Position sensors

Inductive sensorstake a leap forward

Inductive sensors

Precise position monitoring

Digital transmission of targetdistance

High linearity and repeatability

High IP 69K and wide temperature range

Function and polarity selectablevia IO-Link

Much more than just a pulse pick-up!ifm’s new inductive sensors with IO-Link incorporate several functions inone unit. They can be used as switching sensors with an adjustable switchpoint or measuring systems with a measured value transmitted via IO-Link.The output signal can be set to NC or NO and PNP or NPN allowing manypossible combinations. This keeps the number of different types down, reducing the cost of stock.

Highest precisionThe new sensors are so precise that they detect even minute changes. Eventhe true run of a spindle or the tension of a saw blade is reliably detected. An alarm can be set if the target leaves the detection zone or comes tooclose to the sensing face. All data acquired can be transmitted via IO-Linkand recorded. This new development is unbeatable.

Kplus sensors: one sensing rangefor all metals

Uniform sensing range for thereliable detection of all metals

Compact dimensions for use inthe smallest of space

Electromagnetic field immunesensor technology to preventincorrect switching

High-quality stainless steel housing

High reliability thanks to protection rating from IP 65 / IP 69K

Constant correction factorKplus sensors have the same sensing range for all types of metals. They are for example perfectly suited for the detection of aluminium, where conventional sensors show a considerably reduced sensing range. The high switching frequencies enable the monitoring of fast changingswitching states. The resistant stainless steel sleeve allows reliable use in oil and coolant applications. The wide temperature range as well as the high protection ratings enable universal use of the new Kplus sensors.

Capacitive sensors

Unique visualisation and handling concept via LED display

See and compensate switchpoint movement

IP 69K gives high ingress resistance

PNP/ NPN, NO/ NC, timerfunction

For medium temperatures up to 110 °C

Visualised switch pointThe new capacitive sensors stand out not only because of their excellenttechnical data but most of all with their new and unique visualisation concept. Using a 12-LED bar display of the PerformanceLine the user canalways adapt the switch point to suit the application conditions – it is always in the centre of the display. The green LEDs either side of the switchpoint indicate the reliability of the switch point. Deposits, material changesetc. are displayed directly on the sensor and the user can readjust theswitch point precisely as needed. An imminent error can be detected ingood time and avoided thus minimising the risk of failures or deactivation. If help is needed with the effects of process changes this is much easier to explain and rectify with the LED display. Over the phone the user candescribe the LED behaviour and a support engineer can easily advise corrective measures.

Standard M12 housing with ingress-resistant cable entry

Short housing (40 mm) forextremely low-profile cylinders

Function principleThe new MFH series sensor is suited for flush mounting in various steels. With its 1.8 mm sensing range it shows reliable switching characteristics. The new operating principle of this unit is based on a magnetic-inductivetechnology that detects only ferromagnetic metals (e.g. steel). It is sealedby means of an O-ring and a supporting ring towards the pressure area.

Applications Besides use in hydraulic cylinders, the sensor is also ideal for other hydrauliccomponents such as valves or pumps. MFH operates reliably for the lifetimeof the cylinder. Furthermore, it is used in mechanical engineering processes,e.g. in plastic injection-moulding or process industry applications. Its attractive price means the sensor can also be considered for simplecomponents where this option used to be too expensive.

Position sensors

Precise object detectionunder extreme conditionsUltrasonic sensors

Robust high-grade stainlesssteel housing for demandingapplications

Sensing range up to 1.2 m inM18 cube design and 2.2 m in M18 design

The vibrating sound transducerreduces the deposit of dirt

Retro-reflective operation fororientation-independent objectdetection

Easy setting via teach button, wire teach or IO-Link

The alternative for difficult surfacesUltrasonic sensors transmit and receive sound waves in the ultrasonicrange. The object to be detected reflects the sound waves and the distanceinformation is determined via time of flight measurement. As opposed tophotoelectric sensors, colour, transparency or the object’s surface shine donot play a role. Blister packages in packaging technology or transparentplastic bowls in the food industry, for example, can be reliably detected.

