I look forward to the contribution these four fine young people will bring to the role. Neal Reed Principal Captains and Vice Captains elect for 2018: Jasper Schembri, Abby Ryan, Andrew Dinsey and Meg Horan. Congratulations to these students.

Hello everyone Congratulations to Year 12 who successfully completed the HSC Trials. This is the most important time of your HSC preparation, so make each day count and seek out any advice from your classroom teachers to assist you. NAIDOC week has been running this week. The Dinner was very well presented and received by members of the community. The night was important with the theme of “Every Language Counts” relayed through song, dance, speeches and interaction. All students who participated were exceptional in their representation of the school. Massive thanks to Kimm Naden for her efforts, Dylan Smith for the great feast, all the Aboriginal Education team and everyone involved on the night. For Year 11, your exams will begin on Monday. There are spare timetables available, so please see me. When you are not in the exam, you are in class, and you are in school uniform throughout the exam period. Be prompt to every exam to maximise the time limits available. Good luck to you all. On a general note, congratulations to the students of the school who are continuing to make Term 3 so enjoyable. It is very pleasing to see the number of students involved in physical activity. Remember to keep the playground clean, it has improved in the last fortnight, which is great. Despite efforts, Isaac Frost continues to make a mockery of the Marine Quiz. Good luck this week (apart from Isaac) Josh Webb Deputy Principal

From the English Faculty... As the end of Term 3 draws closer, the Year 12 teachers are working with their seniors to refine their analytical and composition skills prior to the external Higher School Certificate examinations in October. This Year 12 cohort, working in the three classes of Advanced, Standard and Studies, have been a strong and engaged group. Mrs Lambell, Miss Graham and Miss Patton have been im-pressed with their diligence, camaraderie and aca-demic progression. Mrs Reed, has made similar comment in regard to her Year 12 Drama class whilst Mrs Lambell and Mr Smith, the teachers of Modern History and Society & Culture respective-ly, have been supremely impressed with the work ethic of their humanities students. The Faculty, as a whole wishes, Year 12 the very best for their HSC. The Year 11 English and Ancient History classes are preparing for the Week 9 Yearly Exams. This final assessment of the Preliminary course will be challenging and rewarding, identifying achieved skills and possible revision activities that will sup-port the commencement of their HSC studies in Term 4. Mrs Reed, Miss Patton, Miss Graham and Mrs Collier are looking forward to reading the Year 11 exam responses. The junior classes have been involved in some very interesting activities of late. In Mrs Lambell's Year 10 English classes, the novel studies of To Kill a Mockingbird and Stormbreaker have con-cluded, and both classes have moved on to their multimodal unit on Teenage Representation. All are excited to be studying texts (films, songs, sto-ries) that represent their peer group. There has even been a hint that teenage snacks may make an appearance (cue poems about hot chips). Speaking of food, Miss O'Sullivan and Miss Patton have been using snacks to share historical and French contextual knowledge in HSIE and LOTE classes. Food is always a great way to gain understand of culture.

Gilgandra High School would like to thank the Davison family who have generously donated a trailer load of
