Drainage issue causes concern Yorkton’s mayor is behind a provincial initia- tive to seek answers in solving an agriculture drainage issue affecting the province. Water management and water quality issues are at the forefront for many in Saskatchewan these days and that’s why the Government of Saskatchewan says it has announced an online public consultation forum on the topic. “Our research has shown that wetland drainage increases annual flows in an average prairie water- shed by 62 per cent,” says Brian Hepworth, Saskatchewan Manager of Provincial Operations for Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). “Wetland drainage also increases downstream nutrient loading into our rivers and lakes, which contributes to algae blooms, and releases significant amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere nullifying the benefits of many publicly funded cli- mate change initiatives.” When we allow wetlands to be drained we also lose important habitat for bio- diversity, ground water recharge potential, ecotour- ism opportunities, as well as flood, drought and ero- sion control adds Hepworth. Yorkton Mayor Bob Maloney says he shares DUC’s concern and is hop- ing the forum will hear input from producers and urban residents as well. “What we are learning is that wetlands play an important role in protect- ing our communities’ water supplies, recreation oppor- tunities, and infrastructure such as roads and storm water systems,” says Maloney. “These are issues that affect our taxes, our health, and our quality of life.” Both Hepworth and Maloney believe the Province’s public forum to seek input on wetlands is very timely, and they stress this is your chance to make sure that your voice and your support for wetlands are heard. “Every day we allow wet- lands to be lost, we signifi- cantly harm our environ- ment. Wetland loss is an important issue to all Saskatchewan residents and our government needs to hear from you. Fifteen per cent of people with bipolar dis-order die by suicide! Think of their suffering and that of their loved ones! Mental health affects us all! Frequent digestive complaints, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, may point to psychiatric disorders. One study published showed that 90 per cent of the patients who repeatedly sought treat-ment for digestive tract symptoms had at least one current psychiatric diagnosis and 48% had at least two. Good diges-tion is always important, regardless of the pre-senting health problem! Classic symptoms of bipolar disorder include crippling lows of depres-sion, with weeks spent on the couch, in pyja-mas, for instance. Manic highs can produce vio-lent, angry outbursts, with volatile, heightened moods and possible ambitious manifesta-tions such as overwork-ing or overspending.

NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES

Nutr ient -dep leted soils are producing nutrient-depleted foods. For example, one study showed only 50 per cent of the calcium in brocco-

li, compared to the amount it contained 36 years earlier. Similarly, there was 40 per cent less magnesium in apples, compared in the same years. In 2002, data from the USDA showed percent-ages of the U.S. popula-tion that did NOT meet the Dietary Reference Intakes for specific nutrients: calcium, 72.9%; magnesium, 68%; phosphorus, 21.7%; sele-nium, 14.8%; copper, 30.7%; zinc, 42%; iron, 34.3%; Vitamin A, 54.7%; riboflavin, 21.8%; thiamin, 28.3%; folate, 75.1%; Vitamin B6, 35.3%; Vitamin B12, 29.9% and Vitamin C, 48.3%. A whopping 85.9% of the population was deficient in Vitamin E! I suspect that nutri-ent levels in Canadians are just as deficient. Our eating habits are simi-lar. A good portion of our food supply comes from the U.S., too. Can you imagine how much worse these nutrient levels would be now, a decade, later?

SOLVING THE MYSTERY

Nutrients in the human body can be understood when you think of a dam. All the

water behind the dam represents our bodies, including all the nutri-ents we need. However, if you could superimpose the chart of nutritional deficiencies over the dam, you would immedi-ately be alarmed at the vast weaknesses in the dam, causing major dev-astating leaks. The func-tional level of the dam would decrease to the biggest deficiency – in this case, Vitamin E. You could supplement with Vitamin E, but it is not until you fix the entire dam, that you really marvel at the wonders nutritional therapy can do for your health – your mental and emotional health included!

REDEFINING MENTAL ILLNESS

Even back in1990, a study showed that 17 trace elements were decreased in schizo-phrenics, compared to a normal control group. In 1994, another study showed that serum zinc levels were significantly decreased in people with depression. Current and ongoing research continues to find that some forms of mental illness may be nothing more than nutri-tional deficiencies – treatable, and, better yet, preventable with proper nutrient supple-mentation! Dr. Bonnie Kaplan, PhD, from the University

of Calgary, has been involved in studies involving nutritional supplementation for people with bipolar dis-order. She observed that 80 per cent of patients saw significant improve-ment in their overall symptoms! She said, “The normalization of the mentally ill via nutrient supplementa-tion has the potential to be the most significant breakthrough in the field of mental health since the beginning of time.” Our bodies require food to manufacture the proper neurological chemistry. Every pro-cess in the body, at one point or another, has a vitamin or mineral as its base. Let’s feed our starving brains! Call 306-783-1261 to make an appointment with Dr. Gail for your personal health assess-ment.

“If you only do one thing for the environment in your lifetime, speak out and help conserve Saskatchewan’s wetlands. Wetlands provide many benefits to us all, but unfortunately more of these important ecosystems are lost every day,” says Hepworth. You can help to save wetlands and create a new agricultural drainage policy for the province by signing up for the consultation forum now. CARD OF THANKS

ON AUGUST 10 & 11th a tremen- dous time was had by over 450 people. The Parade was unbe- lievable. Witnessing August Fens- ke accept his award from the Lieu- tenant Governor right in Jedburgh was a thrill. The Church service was a thoughtful addition. The food and the dance was first class as always. Best fireworks we have ever seen and I understand the pancake breakfast was a nice end to a beautiful sunny weekend. Congratulations to the organizers and the RM Council. It was a homecoming for some, a family re- union for others, a chance to see neighbours and renew old ac- quaintances - a gift to everyone. Thank you. Cheryl (Denesyk) De- nesowych.

Comments 15 years later:“The best thing about our win-dows is that they look good inside and out, windows stay clear in the coldest days of win-ter. What gives us the most sat-isfaction is that we have no more drafts and no steam on inside. Money well invested – saves on heat, cooler in the summer.”
