Against the stream of global economy

our company has been developing in the right direction over the past year, and in the first half of this year, we were able to achieve the 7% profit goal. You are all to thank for this accom-plishment.

An upheaval is expected in the global market in the last quarter of 2012. It’s going to be especially significant in Europe as significant deci-sions affecting the economy of the entire eurozone are expected in the lat-ter part of the year. In addition to Europe, economic growth has also slowed down in other big economies. The positive financial development of Russia seems stable for the next few years still, and we believe that Nurminen’s Russian business will continue to develop and grow despite the challeng-es in the global economy. The positive outlook we published is also largely based on the good operations in Russia.

In any case, the difficult economic situation is going to be reflected in Nurminen Logistics’ clientele, and we as a service provider will have to quickly adapt our operations to meet the demand. We have been able to do this successfully, which is reflected in the improved result we announced to the market at the end of September. This year has developed more positively than expected for Nurminen Logistics especially in terms of profit, and the company expects a significantly better result from operations than in 2011.

This means that Nurminen is swimming against the current of the glob-al economy. We have been able to make a stable profit thanks to our activ-ities, the flexibility of our staff and the correct choice of service products. This is a well-thought direction as Nurminen has to be profitable, able to grow and look into the future also in the years to come. We continue to focus even more on the Russian and Baltic operations and profitable growth in these regions. Nurminen Logistics is present in the most important future freight transport centres and our main harbours in Finland and in the Bal-tic countries. Our terminals are well placed in terms of railway traffic to Russia. Efficient use of our own wagon equipment in the growing Russian railway market and creating new service concepts for Russia is of particu-lar importance to us. Russia and Asia behind it are especially important for us in the future.

The Board of Directors specifies the goals of the company, but it’s the personnel under skilled management who make the actual result. The implementation of our company strategy has progressed well, resulting in improved profitability of our operations. Together we can create the nec-essary preconditions for profitability, the existence of the company, as well as ensuring customer service and that our high-grade product is produced efficiently. s

The name of Nurminen Logis-tics’ St. Petersburg subsidi-ary has changed. The new name, OOO Nurminen Logis-tics, entered into force on 7 September 2012. The name change is based on the imple-mentation of Nurminen Logis-tics’ strategy and the harmonis-ing of its operations and look. The St. Petersburg subsidiary’s name used in official Russian contacts is OOO “Нурминен Лоджистикс” and its market-ing name is OOO Nurminen Logistics.

2 Nurminen develops the quality of work

life and staff productivity Nurminen Logistics’ Forwarding and Added-Value Services business unit is taking part in the “More emphasis on the development of the productivity of person-nel” project, which began this autumn. The goals of the development programme are both qualitative and quantitative. Quantita-tive goals include a concrete improvement of business capacity and productivity. Qualitative goals are the improvement of management and the organisational cul-ture, which is reflected as an improvement of the quality of work life experienced by employees, customer satisfaction, cooper-ation, well-being at work and work motiva-tion. The project will run until September 2013, and it is being carried out in cooper-ation with Mcompetence Oy.

3 Paula Kupiainen Nurminen’s new CFO

Paula Kupiainen, M. Sc., 51, started as Nurminen Logistics’ new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Member of the Executive Board on 17 September. Before joining Nur-minen Logistics, Paula Kupiainen had been the Chief Financial Officer of the Polttimo Group since 2007. She has also worked as a management consultant at Ernst & Young and as CFO at Thomeko and Outokumpu Wenmec Oy.

“Paula Kupiainen has comprehensive experience of managing financial adminis-tration in various fields of business. Nurminen Outotec’s logistics partner for a concentrating plant delivery to russia

Outotec has selected Nurminen Logistics as its partner for the concen-trating plant delivery to the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. Outotec’s delivery comprises the planning of the entire concentrating plant, the principal pro-cess equipment for flotation and dehy-dration including 12 of the world’s largest TankCell® 300 flotation cells, the Proscon® automation system, instrumentation and electrification as well as spare parts and services for the supervision of installation, start-up and training. The equipment deliveries will take place in 2012 and 2013.

