  • PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK – EMERGENCY SICK CALLS ONLY: 07805 696474

Communion for the sick and housebound: We have received a number of requests from people who are housebound and from the extraordinary ministers who usually visit, to resume housebound visitations. Given the present Covid-19 safety concerns, regular visits remain suspended. However if you feel the need for one of the clergy to make a brief visit please do get in touch.

Please note, at times of serious illness and end of life situations, the clergy are on-hand to make visitations and administer the Sacraments. Please use the emergency number above.

    PRAYER REQUESTS

Please pray for the repose of the souls of Mary Richards, Fr Michael Ronan, David Carroll, John Evans, Maureen Taylor, Frances Shinkwin, all those who given their lives in service of our country, and all who have died recently and for those whose anniversaries occur at this time.

Please continue to pray for those suffering with Coronavirus, those who have died from the virus and most importantly plead for the end of the pandemic. A Plenary Indulgence is available to all who pray for these intentions under the usual conditions of making Sacramental Confession, Holy Communion (both as soon as possible after the lockdown) and prayers for the intentions of Pope Francis (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be). Acts to be performed for the indulgence include read the Holy Scriptures for at least half an hour, or recite the Rosary or the Way of the Cross. As is evident to all, the recitation of prayers and the reading of the Bible can be done without leaving home, and therefore in full compliance with the rules to counter the spread of the virus.

Please also remember in your prayers: Catherine O’Hehir, Angela Sweeney, Canon William Isaac, Mike Glennon, Kevin Maguire, Nancy Small, George Blackborow, John & Denise Roberts, Fr Ambrose Walsh, Doreen Price, Olive Adams, Stanley Whitfield, Baby Roscoe Whitby, Biddy Williams, Debbie Burnett (Reynish), Reg Gough, Terrence Rose, Sr. Denise, Jeanette Bassett, John Ryan, Pat Bowen, Daniel Gabriel, Monica Pugsley, Catherine Wenegrieme, Annie Cutinha, Jean Main, Margaret Millwater, Zoe Coleman, Mellisah M and all the sick at home or in our hospitals, and all who care for them.

To add a request please contact one of the priests.

    CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

NHS TEST AND TRACE – the new NHS Test and Trace app has now been launched and St. Mary’s has been registered as a check in location. You can download the App from the Apple App Store or GooglePlay.

PARISH HALL FACILITIES – remain CLOSED at this time.

SICK VISITATIONS – The sick and housebound can make a request of the clergy to make a brief visit in time of need; regular visits cannot be resumed at this time. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are also not able to carry Communion to the sick and housebound at present.

FUNERALS – the celebration of Funeral Rites resumes at St. Mary’s from the week commencing Monday 16th November.

BAPTISMS – the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism remains suspended until safety concerns can be addressed adequately. However, in the event of an emergency the priests remain on hand via the emergency sick call number.

    PARISH NOTICES

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) – Resumes this coming Saturday; there will be two opportunities for the Sacrament. The first will be at St. Mary’s church at 11.00am – 12.00pm. Secondly, the period of Drive-thru and walk in Confessions resumes on Saturday at St. David’s church from 1.00pm – 2.00pm. The priests are also for the Sacrament via appointment.

  • NOVEMBER – MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS - Traditionally, during the month of November, we remember those who have died and gone before us. It is a spiritual work of mercy to pray for our dead. As we are in very strange times and to give everyone an opportunity to submit their Holy Souls lists. The forms are available online and you can also ask a steward for a form and envelope to take home. As none of us can predict when our churches can reopen a central Holy Souls list for All Saints will be compiled. A Mass each day throughout November will be offered for those we name on our lists. Visit https://allsaintsrcnewport.org.uk/holy-souls/ for more information. Alternatively, if you print off the page at the end of the newsletter, you can send it in through the post.

    – Thanks to all who have submitted their lists of loved ones to be enrolled in the Book of Remembrance this year. In addition to the book being placed at the altar in St. Mary’s, it will be available to read virtually via the dedicated link on the parish website homepage from 10pm on Saturday 31st November 2020.