High performanceThe ifm ultrasonic sensors in M18 design provide a particularly small blindzone and long sensing ranges which are usually only achieved by sensors ofa considerably larger design. The sensors operate reliably with heavy soiling so that they can be used inapplications in which photoelectric sensors meet their limits.

Position sensors

Object detectionfor long ranges anddifficult surfaces

Ultrasonic sensors

M18 plastic housing available in the two lengths 60 mm and98 mm

Long ranges from 300 mm to2200 mm available

The vibrating sound transducerreduces the deposit of dirt

Digital and analogue output for point level measurement and distance detection

Easy setting via teach button, wire teach or IO-Link

The alternative for difficult surfacesUltrasonic sensors transmit and receive sound waves in the ultrasonicrange. The object to be detected reflects the sound waves and the distanceinformation is determined via time of flight measurement. As opposed tophotoelectric sensors colour, transparency or the object’s surface shine donot play a role. Blister packages in packaging technology or transparentplastic bowls in the food industry, for example, can be reliably detected.

High performanceThe ifm ultrasonic sensors in M18 design provide a particularly small blindzone and long sensing ranges which are usually only achieved by sensors of a considerably larger design. The sensors operate reliably with heavy soiling so that they can be used inapplications in which photoelectric sensors meet their limits.

Position sensors

This tiny new photocell O8 is thenext big thing!

Infrared sensors / red light sensors

Extremely reliable background suppression

Range up to 80 mm independent of the colour

Precise detection of very small components

Reliable detection of dark orshiny surfaces

IO-Link for remote setting

Photoelectric miniature sensor with maximum precisionThe new powerful O8 sensor is an optimum choice for applications wherespace is at a premium such as assembly and robotics. It might be small, butthe sensor achieves a range of 80 mm independent of colour and finish of the surface to be detected. Moreover the background suppression is extremely reliable and precise even for the detection of very small, flat orreflective objects. The O8 reliably copes even with constantly changingbackgrounds, e.g. on robot arms.

Reliable and efficient thanks to IO-LinkVia IO-Link the ranges can be set to the nearest millimetre. A complex adjustment of the distance from the sensor to the object is not needed. The new sensors are also available with preset ranges. With their reliabilityand precision they are much above the average of conventional devices.

ApplicationsEspecially in the field of conveying technology the compact speed sensors can be used for various applica-tions, for example for monitoring belt conveyors orbucket elevators. Here they are typically used to monitor underspeed, blockage or standstill.

AdvantagesThe speed sensors incorporate the complete speed monitoring because the evaluation electronics and thesensor are integrated in one housing. The switch pointis set using a multi-turn potentiometer. Hysteresis andstart-up delay are firmly set.

OperationThe integrated sensor is damped by passing cams orother metallic targets. On the basis of the time intervalbetween damping the evaluation unit determines theperiod duration or the frequency (actual rotationalspeed value) and compares it to the set switch point(preset value). The output is switched during the start-up delay andwhen the rotational speed exceeds the set switchingvalue. An LED signals underspeed and switch-off of the output.

Conversion of analogue measured values to an IO-Linkcommunication

Analogue signals at a glanceThe compact connector unit is simply inserted in the connection cable ofanalogue sensors (4...20 mA). It displays the measured values locally. Theuser can set a switch point or limit at which the transistor output switches.A colour change (red /green) of the display indicates this unmistakably. Critical process states or operational problems are reliably signalled.

Converter for Industry 4.0A special feature is the signal conversion: The threshold display convertsanalogue signals to digital IO-Link signals. Today they are required in almostany modern industrial environment and for Industry 4.0 applications.