The Outotec delivery to Chely-abinsk is an important project for Nur-minen. It contains transport both by railway and by road. The majority of the equipment will be loaded in Nur-minen’s Hamina terminal which is an

excellent loading location both geo-graphically and in terms of its other attributes. Numerous special deliver-ies are linked to the project by both road and rail. Dozens of normal loads and container transports will also take place. Nurminen Logistics takes care of all the logistics, including, in addi-tion to the transport, documentation, loading and other terminal work, such as the labelling of containers. The total volume of transports is approxi-mately 17,000 m³.

Nurminen Logistics has been Outotec’s logistics partner several times before this project. In August– September 2012, Nurminen delivered Outotec’s equipment (total volume slightly over 3,000 m³) from Estonia to Kotelnikovo in the Volgograd region. s

A Metso Minerals mine crusher delivered to italy

In August–September 2012, Nurminen Logistics transported a Metso Minerals roller crusher and its conveyor systems from Fin-land and the Baltic countries to Anagni, Italy, some 100 km from Rome. The total project volume was approximately 1,000 m3 and consisted of both normal loads and special parcels. The deliveries were made by road and by sea and also included the required handling.

The combined, mobile LokoTrack and LokoLink system by Metso Minerals consists of an independently mobile roller crusher in combination with a mobile conveyor sys-tem. Thanks to the mobile crusher and elec-trical conveyor, rock no longer needs to be transported to a fixed primary crusher. Energy efficiency and occupational safety are improved and emissions to air as well as dust and noise are reduced as dumper lor-ries are not needed. s

Nurminen Logistics has been providing warehouse storage for packed chem-icals in Mussalo harbour since 2004.

The chemicals are stored in facilities with category-specific compartments in the warehouse of approximately 8,000 square metres.

– We hold a permit for extensive warehouse storage of dangerous chemicals. This means that we are able to store all types of trade and industry substances classified as dan-gerous, with the exception of radio-active substances and explosives, says Risto Holopainen, director in charge of chemical warehouse storage at Nurminen Logistics.

The safety of chemical warehouse storage is controlled by legislation. Chemical safety legislation aims to reduce and prevent personal, envi-ronmental and material damage caused by the storage and other han-dling of chemicals.

– Solving and meeting the custom-er’s service requirement with careful consideration of the safety of person-nel and the environment is impor-tant to us in the warehouse storage of chemicals. This requires a continuous development of our skills and safety practices. We identify the risks relat-ed to chemicals and our processes and carry out regular safety training in our warehouse, explains Holopainen.

Chemicals efficiently to Finland and RussiaMussalo harbour is in an excellent location both in terms of traffic over to Russia and domestic Finnish transportation.

– Mussalo’s location is excellent for logistics. We are able to offer our cus-tomers next-day delivery in Finland. Also companies in the Helsinki met-ropolitan area should consider using

Kotka for storage due to the more economical price level. In addition, lots of daily goods are delivered from the Helsinki area to stores near the eastern border, meaning that cost-efficient transportation of goods back to the metropolitan area is available. From Mussalo, goods are transported to Russia and other CIS countries by both road and railways. There is an internal railway track in our chem-ical warehouse, so goods are loaded and unloaded indoors, Holopainen continues.

Shared responsibility for safetyLeena Ahonen, senior inspector at Tukes, the Finnish Safety and Chem-icals Agency supervising the exten-sive handling and warehouse stor-age of dangerous chemicals explains that there are plans for developments in the supervision of dangerous chem-icals in cooperation with several authorities.

– We are about to start coopera-tion with Trafi, the Finnish Trans-port Safety Agency, to harmonise our operations and to determine respon-

sibilities in more detail. At this time, there is some uncertainty as to who is responsible for dangerous substanc-es when they are in a vehicle, either in traffic or in a stationary truck or railway wagon. The transportation event itself requires no chemical per-mits, says Ahonen.

