Semantics, of course, are important in putting scientific work across to the general public. Noteworthy confusions corne up now and then, and a recent ACS meeting provides a fine example.
T h e incident turns upon the word "joxile." Some rhyme this word with "pool," and others rhyme it with "owl." Which is correct is neither here nor there, but the speaker in question was an "owl" man. He was talking about rubber technology to a largely nontechnical audience.
T h e speaker explained at one point that when work is done on natural rubber, it gives off heat. Then, in deference to the listening laymen, he pantomimed holding a piece of rubber against his cheek and said, "You can feel the heat— this is the joule effect/'
This was perhaps an unintentional pun, but then they are the best kind. And it seemed likely that at least a few nontechnical listeners went away convinced that the cheek (jowl) is a standard temperature indicator among ruh>ber scientists.
He's Hardly Ever Sick at Sea!" AVhen Winston Churchill returned to
the British Admiralty as First Lord just prior to World War II , shore and surface units of the Fleet throughout the world received by radio the brief, electric message: "Winston is back!"
The good ship ACS can now boast an analogy. "Harry has made Admiral!"
President Harry Fisher was recently commissioned Admiral in the Nebraska NiAvy by Mayor John Rosenblatt of Omaha. Fisher received the honor at a luncheon given by the Omaha Chamber of Commerce in connection with the 16th Midwest Regional Meeting. THe mayor explained later that Nebraska's Navy has but one rank—Admiral. Seems a sensible way to run a navy.
Deft Definition An engineer is a person who passes
as an exacting expert on the basis of being able to turn out infinite strings of incomprehensible formulae calculated with micrometric precision from vague assumptions which are based on debatable figures taken from inconclusive experiments carried out with instruments of problematical accuracy by persons of doubtful reliability and questionable mentality for the avowed purpose of annoying and confounding a hopeless and chimerical group of fanatics referred to, all too frequently, as engineers. —Cleneral Motors Engineering journal
THERMAL STABILITY
CEL1TE preformed Catalyst Carriers
Celite* Preformed Catalyst Carriers combine high absorption, high porosity, high strength, low density and large surface area in a microporous ceramic type support—and are resistant to the action of phosphoric acid in the presence of steam at elevated temperatures. They are particularly suited for such processes as hydrogénation, polymerization, oxidation, isomerization, hydration . . . or wherever the use of silica is indicated.
Celite 408 and Celite 410 Preformed Catalyst Carriers are available in many different sizes and shapes and similar compositions can be produced in granular form. For full details and prices write D PÏW Johns -Manv i l l e , Box 60 , N e w 3 # Λ | York 16, Ν. Y. *ReK. u.s. rat. oa. ·«.-··«*.
