I can announce that they are recovering well in hospital and may well be home today to recuperate there. This was a major incident at the school and I would like to thank the staff team for their professionalism in dealing with the situation and caring for the students and also the community members who assisted as part of the first response team. The Onewhero community is lucky to have such a dedicated team of volunteers who are willing to drop what they are doing to assist in an emergency. Thank you to all involved. In addition to the above, we do have access to extra counselling services if any of your children are feeling anxious or stressed about the situation. We will be monitoring children at school for signs of stress. I would like to explain the decision-making process around school closures so that it is transparent why the school gets closed during power outages in severe weather conditions. Firstly, during severe weather events we rely on Counties Power to give us reliable information about the outage(s) and when they are likely to be fixed. The Ministry of Education regulations state that if the school is without running water for more than two hours we cannot remain open. As our water is powered by electric pump then we need power to operate it. Yesterday, Counties Power were unable to give any information on the outage at 6.40am and would not be able to provide any information until about 7.15 as they had yet to attend the scene. There were also multiple outages across the region. A decision on closure needs to be made by 6.50am in order to inform the bus drivers in time and for parents to make arrangements. I understand that this is a big inconvenience for many people with their work commitments but it was great to see the community rallying around with offers of childcare. Newsletter 13 26th June 2020

Principal’s Message: Kia ora whānau,

Firstly, I am sure that you are all anxious for news of the staff member who was injured and airlifted to hospital.

In addition to the above, we do have access to extra counselling services if any of your children are feeling anxious

or stressed about the situation. We will be monitoring children at school for signs of stress.

I would like to explain the decision-making process around school closures so that it is transparent why the school

gets closed during power outages in severe weather conditions. Firstly, during severe weather events we rely on

Counties Power to give us reliable information about the outage(s) and when they are likely to be fixed. The

Ministry of Education regulations state that if the school is without running water for more than two hours we

cannot remain open. As our water is powered by electric pump then we need power to operate it. Yesterday,

Counties Power were unable to give any information on the outage at 6.40am and would not be able to provide

any information until about 7.15 as they had yet to attend the scene. There were also multiple outages across the

region. A decision on closure needs to be made by 6.50am in order to inform the bus drivers in time and for

parents to make arrangements. I understand that this is a big inconvenience for many people with their work

commitments but it was great to see the community rallying around with offers of childcare.

On Tuesday we received good news from the property team at the Ministry of Education. We have been approved

for two brand new classrooms in one block in the senior school. The likely site of these rooms will be in front of the

senior courts looking out onto the field. This will free up classrooms lower down in the school. We are told that

these should be finished by the end of this year. This is exciting news for us and recognition of the roll growth in

the school over the last few years.

With one week to go until the end of term I would encourage you to talk to your children about making good

decisions at school. We often see that due to tiredness at the end of term, some students struggle to make good

choices around their behaviour. Please reinforce this message to your children at home.

Have a great weekend. Kia pai tō rā whakatā.

Hei manaaki,

Simon Craggs

PhotoLife Online Ordering:

Photos are ready to be viewed and ordered online. The photo access keys have been distributed to classrooms, your child should receive this over the next couple of days. There is a free delivery period to school. To utilise this you must order your photos by Midnight on Sunday 19th July 2020.

Conferences Update: Student conferences are being held at the beginning of Term 3 on Monday 27th July from 3:15pm - 5:30pm, and on

Tuesday 4th August, from 3:15pm - 7:30pm. These conferences are held with subject teachers so that you can gain

information about your child’s learning in each subject. We highly recommend students attend these meetings to

be part of the discussion. To book conferences go to https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/

Unfortunately we had an error in the booking system for student conferences and as a result it has had to be reset.

Parents that had already booked will need to book again using the new code. All new bookings need to use the

new code. The new code is 2umjb

We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused especially for those of you that had already booked. We have

added an extra step in the process to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Guest Speaker - Brooke Neal: We are very excited and proud to announce that on Thursday July 30th we will be welcoming Brooke Neal, former

NZ Blacksticks player and Olympian to our school for the day. As well as being a very successful athlete, Brooke is

the creator of ‘Finding her Balance’ courses for young female athletes.

Thanks to John Andrew Ford, Brooke will be here to inspire, empower and help equip our students/athletes with

tools to find ‘balance’. We are very lucky to have Brooke with us for the day.

If you would like to learn more about Brooke before she arrives, check out her website www.brookeneal.co.nz .

Our program for the day will look like this;

10 – 10.45 am – Junior Assembly (years 1-6)

11 – 11.30 am –Senior Assembly (Year 7 – 13)

Period 3 and 4 – Finding your balance workshops

Students who are Year 11-13, female, and interested in attending the workshops with Brooke in the afternoon

needs to see Whaea Anna to register. If Brooke is able to take more students, then we may be able to offer this

opportunity to our year 9 and 10s also.