– We also intend to clarify the limits between temporary storage and ware-house storage in order to harmonise operations in areas where both trans-port and warehousing are involved, such as harbours or terminals.

Reloading of dangerous chemicals in areas that are not supervised by Tukes always poses a safety risk. Tukes also stresses that even when international warning symbols are used, according to Finnish legislation, labels in Finnish and Swedish are required on packaging. s

Productisation improves the operations and efficien-cy of the Vuosaari logis-tics centre in many ways. When services are offered as clearly defined prod-

ucts, the operations become more sys-tematic and operational planning is improved. At the same time, staff are less rushed and goals become clearer. Productisation also affects the qual-ity of services, as quality criteria can be specified in more detail and quali-ty assessment becomes easier.

Productisation is based on Nur-minen Logistics’ desire to clarify its operations and focus on specific oper-ations.

– In Vuosaari, productisation does not mean that we just give the custom-er a list of products to choose from. Quite contrary, different products can be modified and combined even more flexibly than before to fit the individ-ual needs of each customer, says Sen-ior Vice President Janne Lehtimäki who is in charge of the Vuosaari logis-tics centre.

– Our operations towards the cus-tomer also become clearer. We all share a common idea of the price, con-tent, responsibilities and implemen-tation of the service.

Nurminen Logistics holds some 34,000 square metres of terminal space in the Vuosaari logistics centre. The logistics centre is like a minia-ture Nurminen – a full-service logis-tics house offering all logistics servic-es from a single point of service.

– The customer can rely on us for the implementation of either a part of the delivery chain or the entire pro-cess. We are able to deliver termi-

nal services and added-value servic-es as part of our own production and can even add documentation and cus-toms clearance services to the pack-age, Lehtimäki says.

– Different customers have dif-ferent types of needs also in terms of added-value services. They can always contact us even when they don’t know how something can be done. We will then look into our exist-ing service packages and determine the suitable solution in cooperation with the customer. s

Machines and equipment can be handled and loaded in the heavy hall.

An importer is contemplating whether to buy a product from the Eu or from Asia. The total cost

of imports was unclear. Nurminen calculated the customs clearance value for the customer, enabling

them to make a cost-efficient decision.

It was the end of 2008. Nurminen Logistics was opening a logistics cen-tre in the brand-new Vuosaari harbour in Helsinki in November and was look-ing for skilled and motivated employees. The company decided to carry out a recruitment programme to find the most competent people. At the same time, a young man called Toni Laakkonen was 14 points short of getting into the univer-sity of Applied Sciences and was figur-ing out what to do next. Along with 400 other applicants, Toni applied for the Nurminen recruitment programme and was selected as one of 13 applicants.

– During the recruitment programme, we were given an orientation on our future duties in Nurminen offices all around Finland. We got to do real work in terminals in Kotka, Vainikkala and Luumäki, explains Toni.

When the training programme con-taining both theory and practice ended, the new Nurminen employees were ready for action when the Vuosaari har-bour and Nurminen’s new logistics centre were opened in snowstorm in November 2008.

– I started working in the Vuosaari flow-through terminal where we pro-cessed goods transferred through the terminal and loaded trucks and contain-ers, explains Toni.

Form the flow-through terminal and terminal worker duties, Toni moved to the position of container coordina-tor. In Vuosaari, the container coordina-tor is responsible for receiving incom-ing containers, ordering the removal of

empty containers and informing the cus-tomer. Almost two years went by coordi-nating containers until the opportunity to become a forwarder opened up in May 2012.

– I serve our customers in the nerve centre as we call our terminal office. I receive incoming goods to the termi-nal and send outgoing cargo on its way. Our nerve centre also acts as the main entrance to the head office. We have an important duty to receive and pro-vide a good service for all visitors to head office, not just the truck drivers who come to deliver or pick up a load, says Toni.

