Newsleer 2017 March 23 - Week 8, Term 1 What is the Relief Program at Marrara Christian College? “Relief” is a program which gives our boarding students the opportunity to engage in activities with other students from different houses. During this time the house parents are relieved of their house parent duties. This allows the house parents the opportunity to spend quality time with their own family. Our Relief Program is run by a dedicated team with a heart for our indigenous boarders. Our aim is to see them engage in new activities and try things that may be out of their comfort zone. This term we have done activities such as dodge ball, football, water fights and water slides, soccer, dancing, spot light, computer games as well as many creative activities such as painting, pavement drawings, and bracelet making. God is working in the lives of our boarders and many are asking and talking about God and exploring who he is. Above all, our desire is to see each and every boarder grasp everything God has for them. Our quote for the Term: “God is love so we must be motivated by love.” - Bruce Clow Mr Kyle Cantrill - Relief Coordinator Our “Relief” Program

For those of us who teach a Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (Year 11 and 12) subject we know that one of the Performance Standards our students need to achieve is knowledge and understanding in the subject. As we read through the different levels of knowledge and understanding it becomes clear that a C grade represents knowledge and an A grade represents good understanding.

So what is the difference between knowledge and understanding?

Knowledge is defined as: facts, information and skills acquired through experience or education.Understanding is defined as: the power of comprehending and the ability to make experience intelligible by applying concepts and categories. Understanding takes our knowledge further so that we are able to apply and fully comprehend facts and ideas.

The Bible has a lot to say about knowledge and understanding:

“..knowledge puffs up while love builds up” 1 Corinthians 8:1 (NIV)

“Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.” Proverbs 9:10 (NLT)

“The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.” Proverbs 18:15 (NIV)

“The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” Psalm 119:130 (NIV)

“Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions.” Proverbs 18:2 (NIV)

As I explore these concepts and seek to teach my students to know AND understand I can see that I cannot help them understand fully without bringing God into the story. As Creator of the Universe, He permeates everything, there is nothing apart from Him. This means that as I teach my students Maths, English, Science, Geography, History etc, I need to focus on God’s perspective of the content.

As I seek to help my students to understand, I need to encourage them to think critically and evaluate all they learn. I need to encourage them to question so that they can achieve well in school as well as be useful citizens.

Understanding is a lens which brings the facts into crisp focus and produces principles. To achieve an ‘A’ in life there is a need to think critically, seek wisdom and look for God in all things.

As Charles Spurgeon said, “Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom.”

To be people who fully know and understand, it is necessary to follow the commandment of Jesus:

“Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’” Matthew 22:37-38 (NIV)

I continue to be amazed by this community that encourages students to learn for authentic knowledge and understanding – I am blessed to be a part of it.

Introducing Our College Prefects

Hey guys! My name is Alesha West and I am one of the 2017 Prefects.

I’m currently in Year 11 and have been attending MCC since Preschool. I was born and raised in Darwin and for the past 2 years I have been living on campus at school.

For most of my life I have always had 10 extra brothers because my family have been a part of the House Parenting program here at Marrara, caring for the indigenous boarders that attend during the schooling terms.

Throughout my schooling years at Marrara, I have always looked up to the Prefects and aspired to be a part of their service in the College community.

I am very excited to see God’s plan for this year unravel through the service and love the Prefect team have to offer and I am so grateful to be a part of it.

Meet Alesha...

Our 2017 College MusicalMusical rehearsals are well underway and the students are enjoying giving life to the production. In 2017 Marrara Christian College brings you a new look at an old classic. This year’s musical, “A Lion, the Switch and the What?”, is written and developed by the students and presents a wide range of musical numbers with something for everyone to enjoy. There are battle scenes, dances and plenty of teenage antics as the students commandeer Bible study class and bring a few new perspectives to a great story.

Mark your calendars now for May 5! Only one performance to enjoy so don’t miss out! Scroll down for more info on our poster...

In 2016, a total of 47 students out of 47 potential completers successfully completed the NTCET, including 9 indigenous students. This is the second successive year that a completion rate of 100% has been achieved.

9 students scored above 85, while 17 of the 32 students who achieved an ATAR scored above 75. This includes those students in the top 25% of students who received an ATAR around Australia!

Well done to all of the students and teachers for their hard work!

100% Completion Rate!

Introducing Our College Prefects

Hi my name is Leah. I’m one of the Year 11 Prefects and I feel really privileged to be a part of the College Prefect team. I’m excited about the things we’re planning for the year ahead!

I live in rural Darwin and I love it. In my spare time, I like horse riding, going to water falls, driving my paddock bomb and spending time with friends.

I hope, that as a team this year, we will be able to bless the College community.

Thanks and God Bless!

Meet Leah...