Photoelectric 3Dlevel measurementand point level detection3D sensors

Continuous measurement ofuneven surfaces

Determines min, max or meanvalues

Teaching of different tank shapes

Interfering structures are suppressed

Non-contact detection of opaque media for levels of up to 10 m

Flexible configurationThe system detects solid, opaque solids and bulk materials in tanks, silos orhoppers with levels of up to 10 m. The O3D reliably detects the load heightin machinery for mechanical handling, e.g. belts, and the loading of pallets. The sensor determines the level via a defined background and transmits theprocess value via analogue output or digitally and noise immune via theEthernet process interface. Alternatively, the O3D may be used as a pointlevel switch. The measuring segment of the sensor can be adapted to the shape of therespective tank. Agitators and other attachments can be suppressed via“exclusion regions”. Various container shapes, such as hoppers, silos oreven inclined belts can be recognised by the sensor. This means that for bulk materials the average level is indicated, even ifthere are conical heaps or funnelling.

High-grade stainless steel submersible pressure transmitter with PUR or FEP cable for high resistance to media

Version with ATEX approval for group I cat. M1 and group IIcat. 1G and 1D.

Good overall accuracy and long-term stability

Pressure compensation via internally vented cable

Application areasThe PS series submersible pressure transmitters are used for level measurement in containers, tanks, wells, flowing water, bore holes and wastewater plants. The accuracy of 0.5 % and the long-term stability of0.2 % per year contribute to the reliable operation of the transmitter.

Robust, reliable and flexibleAll submersible pressure transmitters have a robust high-grade stainlesssteel housing. For standard applications the favourably priced PUR cablecan be used. For applications where a high resistance to media is requested(e.g. slurry, oils or fuels) the FEP cable is available. The ATEX submersible pressure transmitters of the PS3xxA series are designed for level measurement in areas subject to explosion. The sensorscan be used in zone 0, 1, 2 or zone 20, 21, 22 as well as in mining. The GL approval allows an application in the maritime sector.

Robust stainless steel measuring cell

Slim, compact design with G 1/4 process connection

Easy connection via M12 connector

Absolute pressure sensorsAs of now, ifm has added absolute pressure sensors to its versatile portfolioin the pressure sensor range. The new PT05 series with robust metal measuring cell, G 1/4 process connection, M12 connector and analogueoutput is available in the common pressure ranges up to 10 bar.

Operating principleAbsolute pressure sensors operate independently of the surrounding airpressure; that is what distinguishes them from sensors working on a relative measurement principle. The measurement is not influenced by weather-and altitude-related fluctuations of air pressure. This is often a decisive factor in vacuum applications, which require a fine pressure control.Absolute pressure sensors do not require ventilation, therefore incorrectmeasurement due to a blocked exhaust is impossible. In the field of pressure sensors the new units stand out as specialists for”specific duties“.

Measurement techniqueThe SA volumetric flow sensor operates using the calorimetric measuringprinciple. Measuring elements as well as a heat source are located on themeasuring tip. The physical effect that a flowing medium absorbs heatenergy and conducts it away is used. The resulting temperature change isan indication of flow.

Device functionThe new SA-type sensor has been designed to detect and measure flowand temperature even in large internal pipe diameters up to 400 mm.A serial number on the device enables unambiguous traceability. Therefore it serves different applications. Switching outputs, analogue signals and IO-Link provide various options to further process the signals. That means that the user is best-equipped for Industry 4.0.

Measuring range -50...150 °C

IO-Link for simple, remote setting

Extremely high accuracy of +/- 0.3 K

Tamper-proof

Flexible in useThe functionality of the temperature sensor TV is impressive. Due to its extremely compact design the TV sensor can be installed where space is ata premium. The device has two switch points, operates with an extremelyhigh precision and can be set easily and quickly via the LINERECORDERSENSOR.

Efficient and reliable thanks to IO-LinkThanks to IO-Link the new temperature sensor continuously transmits process values and other important data, e.g. min. / max. temperature. Moreover, the digital measurement results are more accurate because thereare no conversion losses by D/A converters or external influences (e.g. cablelengths). Devices with preset measuring ranges (analogue start and endpoints) are no longer needed because the real process value is transmitted. This reduces stock. Soon conventional transmitters will be a thing of the past.