There is also a strong possibility that Brooke will stay for a community event in the evening. This would be held at

school, start at 5.30pm and be open to our community members.

SAVE THE DATE – more details to follow.

Thanks for this amazing opportunity John Andrew Ford.

OAS School App: To keep totally informed please check that you have subscribed to all the alert groups that could relate to your

child. Go to School Aps NZ and upload OAS School.

Wellbeing in School: Student wellbeing is an important aspect of school life, and one which we are constantly looking to improve. To

help with this, students aged 8 and above will be completing a short survey next week, run by Awesome Schools

(www.awesomeschools.com). The responses will give us a picture of student wellbeing now, and flag any students

whose responses are a cause for concern in terms of poor wellbeing, or bullying issues. All students will receive an

individual report, which will be up-dated in Term 4 when a repeat survey will be done.

There is also a wellbeing survey available for parents/caregivers from Monday 29th June. This survey is free, and

can be used to measure personal wellbeing. Once done, participants will receive their own wellbeing report, which

is private and confidential. If you would like to take this survey, you will need to go on to the Awesome Schools

web site under Adult, and enter Onewhero. Alternatively, you can send us your up-dated email address, and we

will send you the appropriate link.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr Mann ([email protected] or 02 232 8866 ext 202)

Ag Day 2020 – Saturday 17 October Ag Days, or Calf Clubs, are an annual tradition for rural schools and encourage children to learn about the care of farm animals by rearing a lamb, goat, calf and/or chickens. The Onewhero Area School Ag Day will be held on Saturday 17 October this year and is open to Year 1-8 students and pre-schoolers (lambs and goats only, which they will parade at the beginning of Ag Day).

We continue to have an amazing response from the school community about the inclusion of other pets – dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and more – so we will be hosting these animals again! It’s a great way to include those students who care for animals but may not have the space to raise a lamb, goat, calf and/or chickens.

We have enough interest and support to include CALVES at Ag Day this year! We will ensure there are biosecurity measures in place to minimise the risk of mycoplasma bovis and keep the animals safe.

Spud in the Bucket Competition … Enter Now! Year 1-8 students have the opportunity to enter the Spud in the Bucket competition again this year, with awards for the Heaviest Potato and Greatest Collective Weight of Spuds up for grabs. Each bucket of potatoes is ‘weighed in’ the day before Ag Day. Entry forms are now available from the school office (or see the newsletter attachments) and will need to be delivered with the entry fee ($2), to the office by Tuesday 30 June. One entry per student. Seed potatoes and buckets will be handed out to entrants on Thursday 2 July.

Ag Day Animal Entries Ag Day is closer than you think! Calves born after 21 June 2020, and lambs and goats born after 1 July 2020 are eligible for entry in this year’s Ag Day, as are dogs, other (small) pets and the chickens that arrive next week. Entries will open at the end of Term 2… watch this space!

Chicken Orders Chicken orders have now CLOSED. If you have ordered baby chickens, remember to collect them next Wednesday 1 July from school at 3.00pm. You will need to bring a closed box (with air holes), no smaller than a shoe box, to the office before the day of collection. Our Ag Day volunteers box the chickens up during school hours on the day of collection so they are ready to go home with you at 3.00pm.

Please note that students cannot take the chickens home on the school buses.

Those students who are thinking about showing their chickens at Ag Day will be given a diary to complete while they are rearing their chickens. Just ask for a diary when you collect your chickens. One diary per student.

Group Day The Franklin South Group Day will be held on Thursday 29 October and hosted by Kaiaua School. Calves will be included at Group Day this year! Onewhero Ag Day Planning Meeting Monday 20 July, 6.30pm If you're keen and able to help make Ag Day a fantastic event for the kids and community, then come along to the meeting to find out more. We'll meet in the school staff room from 6.30pm. If you're unable to make the meeting,

More Information We will be posting regular updates to the school newsletter and the Ag Day Facebook page

Sports Hoodies: Sports hoodies can be ordered via the school office. There are sample sizes to try on and orders need to be pre-

paid. Once we have 6 hoodies on the list, ready to go, we will place the order and they usually take around 2 weeks

to arrive. Any questions – email Anna Ronaki – [email protected]

Unfortunately Secondary Schools nationals will not go ahead this year. We will look at other opportunities for the girls to play.

Junior Volleyball girls:

15 keen Girls are currently training at 7.30am on Monday. After the success of our Senior girls volleyball team, we are now ready to start up a Junior team.

Trainings will start this Monday at 7.30am at school and are free for all girls year 8-10 keen to learn to play volleyball! They will be once per week for now. There is no cost to train for volleyball.

A junior team will be formed to participate in the Waikato and Auckland competitions later on in the year, as well as the Auckland Champs in November at Bruce Pulman in Takanini. Costs will then be divided over the players.

Any girls keen to play volleyball, please let Anke van Dijk know or email [email protected] or show up at training!
