From The VicarageDear Friends,We are coming to the me of Celebra on and Gi s. In our Churches we will be concentra ng on Listening, Wai ng, Watching and Welcoming as we approach the darkest me, in ever-deepening expecta on of the Light. Some mes gi s come with great value, the giver leaving the price tag on so that you know just how much it cost. Some mes gi s are materially worthless, but dripping with love and signifi cance, and we treasure them for their associa on and memory and cherish them for life. The handmade gi s of children speak to us here.I have received an early present this year in the form of Neil McGregor’s short minute refl ec ons each week day on Radio at . am repeated at . pm. The series of programmes is called ‘Living with the Gods’ and is the most intelligent and marvellous unfolding of meaning. It features each me a theme illustrated from the vast collec ons of objects in the Bri sh Museum, which is revealed as a sort of memory box of human kind.Neil McGregor’s thesis is that religions should not be thought of as various compe ng sets of doctrines and beliefs, but as communal celebra ons of value, worth and meaning. It is about how we relate to each other, our environment, to life and existence, and it is expressed through communal ac ons and celebra ons which drama cally enact these meanings. Each day he takes his listeners on a journey around the world and through history,

and brings us safely back minutes later enriched, educated, blessed and full of wonder. I cannot recommend this programme too highly, and it is all available for free on the BBC iplayer for a year. Go on… unwrap it with me!

Cerne Abbas SurgeryAPPOINMENTS  )

As we hurtle once again towards Christmas,we refl ect on the past year and look forward to the next. We have welcomed Amanda as a new Healthcare Assistant, and she has quickly become a valuable member of the nursing team. You will see her both in the surgery and in the community, especially on Wednesday mornings in Hazelbury Bryan. The dispensary is becoming ever busier and the small space we have seems to be ge ng even smaller! We are hoping to appoint another qualifi ed dispenser soon to support the team, but they seem to be a rare breed, so me will tell. The recep on and offi ce team are the unsung heroes: they are the fi rst to speak to or greet pa ents and never know what the next ques on will be. It is important to remember that in any team we all need to appreciate what our colleagues do to allow us to do our own job.We con nue to be impacted by changing our clinical system which is s ll bedding in. Our pa ents have been suppor ve during this changeover, generally understanding that things are s ll taking a li le longer as we all get used to how it works. Despite the challenges that has brought, the team at the surgery has con nued to provide a high quality, caring service to our pa ents: it is a hardworking and caring team. Many thanks for feedback, verbal and wri en, that we receive at the surgery, we all appreciate pa ents, families and carers making the eff ort to contact us.A reminder that we will be closed over Christmas and New Year on Monday th and Tuesday th December and Monday st January. Remember that you should call if you need advice during closures or in the case of an emergency. Finally we would like to wish you a happy Christmas and a healthy .

The campaign aims to educate people about social care and encourage them to make provisions and plans for their future care needs. Dorset County Council’s Cabinet member for Health and Care Jill Haynes said: “Prepare to live be er is all about encouraging people to stay ac ve and keep as independent as possible. We naturally become more independent as we progress through life. But as we get older, it is even more important to stay independent. When it comes to adult social care we want to help people stay in their own home for longer. By thinking about the future and preparing for the costs of care, you can have more choice and control over the care you want.” % of people aged

to have no plans for how they will pay for their care. One of the hardest things is knowing when to talk about care, but it’s never too early to have those conversa ons with family and friends.Council staff will be visi ng towns across the county and talking to people about planning for their future. You can fi nd out more about living be er at dorse oryou.gov.uk/livebe er