Naturally, a global understanding and experience of different positions is always an advantage. It makes it easier

to understand why things work the way they do. Toni has actively sought oppor-tunities to develop himself at Nurminen and to accept more demanding tasks. As a result, his duties have become more varied, which makes the work more enjoyable. The development of person-nel also brings necessary expertise and skills to the company.

– I’m currently studying for a vocational degree in foreign trade at Edupoli. The one-year training improves my profes-sional skills and can easily be done along-side my work. Opportunities such as this bring new enthusiasm to my work, Toni says. s

Forwarder Toni Laakkonen has held many posi-tions in Vuosaari.

It’s a fact that at Nurminen, it is the terminal workers who do the actual work. It’s up to them whether the customer gets what they have ordered and expect to receive. Terminal work is, however, just one part of the jobs offered by a Nurminen logistics centre. The best part is to be able to try out different types of jobs without having to change companies. Forwarder Toni Laakkonen working in Vuosaari is a good example of successful work rotation.

1 Viacheslav Gladilin, who works as a Traffic Supervisor at Nur-minen’s Imatra office, trans-ferred to Finland from Nurmin-

en’s St. Petersburg subsidiary in 2011. Viacheslav, or Slava for short, still also acts as the Vice President of Nurmin-en’s subsidiary, OOO Nurminen Logis-tics. When the position of Traffic Super-visor of railway operations opened up in Imatra, Slava’s colleagues said that the list of requirements for the job made it sound more like a job for a Traffic Super-man. Slava applied for the position and was found to meet all the requirements of a superman. As someone who knows two languages and cultures, Slava can

also be indispensable in the cooperation between Finnish and Russian staff.

2 Slava works at Imatra, where Nurminen carries out for-warding operations and measurements of raw wood

from Russia. The location of Imatra is also excellent with regard to Nurminen’s terminals on the eastern border, from Vainikkala to Niirala. Slava has recently also been working on Nurminen’s spe-cial railway deliveries, which are loaded in Vainikkala and in Niirala. He has been involved in the planning, loading and monitoring of special deliveries. Nur-minen transports special deliveries to

Russia and other CIS countries both on rubber and iron wheels.

3 The loading drawings of Rus-sian special deliveries may sometimes cause quite a bit of a headache in Finland.

Deficient attachment of parcels caused by the deciphering of the drawings, for example, may cause the railway wag-ons to be sent to Finland from the Rus-sian border. Slava has worked with rail-way transport in Russia for his entire career and knows that smooth trans-port requires doing things right from the beginning. a Finnish terminal worker feels that 14 nails would be sufficient to keep the par-cel safely in place, they should still ham-mer in the last nail as well. The position of each nail has been calculated math-ematically, and the wagon will not move into Russia until the number of nails cor-responds to the drawings.

4 There may sometimes be errors or inaccuracies in the loading drawings that are only detected at the time of

loading. It may have taken a week or more to correct the drawings in the past, but nowadays it’s done in a couple of days. When people at a Nurminen ter-

minal notice that a drawing prepared in Russia needs to be corrected, Slava con-tacts the drawer directly and asks them to make the required corrections. The corrected drawing is sent to VR via Slava and then onwards to RZD for approval. When RZD approves the amendment, VR grants Nurminen a special transport permit. Slava follows up on the drawing by maintaining contacts with all parties of the process. It is also possible now-adays that a specialist at RZD respon-sible for the acceptance of wagons and the attachment of the load in the Russian side will come to Finland was the wagons are being loaded to make sure that eve-rything is in order for a smooth transport.

5 Slava compares special railway deliveries with a marathon: care-ful preparation is the most cer-tain and fastest way to the fin-

What is vaulting?Vaulting is acrobatics and gymnastics on the back of a cantering horse. It is thought to have originated either in ancient Rome or in Greece. Now-adays, competetive vaulting or show vaulting is carried out as individuals, pairs and teams. Up to three people may be on horseback simultaneously. At the international competive level, the horse is always cantering, but in domestic competitions, there are also beginner level competitions in which the horse walks. Vaulting competi-tions consist of compulsory exercises and freestyle programmes. Vaulting came to Finland in the early 1980s, and there are currently somewhere between 200 and 300 vaulters.

