Ah, summer time, when the living’s easy and schedules are light, right? In some ways, it is. It’s a time for family vacations, reunions, and get-togethers; it’s a time to relax, renew, and refresh. I like that last word the best. It is one that is often used in the world of computes. To refresh means “an act or function of updating the display on a screen.” In other words, when all else fails, we refresh and start over. But refresh can also mean “to give new strength or energy to; to reinvigorate, revitalize, fortify, enliven, perk up, stimulate, energize, and exhilarate.” Those are words we use in the Church as we travel through this long season of the Sundays of Pentecost. Pentecost was the occasion when the formerly-timid disciples, locked behind closed doors, or pondering returning to their former lives, felt the rush of a mighty wind and tongues of fire rested on each of them. From there, they were refreshed by the power of the Holy Spirit to go forth and boldly proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. They were given new strength and energy to face their fears and carry on the work of the Kingdom. They were reinvigorated, revitalized, fortified, enlivened, perked up, stimulated, and exhilarated for the tasks ahead. Whew! The work of the Church does not stop for the summer or take a vacation from its mission. Even at Prince of Peace there are many things that still take place besides our weekly worship time together: Youth activities, summer camp, Vacation Bible School, baptisms, weddings, to name just a few. But what I challenge you to this summer as you enjoy those lighter schedules, is to ponder how God might be calling you to “refresh.” Is there something you have been considering in your service to God or our congregation? Has God been speaking to your heart about a task that you’ve been avoiding? Is there a path that you are being led towards that you’re not sure about? Time to refresh… See you in Church, Peace, Pastor Ted D. Kerr, III

Our Christian sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Francis Compora, Andrew Cousino’s grandmother, who passed away in March. Our sympathy is also extended to the family and friends of Judy Abbott, Betty Nickel’s sister, who passed away on May 4. And our sympathy is extended to the family and friends of James Herkimer, Laura Woelmer’s cousin, who also passed away on May 4. May the God of comfort be with them all in this their time of need.

Benefits of worship We go to church to be with others who either know God or wish to know God. The church is a place of acceptance, friendship and fellowship. It’s a place to honor and worship our loving Creator who accepts us as family. In church we pray to God, sing about God, hear God’s Word for us and find support and direction for whatever challenges face us. In church we find comfort in our sorrow, encouragement in our struggles and the Holy Spirit’s assurance that “all things work together for good for those who love God” (Romans 8:28, NRSV).

Five of our youth celebrated their Affirmation of Baptism on Sunday, May 21 during the 8:30 service. The coffee hour was in their honor.

Claire Isabel Bacarella Hebrews 11:1 - Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Aaron Christopher Dean Isaiah 40:31 - But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Xander Cade Friedrich Psalm 107:1 - Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. Alex Arthur Kull I John 4:7 - Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Reid Christopher Woelmer Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Our next Contemporary service is on

Sunday, June 11 at 6:30 PM.

Bring a friend, dress casual,

and join us in worship.

We are looking for people who might be interested in providing a simple dinner for our A†OMIC Band on the nights of our Contemporary Worship Services. Many of you may not be aware that our A†OMIC praise band come together before each of our monthly Contemporary Services to prepare, practice, and share in a meal and fellowship together. We are looking for church members who would be willing to provide and serve the meal. This would help tremendously in lightening our load of responsibilities, and it would be an opportunity to share and show support for this ongoing ministry. The meals are usually quite simple (i.e., tacos, sloppy joes, pizza, spaghetti, etc.) and always greatly appreciated. If you would like to help in this way, please contact Gina Staelgraeve (734-347-3109 / [email protected]) to sign up for a month. The service is always on the second Sunday of every month and the meal is served at 5:30 p.m. Paper products and beverages are already on hand, so would not be needed.

The Holy Grounds crew is in full swing! If you enjoy the outdoors and can lend a hand for an hour on Thursday mornings, we would love to have you join us! Bring your garden gloves, buckets and garden tools and show up on any given Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. As long as it's not raining, we will be here. The church has several acres of property to care for--memorial beds around the church, landscaping around the parsonage and the church cemetery. "Many hands make the load light." (AND we will offer you a free cup of coffee! :)

Do you desire to serve in a more spiritual manner? Liturgical ministers are needed to prepare for our 11:00 services in the fall. It is a very fulfilling and meaningful way to make a contribution to the worship service. You do not have to be able to sing or chant. The chanting parts have the option of being spoken or Pastor could and is willing to do that for you. We read the lessons and some of the prayers and assist with communion. It is not hard,

but it is rewarding. If you are interested, please talk to one of the liturgical ministers, Betty Nickel, Joy Fox, Jan Fruchey, or Kim Zietlow. We’d love to have you participate in this special service.