Convenient and reliable settingThe TK type temperature sensors are sensors to monitor liquids and gaseswith switch points that can be set intuitively via two radial setting rings.Wherever simple solutions are needed, the TK series sensors are a real alternative. Complicated parameter setting via software is not necessary. The requested temperature is set via the setting rings allowing optimumread-out without your installation having to be in operation. In addition, the switching states are clearly displayed via LEDs.

VersionsThe sensors are available with a setpoint and a reset point (TK6xxx) or two switch points with a fixed hysteresis (TK7xxx). The TK series temperature sensors are always the optimum choice for quick and simple use.

Visualisation of the switchingstates by clearly visible LEDs

Extremely fast, robust and flexibleThe compact TN type temperature sensors are distinguished by excellent response times, high pressure resistance and integrated process connections. The sensors easily resist applications with temperatures up to 150 °C andhigh pressure loads up to 400 bar. The measuring range is freely scalable.

Updating a classicWhat is new is the quick and easy handling via three pushbuttons. The display can be switched from the indication of ”red“ to an alternatingindication of “red - green“. So, switching states can be highlighted or an independent colour windowcan be created. The sensor head can be rotated and offers optimum readability from any position. Thanks to captive laser labelling on the stainless steel housing, the units can still be identified after years.

Type Description

Safe PLCCertified up to SIL3, PL e. Eight safe local inputs andfour safe local outputs. Convenient diagnostic functions, include status indication for safe I/Os and error memorywith time stamp for up to 2,000 messages.Programming is done via CODESYS V3. The auto-teachfunction simplifies the replacement of slaves.

Standard PLCThe PLC can be freely programmed using CODESYS V3.Its software and hardware operates independently ofthe fail-safe PLC, but it can of course communicatewith it and exchange data. The PLC has access to all interfaces of the system.

AS-i gatewayWithout programming, the SmartPLC can be used directly as a gateway for AS-i on the one side, and Profinet, Profibus, or EtherNet/IP on the other side. Theintegrated display and the convenient web interfacedisplay all the available status information for the userand support diagnostics in case of a fault.

Data loggerOperational system data can be recorded via AS-i, Modbus TCP, Profinet, EtherNet/IP, Profibus, TCP/IP,UDP/IP and stored on the SD card or in the internalflash memory. If needed, the integrated real-time clock provides atime stamp for each recorded data block. This simplifiesthe documentation and diagnostics of processes.

Visualisation systemA freely programmable web visualisation based onHTML5 provides maximum transparency. An internetbrowser with HTML5 capability is sufficient on the finalunit (PC, tablet, smartphone). No further software is required. Even the full graphic display of the SmartPLCis freely programmable for visualisation tasks.

Protocol converterConnect your sensors and Ethernet based devices toyour fieldbus: The SmartPLC can be used as protocolconverter between Profinet, Profibus, EtherNet/IP onthe one side and AS-i, Modbus TCP, TCP/IP, UDP/IP onthe other side.

All-in-oneThe new SmartPLC combines two separate PLCs in one compact housing. While the one PLC solves safety-related applications, the second PLC either works as astandard PLC or as platform for other tasks. Both PLCs communicate with each other, so that entireplant controls can be implemented including safetyfunctions and visualisations with only one SmartPLC.

Robust field bus modules with safe connectionifm’s new IO-Link masters are the perfect choice, even for the most difficultenvironments: the materials and production methods are identical to theifm jumper cables of the tried-and-tested EVC product series. The ecolinktechnology guarantees reliable, permanently ingress-resistant M12 connec-tions of the connection cables.

Energy limitation for UL class 2 unitsMany sensors require an energy-limited supply with UL class 2 approval. The limitation of energy is usually achieved via a corresponding power supply. With the AL1100 IO-Link master, sensors can be supplied accordingto UL class 2 without using an energy-limited power supply approved according to UL class 2.

Advantages and customer benefits

• Configuration of sensors with LR DEVICE

The intuitive software finds all IO-Link masters in theEthernet network and creates an overview of thewhole plant. Besides, all sensors connected are in-dicated with the respective parameters. This meansthat parameter setting of all sensors in the system ispossible from one central point.