NOVEMBER INDULGENCE – It is the usual custom of the Church that during 1st – 8th November we may gain Plenary Indulgences for the faithful departed by performing certain acts such as praying in the church on All Souls Day or visiting the cemetery. Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the need to avoid large groups from forming where prohibited, the Apostolic Penitentiary has announced that the Plenary Indulgence applicable to the deceased by those who visit a cemetery is available on any day in November and devoutly prays for the faithful departed. The same principle applies for visiting the church devoutly and praying the Our Father and the Creed. The housebound can also gain the Indulgence by “uniting themselves spiritually to other members of the faithful”, which is most easily fulfilled of course through our livestream or listening to the telephone service when we know Mass is being celebrated. In addition to these acts it is necessary to pray for the Holy Fathers intentions and make sacramental Confession and Communion as soon as is possible with the current restrictions. Indulgences are often a topic of contention, with some thinking they are a hangover from the Reformation, but there is Scriptural evidence for them, which you can use your FORMED subscription to find out about https://watch.formed.org/videos/are-indulgences-biblical

FORMED – Thanks to all who have taken advantage of the FREE subscription thus far to a wonderful a multi-platform resource, with videos, films and books. FORMED gives us the opportunity to delve deeper into the scriptural foundations of the faith that we Catholic’s hold most dear. If you haven’t already signed up for your FREE subscription as a gift from the parish visit https://allsaintsrcnewport.org.uk/formed to find out more. See the end of the newsletter for this week’s recommendation of what to access on FORMED.

A Message from the Sisters of St. Elizabeth Convent in Belarus

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The joyous Christmas season is approaching! The season that is filled with love, family and, most importantly, God.

As you may be aware, Sisters from the St. Elisabeth Convent (Minsk, Belarus) are unable to participate in annual Christmas markets in our region due to travel restrictions. Nevertheless, they have found a great way to spread the Christmas joy, love and deeds of mercy.

They are launching the very first Online Christmas Market this year, so that people from all over the world can purchase Christmas presents and souvenirs made with love and continuous prayer.

    Please, click here to participate:

    https://catalog.obitel-minsk.com/christmas-market

Through purchasing beautiful Christmas gifts, each one of us will be able to serve the poor, sick, homeless and lonely people. Because every item purchased at the Online Market is a donation towards one of the Convent’s ministries.

The Online Christmas Market of St. Elisabeth Convent offers a range of unique handmade items that will make memorable Christmas gifts

Sisters are sending their prayers and blessings from Minsk.

  • St. Mary’s Social Club

At the request of the Trustees of the Archdiocese St. Mary’s Institute is presently closed and the alcohol licence has not been renewed. This means that the bar which operates under the name of “St. Mary’s Catholic Social Club” (The Club) will be wound up voluntarily at a Special General Meeting of Club members to be held as a Zoom meeting. All parishioners may take part in this Zoom meeting:

    Date: Sunday 15th November 2020

    Time: 12.30pm

    Zoom ID: 819 0598 1387

    Passcode: 856062

All assets of “St. Mary’s Catholic Social Club” will be transferred to the Parish for the benefit of parishioners.

The motion being put forward for the meeting reads:

“That St Mary’s Catholic Social Club be wound up voluntarily; that all assets of St Mary’s Catholic Social Club be transferred to the parish for the benefit of all parishioners; that Ken Grainger be appointed to transfer all assets of St Mary’s Social Club to the parish.”

To download the Zoom meeting app and join the meeting visit https://zoom.us/join

    This week’s recommendation

The lockdowns and isolation associated with the Coronavirus pandemic are highlighting an increasing trend in anxiety, loneliness and depression especially among young people. Some have reported the tendency to have suicidal thoughts as we seem to lose hope in the future. In the audio talk ’13 Reasons Why You Matter’, Catholic speaker Noelle Garcia talks about the problem of self-worth and suicide in today’s world and gives 13 very good reasons on Why You Matter!

The talk was originally given to people who work with young people in the Catholic sphere. But the comments on FORMED indicate that people of all ages have found the talk helpful in this Covid-19 time. If you know someone who is struggling this is particularly useful.
