CRAFTING FOR CHRISTMAS – The Yorkton Public Library recently hosted a Christmas craft afternoon for area children, getting them into the spirit of the holidays by making different sea-sonal crafts.
– Sask. corporation formed Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart has an-nounced that livestock industry organizations have formed a new corporation to deliver livestock brand inspection services in the province. Livestock Services of Saskatch-ewan (LSS) Corp. is the new non-profi t corporation owned and operated by the fi ve main live-stock producer groups requiring inspection services. The groups governing LSS Corp. are the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s As-sociation, Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, Saskatch-ewan Cattle Feeders Associa-tion, Saskatchewan Horse Fed-eration and Livestock Marketers of Saskatchewan. The new LSS Corp. will work to provide more effi cient brand inspection in the province. “This is an important service and, as producers and industry are the primary users of brand inspection, it makes sense to transfer it to livestock organiza-tions,” says Stewart. Livestock brand inspection services, which ensure animals offered for sale are rightfully owned and verifi ed through a brand registry, have tradition-ally been provided in Saskatche-wan through Ministry of Agricul-ture livestock inspectors. This government role was unique; no other agricultural commodity purchased or sold in Saskatch-
ewan has a government service verifying ownership. Both Al-berta and British Columbia have industry delivered livestock brand inspection. Manitoba has no brand inspection. “The livestock industry in Sas-katchewan is a vital contributor to the economy and brand inspec-tion is an important safeguard to all producers,” Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association Chair Mark Elford adds. “Livestock Services of Saskatchewan Corp. will be carrying on this impor-tant function on a go-forward basis and our members are fully supportive of the new venture.” The Provincial Government will continue to be responsible for legislation governing live-stock inspection. The author-ity to carry out the duties of the legislation will be transferred to LSS Corp. on January 1, 2014. Ministry staff responsible for livestock inspection services will also move to the new organiza-tion. The Provincial Govern-ment will continue working with LSS Corp. to ensure a smooth transition. “I would like to thank livestock industry representatives for their hard work on the advisory committee,” Stewart concludes. “We are committed to working with LSS Corp. on this transfer and I am confi dent they will de-liver effective, effi cient brand in-spection in Saskatchewan.”

Ed, my neighbor next door, tends to be pretty relaxed about time. He has been five or ten min-utes late, for more than a few appointments. Ed considers that nothing really needs to start right, on time, unless it is a cer-emony where a person is being given a million dol-lar lottery cheque. “I took my own sweet time to be born, and there is no need to be in a rush in my life now,” Ed often says. Ruby, his wife, says that Ed comes from a family of slow movers. They are all slow doing anything except eating. Ed says that he is the most patient person that he knows. Ed says in his own words “I have a flexible mind and more common sense, than I need, and that is what makes me a patient per-son,” I asked Ed if his wife Ruby also sees him as a patient person. He said without hesitation. “Not on your life. She claims I’m impatient when driv-ing, impatient when shop-ping, and impatient about
anything that I don’t want to do, like visiting hospi-tals and nursing homes.” I guess it is a toss up as to whether Ed is patient or not. He says he is, and Ruby says he isn’t. I do think Ed is patient with himself that is he doesn’t criticize himself, a lot, or blame himself for what he might have done. It has been my experience that Ed has been real impa-tient towards preachers, politicians, bankers, every level of government and anyone who doesn’t agree with him. Mind you, this is not absolute fact, just what I have observed. I do know I’m not near-ly as patient as I would like to be. I do have my patient moments, but,
there are also times when I’m impatiently acting out in frustration. There is no law against being patient or any of the other char-acter traits that God wants us to develop as Christians. They are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-con-trol. In reality, each trait has a powerful alterna-tive; will it be love or hate; joy or grumpiness; patience or impatience; kindness or meanness, goodness or evil; faithful-ness or faithlessness; gen-tleness or aggression, self-control or no control. Not only do these traits come with negative oppo-
sites, we may do our best to limit how much love, patience, kindness etc. we are willing display. Sadly, many are not convinced that the world would be improved if, everyone, became more loving, more joyous, more peaceful, more patient. Are more goodness, more faithful-ness, more gentleness, and more self-control really needed? Hating, grumbling, fighting, act-ing in impatience, being bad, faithless, aggressive, and without any self-con-trol, often, suits folks as a better response to life. In 2014, will we add a more positive or a more negative flavor, to our own life and the lives of others? Most folks would prefer to be treated with love, rather than criti-cism. We need to treat others as we would like to be treated. The more we offer to others; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control; the more they will return them to us and make 2014 a good year for all.

