Warm athletic greetings to you all!

At Papanui Toc-H this summer we're aiming to take the best coaching from previous seasons and to build on this already strong platform in the junior and senior sections of the club.

Our athletes are at the centre of everything we do and we want to provide a respectful coaching environment that focuses on growing athletic competence leading to personal achievement.

Senior coaching for athletes 15years and older takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays 5-7pm and on Sundays from 10am-12noon or in the afternoon depending on which squad athletes are training in.

Tuesday Junior Club nights remains focused on the Five Star athletic programme for 7-14year old athletes and this is the first step for any young person keen on athletics.

Thursday Junior Coaching nights are for junior athletes wanting to improve their athletic skills with qualified and experienced club coaches. The cost for Thursday training is $40 for 16 Thursday sessions (11 Oct - 13 Dec, 24 Jan - 14 Mar).

On Thursdays our expectations are that:

1. - Parents will have athletes to training in time for the start (by 5.30pm) and be ready to pick athletes up within 15minutes of the scheduled finish time (7pm)

2. - Athletes will focus, pay attention and behave in a respectful manner towards coaches and parent helpers (if present)

3. - Coaches will engage with athletes to provide competent, consistent and professional coaching for athletes

Papanui Toc-H is actively growing its coaching capability and we are always keen to support parents who have an interest in this area into learning basic coaching theory and practice. As always we are always keen for a helping hand in a number of events or just helping with things like set up and packing down.

Our coaching team across the junior and senior club look forward to working with committed children, youth and senior athletes. Best wishes, Chris Mene Coaching Convenor Papanui Toc-H Athletic Club

In December 2011 Southland Children’s Athletics was offered the hosting rights to the 2013 South Island Colgate Games. Acceptance was a tinged with sadness knowing that the proud province of Canterbury has had the opportunity to host this event taken away (for now) due to the devastating earthquakes they have experienced. Our thoughts are with them as they embark on a new beginning for their sport. On the other hand we also are very excited to do our part in Southland as we have all competed in and attended many Colgate Games over the years and it is now time for us do our bit to carry on the traditions that are the Colgate Games.

Tuesday BBQ Help needed We need someone new to take over running the BBQ on a Tuesday night. The kids and most adults enjoy a sausage at the end of the evening but we no longer have anyone run it. We will roster helpers but need someone to take the lead. If interested please contact me on

The  Colgate  Games

The Colgate Games are held annually in both the North and the South Islands, and are coordinated by the New Zealand Children’s Athletic Association Inc. The games are a great athletic and social event, and a chance to meet other athletes from other centre’s. The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment, and entry is open to any registered athlete not just Saturday athletes.

Our club usually has a good turn out and it is a great event. The event moves location from year to year, and this year the South Games are in Invercargill.

We need someone to take on the organisation of this event – interested parties please contact Barbara on:

Tuesday Club Nights

Papanui  Toc  H  Athletic  evenings  are  developed  for  children  to  participate  and  have  fun  as  well  as  providing  them  and  young  adults  with  the  skills  of  running,  jumping  and  throwing,  which  will  develop  balance  and  special  awareness.

These  evenings  are  on  Tuesdays  from  5.30  to  7.00  pm.

Shoes  are  to  be  worn  at  all  times.

A  toilet  can  be  found  in  the  clubrooms.

Trophies  are  presented  at  the  club  break-‐up  for  various  achievements.  Season  Points  for  the  boys  and  girls  who  score  the  highest  points  over  the  season  in  each  age  group  -‐  points  are  awarded  for  the  best  performances  in  each  event.  Those  who  participate  regularly  have  a  greater  chance  of  scoring  points.  No  points  are  scored  until  the  3rd  week-‐  every  week  points  will  be  scored  unless  there  is  a  part  programme.  Club  Championships  at  the  end  of  the  season  has  scoring  based  on  a  decathlon  type  system.  Only  Financial  athletes  are  eligible  to  score  points

The  athletes  also  take  part  in  the  Colgate  5  Star  Programme  which  is  an  incentive  scheme  based  on  personal  improvement  with  certificates  awarded  on  achieving  specified  performance  levels.  Athletes  must  be  registered  before  results  will  be  calculated.  Results  for  the  first  two  weeks  of  the  season  are  not  counted  towards  these  awards.  Results  are  taken  from  the  Tuesday  Night  Competition  only.  For  those  athletes  competing  on  Saturday  mornings  only  Hurdles  and  the  Track  Walk  events  are  included  towards  the  5  Star  Awards.  Results  will  also  be  compiled  and  added  from  the  two  main  Children’s  competitions  of  the  season.  These  are  the  Colgate  Games  and  the  Canterbury  Champs.

