Pastor Brent Campbell

Dear Zion Church Family,

“God’s Work, Our Hands” is our stewardship theme this fall. Psalm 145:16 says: “You open your hand, satisfying the desire of every living thing.” It’s a great reminder that everything we hold in our hands comes from the hand of God—from the food we eat, our friends and family, our faith, and our abilities and treasure. We have been blessed so that we can do God’s work in the world—with our hands. Our hands reach out to others through Zion in so many ways: to serve, to love, to worship, and to give.

In early October, every Zion household should receive a mailing that contains the stewardship materials. You will be invited to make a commitment to the 2016 General Fund and to continue your commitment to the Building Fund (the Sanctuary renewal project). The General Fund covers our day-to-day operating expenses, as well as our support of local and global missions. The Building Fund enables us to meet the monthly mortgage for our beautiful worship space and church home.

In addition, this year the mailing will include a “worship volunteer opportuni-ties” card. We ask you to consider how you might serve in the year ahead as a worship volunteer.

Commitment cards for “God’s Work, Our Hands” may be returned during worship on the weekend of October 24 and 25. If you will not be in attendance please mail them in beforehand or place them in the basket on the counter of the information center in the Lower Commons area.

Consider how God has opened his hand to provide for you. Consider how the Zion congregation reaches out with all of our hands to do God’s work in the world. Please prayerfully consider how you will do God’s work with your hands. Remember, it is more than just a “tag line”… it is our calling… God’s Work, Our Hands. Thank you for your generous support of the mission of Zion Lutheran Church and for opening your hands to share your blessings!

building updates and thrivent dollars

update on the roof Maintenance ProjectThank you to all who generously gave to the Roof Maintenance Project. To date the total gifts given were $47,336. We have also made a loan modifi-cation to our mortgage with Mission Investment Fund in order to receive $210,000. We did not need to refinance, we just added onto our current loan. With this money received from Mission Investment Fund and your generous gifts we are able to complete the whole roof project, including the ventilation in the Preschool and Sunday school rooms, Art Room and Fireside Room.

a new addition to your pew! We will be putting pew pads in all the pews, not the kind you sit on, but the kind you write on! We are asking people at the beginning of each service to sign their name and pass it down the row and then back so that you can get to know your pew mates! It will also help us be more welcoming to visitors who are worshipping at Zion. We hope that even if you aren’t a visitor you will still sign the pad and let us know if you ever need a pastor to call. Inside each of the pads will also be prayer cards for your prayer concerns.

thrivent choice Dollars October 25 | 8:30 am - 11:00 am | Lower CommonsIt’s that time of year again to think about designating your Thrivent “Choice Dollars”. Or you may designate your “Choice Dollars” by visiting www.thrivent.com/choicedollars. Our local Thrivent Representative, Michael Sundsmo, will be here at Zion on Sunday, October 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to answer any questions you have regarding Thrivent Choice Dollars. Zion Pre-K welcomes you to support the children as they participate in their Halloween costume parades on October 28 - 30. Also – if anyone would like to donate pumpkins to the classroom, we would be very grateful!

a note of farewell from Pastor kathie

Dear Members of Zion,

Yesterday the congregation of St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Bloomington voted to call me as their Associate Pastor, and I will accept this call. I'm guessing that this isn't a big surprise to you, but to be honest the timing is a bit of a surprise to me. A few months ago my name surfaced within the congregation, and after Peter's depar-ture I had a sense I would eventually leave Zion as well - such is the complexity of serving as a clergy couple. After reading the ministry profile of St. Stephen I knew I had to be open to the conversation, and during each interview I was moved "off center". Strange how the Spirit works. They have been without an Associate Pastor for a year, and are looking for someone to help them grow deeper spiritually. So here we are. I can't ask others to be open to the work of the Spirit if I'm not open as well. My last Sunday will be October 25, and I will begin at St. Stephen on November 1. I am so very grateful for our time of ministry together, and l ask for your prayers. Know that you are in my prayers during this (yet again) time of transition. You are blessed with very gifted pastors and a wonderful staff - all will be well! Thank you for the opportunity to serve at Zion - God is good. Blessings,

Pastor Kathie

transition plan

Pastor Brent Campbell

Dear Family of Zion, As you may have heard by now, Pastor Kathie Nycklemoe has accepted a call to serve as Associate Pastor at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Bloomington. Pastor Kathie's last Sunday will be on October 25th. A farewell reception for Pastor Kathie will be held that Sunday and we will let you know the details soon. We give thanks to God for her very faithful and fruitful ministry at Zion. She will be greatly missed, yet we offer her our prayers and our blessing in her new call at St. Stephen's. We have already put together a transition plan to cover Pastor Kathie's pastoral responsibilities. Pastor Sue Wallager will increase her hours from part-time to full-time in November. We are also in the process of contracting with a part-time Interim Associate Pastor who will start in November and a very part-time person to coordinate our Adult Education ministry. In October, our Church Council will begin discussing the process for calling a permanent pastor to assume Pastor Kathie's responsibilities. Please know that your pastors and leaders are committed to maintaining Zion's health, vitality, and mission and we trust that God will continue to lead us and guide us with the Holy Spirit. We appreciate your prayers as we move forward. In Christ, Pastor Brent Campbell Jamie GabouryPastor for Leadership Congregation President