We are accomplishing many things at the Ida Kids Center! Preschool graduation and the ice cream social are complete. We had 27 students graduate and 17 attend the ice cream social for the younger students. It is always a bittersweet time for the staff. Every year there are some families whose youngest child has completed our program. Many of these children and their siblings have been a part of our center for quite some time. The month of June is always a transition time. This year the summer schedule will begin the first full week that the students are out of school which is June 19th. There is a nice size group already signed up for our summer program, and I’m sure we will have many more as we get closer to school being out. If you or someone you know is interested in having somewhere for your children to spend even a few structured hours a week, please keep us in mind. We are very flexible, and sometimes it helps to break up the week a little for not only the children, but parents as well. We have water, wheel, craft and cooking, fitness and science and fun lunch days to choose from. Of course we are open from 6am-6pm if you need a more full-time daycare as well. The staff has recently completed many professional development classes around the area, and will soon be updating our CPR and First Aid qualifications. We also have a few upcoming trainings planned for later this summer. Don’t forget to visit our website or “Like” us on Facebook. We have had many fun pictures on our page over the past few weeks. The Ida Kids Center transferred $500 to the church for the month of May. We wish everyone a safe and happy month! God Bless, Nancy Hunter Program Director

The new furnace and AC in the Community Center is now installed and functioning as we await final state inspections and approval. The AC will run only on an “as-needed” basis for special events. Both the heating system and AC have high-efficiency and off-peak settings to save on energy costs over the long haul. We wanted to acknowledge and give thanks for everyone who has donated to this upgrade through your gifts and time. To you the members of Prince of Peace who at our Annual Meeting gave your blessings to extend the loan to finance the majority of the project; the IKC for their donation of $15,000 towards it; memorials from the family of Don Pullou that helped offset the majority of the LED lighting upgrades to free up power, and the family of George Fox for the memorial donation; Dean Lloyd for the donation of crane service to put the units on the roof; Jeff Lampkowski for the brickwork to fill in the hole from the old furnace; and all of our trustees Ivan Kamprath, Jim Roderick (electrical work), Dick Kamprath, and Dave Lorenzo; and many other volunteers who put in countless hours to make it happen.

We are blessed at Prince of Peace with many generous and gifted folks who willingly share of their time and talents to realize great cost savings in these major projects. Your selfless sharing helps us to put those funds back into ministry and outreach for Christ within and outside of our congregation.

A very special thank you to those in my, as the card read, “Church Family” that had anything to do with the flowers and card for Administrative Professionals Day. Kim Kibat Thanks to the Holy Grounds crew for their work effort at the Prince of Peace church cemetery. The cemetery is part of our history and our responsibility. Your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks to all who helped with, participated in and shopped at the Mom 2 Mom sale. The youth groups made $1252.75 at this sale. The youth chose to donate $125 to the Jasmin Torres Memorial Fund. In addition, two truckload of items were donated to New Beginnings Mercy House at the end of the sale. I would like to thank Diane Kerr, Barb DeLand, Ed Burgess and Lynne Zabawa. On Thursday, April 27 I was at the cemetery helping out with Holy Grounds. Every now and then I have a spell where I feel dizzy, weak, and short of breath. It happened that day and they took care of me. Thanks and God Bless, Bob Winkelman Thanks to all who donated food and helped serve the God Works! dinner this month. We served 36 people and received compliments and thank yous. Thanks for helping, again. Blessings, Joy Thank you, thank you, thank you to Dean Lloyd! Dean volunteered his crane and services to hoist the new HVAC system onto the Community Center roof. This donation from Dean created a considerable savings on the cost of our new heating and air conditioning system. Our trustees continue to put in countless hours to maintain and improve our church facilities. They have recently ordered a new hand rail assist for the office door entrance. A big "thanks" goes out to Luke Kreps for his volunteer work to install the rail. This rail and the newer sloped approach to the door will be helpful for members and visitors with mobility issues. Special thanks to Tom & Jan Fruchey for have the carpet cleaned in the front part of the sanctuary last month.

Laurie Sherman is the WELCA Chairperson for the month of July. She will be contacting each person on the July list of helpers to line up coffee hours throughout the month. Feel free to recruit your own helpers and let Laurie know at 734-269-2006 which Sunday you’d like to provide for. July WELCA helpers include: Jennifer Abram; Terry Adams; Janet Brindley; Jill Burgess; Kristina, Sarah & Heather Cassidy; Jackie Daily; Helen DeBruin; Corliss Heiden; Kasey Orr; Stephanie Ott; Dawn Pluff; Kellie Reeder; Cheryl Stevens; Cheryl Stotz; and Pat Whitaker.

Due to popular demand, we now have regular as well as decaf coffee in the Gathering Place kitchen. We've been making regular in the large pot and decaf in the Mr. Coffee. Enjoy! Joy Women are needed to assist the Altar Guild with the preparation of the Altar for the distribution of Holy Communion and clean up afterward. You’d be working with someone who has served and knows what to do. Training is provided. Contact Carol Kamprath or the church office if you are willing to serve or would like more information.

Vacation Bible School is July 16 thru 20, from 6-7:30 PM.

This year’s theme is “HERO Central”,

where kids “Discover Their Strength in God!”

All kids will get capes to be decorated on the first day!

Parents, have you noticed the time change for

VBS? Small snacks will be served instead of a light

meal. This means not rushing

(and maybe skipping dinner yourselves) to get the kids here in time to eat.

The earlier dismissal time will allow everyone to get home, wind down, bath time, etc. before it’s

past bedtime.

Registration forms/sign up sheets will be available by June 18.

It takes volunteers and donations of supplies to make this a success. Vacation Bible School costs our church approximately $10-$12 for each child. Since VBS is free to every child, we would appreciate any monetary donations as well. Using the envelopes marked VBS in the narthex, please make checks payable to “Prince of Peace Lutheran Church”, include your name and envelope number, and place in the offering plate.

ANY AND ALL HELP WILL BE GERATLY APPRECIATED!

If you have any questions, please contact Meagan Winkelman, Cindy Schumaker, or Diane Winkelman.