Papanui  TocH  Best  Performances:  Best  performances  have  been  collected  since  2001.  They  are  updated  during  the  season.  They  taken  from  Tuesday  Night  Competition,    Saturday  mornings,  Colgate  Games  and  the  Canterbury  Champs.  No  other  results  will  be  looked  at  for  these  awards.

Parents  and  children,  if  you  believe  you  have  reached  a  level  on  the  5  Star  Award  scheme  or  bettered  a  previous  Best  Performance,  please  see  me  and  I  will  organise  for  the  records  to  be  checked.

Tuesday Club Nights

Over  a  two  week  period  the  children  will  participate  in  the  following  events  by  doing  3  or  4  events  each  club  night  for  full  details  of  the  programme  for  each  night  please  see  the  notice  board.

5  &  6  yrs    :  50m,  60m,  80m,  shot,  discus,  Long  Jump,

7  –  9  yrs  :  60m,  80m,  100m,  200m,  Shot,  Discus,  Long  Jump,  High  Jump

10  +  yrs  :  60m,  80m,  100m,  200m,  400m,  Shot,  Discus,  Long  Jump,  High  Jump,1500m  alternating  with  800m  on  alternate  weeks.  These  races  start  at  5.15pm  so  please  be  early  to  compete

Our  success  on  Tuesday  nights  is  to  have  help  from  many  adults.  To  run  2  long  jumps,  2  shot  puts,  2  high  jumps,  2  discus  events  plus  the  track  events  requires  many  helpers.  This  year  we  are  going  to  bring  back  a  roster  in  order  that  all  families  contribute  to  the  running  of  our  Tuesday  nights  making  it  fairer  to  all.  We  will  be  asking  that  all  families  put  their  names  down  for  a  minimum  of  4  help  sessions  through  the  season  where  you  will  be  expected  to  help  out  on  one  event  all  night.  Alternatively  you  can  take  on  a  new  AGM  role  either  on  4  sessions  through  the  season  or  as  a  regular  role  -‐  see  below.  If  you  fail  to  volunteer  we  will  allocate  you  sessions.  It  will  be  up  to  the  individual  to  cover  this  session  and  arrange  a  swap  if  needed.  When  you  are  on  “duty”  at  an  event  it  is  expected  that  you  will  arrive  at  5pm  and  help  set  up  your  event  for  the  evening.  It  is  also  expected  that  you  stay  until  your  event  is  finished  and  help  pack  it  away  at  the  end.

We  will  be  teaching  the  running  of  events  to  athletes  and  families  alike  for  the  first  2  weeks  of  the  season.

New  AGM  role  is  being  rolled  out  to  try  and  maximize  the  Colgate  5  Star  system.  The  AGM  (age  group  manager)  will  be  following  the  progress  of  the  athletes  in  your  group,  comparing  it  to  the  5  Star  standard  and  encouraging  them  to  meet  the  next  target,  or  a  PB  or  even  just  to  improve  on  that  day’s  performance.  The  ideal  is  to  have  1  or  2  parents  attached  to  each  group  for  the  season.  This  role  is  ideal  for  someone  who  wishes  to  go  round  with  his  or  her  child  every  week  anyway  and  is  happy  to  help  out.  Further  information  will  be  made  available.  When  in  an  AGM  role  on  the  roster  only  basis  we  expect  that  you  come  at  5pm  to  help  set  up  the  other  events.  If  you  have  a  regular  weekly  AGM  role  this  will  not  necessarily  be  expected  every  week  but  will  be  helpful  if  and  when  you  can  manage  it.

Remember  that  despite  whether  you  are  on  “duty”  or  not  you  must  be  responsible  for  your  children  at  all  times.  We  cannot  be  responsible  for  your  children  and  a  caregiver  is  expected  to  stay  each  week.