• Easy sensor connectionThe sensors and actuators are connected via standardM12 connection cables without screening. Up to 4 IO-Link sensors can be connected and be suppliedwith up to 3.6 A. With the EVC693 accessories, additional auxiliary supply for the connection of IO-Link actuators can be supplied. The cable can be up to 20 m long.

• Reliable digital dataThe sensor data is transferred digitally. Unlike analoguesignals, contact resistance and EMC interference cannot corrupt the signals.

• Direct connection to the ITThe integrated LR AGENT EMBEDDED is capable of transmitting the process values directly to ERP systems, without detour via the PLC. This second communication path is available in parallelto PROFINET via the bus wiring.

ApplicationMobile machines are becoming ever more complex and complicated to use. Individual components assumemore and more tasks. With ifm's RFID system handling can be simplified and errors can be avoided: individual components orattachments are identified by means of an RFID tag andthe corresponding set-up is set automatically in thecontroller.Set-up times are minimised. Automatic identificationsimplifies the creation of user-specific system set-ups.Wrongly set process parameters are a thing of the past.

Higher productivityInformation on maintenance intervals and operatingtimes can automatically be generated and stored sincethe controller detects when and how long a specificmachine set-up runs. This increases productivity.

Perfectly suited for use in industrial applicationsThe RFID system is also suitable for industrial applications in which CANopen controllers are used. In this environment the DTM4xx RFID identification system is ideal thanks to its excellent price / performance ratio.

Predefined CODESYS functionblocks for easy integration

Robust design for mobile applications

Real-time measurement for mobile machinesThe exact system time is an important function for many mobile applications. While in large and complex machines this task is often fulfilled by the central display, up to now, there was no affordable solution for mobile applicationswhen it came to small and compact machines. In its compact automotive relay housing, the CANrtc real-time clock canoffer this functionality. Its parameters can be set via the CAN bus while itprovides the current time and date. Via an integrated alarm output, it ispossible to execute functions such as starting the machine controller. For the CANrtc, a software library of the CODESYS software is availablethat is compatible with IEC61131-3. This makes it particularly easy to quickly implement the application software.

Functions and advantagesThe compact real-time clock is an ideal add-on both for control systems in small and compact machines andcomplex process controllers of big machines.

• Mechanical designThe compact housing of the electronics is equippedwith an ISO 7588 blade arrangement providing allnecessary connections. These are easy to handle and available all over theworld. The CANrtc can also be used in areas that are exposed to splashing water due to an increasedprotection rating if installed in connection with theBasicRelay CR0421 and the corresponding modulecover.

• Powerful electronicsThe electronics are optimally adapted to the applica-tion. The integrated buffer battery reliably bridgesany supply voltage interruptions. At a freely adjustable point of time, the alarm output activates a connectedconsumer or the system electronics.

• Programmable to IEC 61131-3The CODESYS software enables a clear and easy creation of the application software for the user. Forthe CANrtc real-time clock, a library with the necessary functions for parameter setting and communication is available. The parameters can be set and read via the user program. The RTC data is also available to other busparticipants via the open CANinterface.

Functions and featuresCANwireless enables a wireless connection to the CAN bus in a vehicle or machine. With the two basicoperating modes “Infrastructure” and “Mini AccessPoint”, the module is able to create a connection in different ways.

• Operating mode “wifi Infrastructure”In the operating mode “Infrastructure”, a CANwirelessis configured to connect to an existing wifi infrastruc-ture. When connected to the network, the device canconnect automatically to another network participant(client) or listen to incoming connection requests (server). CAN bus data can be exchanged with other connectednetwork participants.

• Operating mode “wifi Mini Access Point”A CANwireless configured as mini wifi access pointwill create its own wifi network to which multipleother devices, e.g. other CANwireless devices, PCs,smartphones or tablets, can connect. As in the operating mode “Infrastructure”, the devicecan act as both client or server in its own network.Data on the CAN bus of the mini AP device will beshared with the other connected network participants.