Asessippi Ski Area & Resort has announced it has slid into its 15th season of snow fi lled fun. The ski season opened last Friday with 13 of 26 runs ready and more are expected to be open this weekend. “Opening is such a great time for us, staff, cottage owners and guests all coming back to start enjoying the winter season,” says Roz Pulo director of marketing. There are approxi-mately 200 residents now living, either part or full time, at the Cot-tage Cove development, which boosted estimated visitor numbers up to 1100 over the weekend. These numbers did not include the wedding guests at the Saturday wedding. “We had a lot of ex-citement here over the
weekend.” The annual fi rst com-petition of the season, ‘Get Amped,’ took place on Saturday, December 14. Twenty freestyle ski-ers and boarders from across Manitoba and Saskatchewan did not let the -25 temperatures slow them down. The Robin’s Run terrain park is looking great with
three new rails; a don-key tail, turbo tube and down-fl at turbo tube, plus a log bonk. The fi rst wedding of the new season also took place at Asessippi last Saturday. Asessippi has been catering to wed-dings for just over a year and offers a unique set-ting for couples wanting to create a memorable occasion. The resort also in-creased their number of runs by one this season, going from 25 to 26. The new run is located be-tween Easy Street and Crusin’, just below The Plunge. The name for the run is not yet offi cial but it has lots of snow and is open. Asessippi Ski Area & Resort is located just west of Inglis, near the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border.

The economy is hav-ing a negative impact on charitable organiza-tions. Imagine Canada’s recent Sector Monitor reported that 51% of charity leaders found economic conditions were translating into increased demand on resources and 50% were having difficulty fulfill-ing their missions. Just over a quarter said that their organiza-tion’s existence was at risk and those with annual revenues under
$149,999 are especially vulnerable. Fortunately, we are approaching the holiday season – an excellent time to raise funds. According to research compiled by Statistics Canada there are many reasons for philanthro-py: people have a rela-tionship with a particu-lar charity; they wish to create immortality by leaving a legacy; they want to feel good about themselves; they respond to social responsibility;
or they just appreciate the tax advantages. Charities should appeal to these reasons and focus attention on educating the public
about the benefits of reconsidering the way they give. Many Canadians donate ad hoc, tossing money into donation bins or writing
cheques to local charita-ble events. Instead, with some extra thought and planning, their generos-ity can be maximized to benefit both themselves and the charity. A basic method is to donate securities, and giving them directly to a charity is a tax efficient way of financing philan-thropy. The donor receives a charitable tax receipt for the full mar-ket value of the donated securities at closing on the day of the donation,
exempt from capital gains. Another simple way to extend generosity is to name a charity as the beneficiary of a regis-tered plan. On death, the balance of the regis-tered plan transfers directly to the charity and the estate receives a tax credit for the value on disposition. This can offset the tax on final income and effectively bypass probate.

There is added flexi-bility because the donor can change the benefi-ciary if circumstances change. Insurance can be used in a similar fash-ion with a charity named as beneficiary. When the donor passes, the charity receives the policy’s cash surrender value plus any net accumulated dividends and interest. The resulting tax credit can be applied to a final tax return. Some Canadians opt for a Donor Advised Fund. Donors make an irrevocable gift of cash
and other assets to the fund, which are then invested to maximize the worth of the contri-bution and increase its value. Donors can make grant recommendations on which registered charities receive dona-tions. In return they are provided with an immediate tax benefit that can be carried for-ward up to five years, and they have a con-tinuing philanthropic legacy. A Charitable Remainder Trust is an option for older donors who wish to donate to charity but still require the income from their
investment. Assets are transferred into a trust and the donor gets an immediate tax benefit. The donor continues to receive income during their lifetime and the charity receives the assets when the donor dies. The Story is ChangingNew chapters are being written in
the fight against Alzheimer Disease.
Earlier diagnosis and new methods to treat and manage the disease are just some of the exciting developments in the understanding and treatment ofAlzheimer Disease.
People with the disease, likeFred West, are speaking out, sharing their stories of hope :
“People should know that this is a physical disease. I’m really no less smart than I ever was – I just have a problem accessing information. Sometimes I get words mixed up. Sometimes I forget. I’m no less a person because of Alzheimer Disease. When I was diagnosed, I toldeveryone I knewthat I had the disease. Why? If you know about it, you cando somethingabout it.“
To learn more or to help us write the next chapter, contact 1-800-263-3367 or visit www.alzheimer.sk.ca.
Help for today. Hope for tomorrow...