• CAN to CAN bridgeThe operating modes “wifi Infrastructure”, “wifi MiniAccess Point” or “Bluetooth” also support a wirelessCAN bus bridge between several CANwireless devices.

• Wireless diagnoses and debuggingTools like CODESYS V2.3 and the maintenance toolallow the use of CANwireless as interface to the machine.

• CAN to wifi / Bluetooth filterIf required, CANwireless devices can filter data to betransferred by radio. This reduces the data load andincreases the operational reliability.

Small design – maximum protectionIn particular where space is at a premium, e.g. in robotics, handling and assembly technology, most applications require special solutions. Here the new, lean and flat M8 splitter with the tried-and-tested safe ecolink technology is a convincing solution. Only high-quality materials, safe production processes and fault-free installation ensure high machine uptime in the long run.

ecolink technologyThe new ecolink technology prevents incorrect mounting. An integratedmechanical end stop protects the O-ring from destruction. So, rapid andsecure installation is possible without an expensive torque wrench.

Functions and advantages

Power reserveThese power supplies provide an excellent power reserve of 50 percent for up to four seconds to copewith short current loads.

Inrush current limitationInstead of an inrush current limitation with a simpleNTC element, charging the capacitors of the new ifm switched-mode power supplies is microprocessor-controlled. This allows the selectivity of fuses protectingthe inputs on the primary side and saves wiring costs.

Long bridging timesThe voltage supply is ensured for several milliseconds ifthe mains voltage briefly fails, e.g. caused by switchingoperations in the supply network.

Wide operating temperature rangeifm switched-mode power supplies provide the specificnominal power across the entire temperature range.Derating only has to be taken into account above anoperating temperature of 60 °C.

Double terminalAll 24 V switched-mode power supplies are equippedwith double terminals. This simplifies wiring and provides more clarity in the control cabinet.

Circuit protectionwith monitoringfunction for the 24 Vsecondary circuitAccessories

Modular and selective protec-tion in plant and machinery

Reliable circuit protection allows reduction of wire cross-sections

Fast replacement using innova-tive connection technology

Detection of triggering cause (via IO-Link)

Current and voltage measurement in each channel(via IO-Link)

Safety on the 24 V sideAs opposed to the 230 V primary side, the circuit protection in the secondary circuit is often neglected. Another issue is that in the event of afailure of the 24 V DC voltage supply standard mechanical circuit breakersoften do not trigger. This may happen with long cables, for example. The electronic circuit breakers from ifm monitor the circuit ideally and, if required, disconnect reliably. Individual branch circuits can be selectivelydisconnected. This allows a reduction of wire cross-sections in the load circuit of the switched-mode power supplies. The system has a modularstructure and can be ideally adapted to the circuits of plant and machinery. The IO-Link version also allows evaluation of important diagnostic data.

Modular installationThe system has a modular structure and consists of asupply module to feed max. 40 A. The protection modules can be mounted side by side. This is done viaa simple clip mechanism, completely without anybridges, jumpers or the like.Easy mounting and minimised wiring complexity savecost and time. With the standard version the user canconnect up to 10 and with the IO-Link version up to 8 safety modules to the head module.

VersionsThere is a standard and an IO-Link version. In additionto the triggering mechanism, the modules feature anLED for signalling if the module has triggered, if it is active and to what extent it is utilised. By means of a pushbutton each channel can be activated, deactivated or set. The feed module has an additional collective output toprovide a warning signal if a module has triggered.

More transparency with IO-LinkThe IO-Link version has the same function; there is, however, additional information about each channel:Transfer to the IO-Link master:• effective nominal current (1 byte cyclical)• output voltage (acyclical) • triggering counter (acyclical)• current unit status (1 byte cyclical): – short circuit – overload – undervoltage – limit reached (80 % IN)Transfer from the IO-Link master: • activation/deactivation • reset with triggering • reset triggering counter

The modules are available in the fixed sizes 2 A, 4 A, 6 A, 8 A and 10 A. The fixed current values preventsubsequent misuse by changing the max. current value.