It sounds pretty difficult and dangerous?In fact, fewer serious accidents take place in vaulting than in traditional riding. Horses used in vaulting usual-ly have nerves of steel, and the lung-er directs the horse from the ground using a lunge line and a lunge whip. The horse wears a surcingle with two handles that the vaulter can hold on to. No helmet is used because it would create more additional risks in the exercises than it would protect against. Vaulting actually looks a lot wilder than it really is. I can swear that any colleague of mine would

How did you become a vaulter?I started vaulting when I was 9 or 10. This was a cheaper hobby than rid-ing, but still offered the opportuni-ty to be around horses. I was in the national vaulting team in 1990–1995, but then had to give up my beloved hobby because of my studies. In 2005, I decided to start judge training. I’m currently also a consulting coach of the national team and Chairman of the Vaulting Committee of the Eques-trian Federation of Finland.

What does the sport require?Many vaulters also do apparatus gymnastics or acrobatics. Success on an international level requires body control, strength and flexibili-ty. Vaulting is often thought of as a hobby for children and young people, but I have also instructed groups for adults. Granted, they were all moth-ers of vaulter girls, but vaulting is naturally also allowed for boys and men. Participating in vaulting com-petitions is possible from the age of 7.

What is the best part of vaulting?That it’s an equestrian sport. A horse is quite a different thing from a tres-tle, for example, because the horse’s moods may swing just like those of the vaulter. Also, the speed of the sport is fascinating. Vaulting makes your adrenalin run, and every vault-ing exercise is an exercise in mas-tering yourself. Judging, on the oth-er hand, is everything but relaxing, but it does take your mind off oth-er things. When judging the free-style exercise, for example, you have to score the horse, difficulty, perfor-mance and design or the interpreta-tion of music, structure of the exer-cise and the harmony of dynamic and static movements. When you are focusing on all of that, it’s quite impossible to think about anything else, such as work. s

You came to Nurminen from a position in a pension insurance company. How does selling logistics differ from selling pension insurance?On a practical level, the difference is that every entre-preneur needs insurance under the Self-Employed Persons’ Pensions Act and many also need insurance according to the Employees’ Pension Act when the company expands and hires employees. This means that in the world of pension insurance, every entre-preneur is a potential customer. Logistics services, on the other hand, are something that not every company needs. But sales are made by talking, so there’s no dif-ference in that respect.

What is your first impression of Nurminen as a place of work?My first impression of Nurminen is very positive. It’s an active community with a kind of fever that’s missing in the pension insurance world.

You’re on the road most of your working hours. How do you deal with travelling all the time?You have to enjoy moving and espe-cially driving. It may take a little bit of craziness also... The custom-ers are so nice that I’m happy to meet them even if it requires travelling across Finland.

What do you do in your free time?Free time, what’s that? If I ever have free time after driving the kids to their hob-bies, I go to the gym, run with the dogs or renovate, fix or build something. s

Where did you work before joining Nurminen?I came to Nurminen from Winwind Oy in Hamina, where I worked as logistics coordinator responsible for project logis-tics and maintenance and spare parts logistics. s

You’ve been working in logistics for a long time. What kinds of things have you done over the years?I have been working in forwarding and transport for 15 years. I started as an export forwarder of ground and sea transport with Kuehne & Nagel in 1997. During the five years with that company, I also did desk sales and acted as the team leader in Rauma. After Kuehne & Nagel, I worked as an import forwarder with Rauma Stevedoring for four years, taking care of sea imports from France, Great Brit-ain and Germany and coordinating several customer ware-houses. After that I returned to Kuehne & Nagel, but this time in Pori, where I worked as the sales manager of sea transport for 6 years.

What is the most important quality of a sales manager?For me, sales are based on a convincing salesperson who knows their product. Being able to customise customer-spe-cific solutions for each customer is becoming increasingly important. A good salesperson also listens to the customer and is able to communicate with different types of people. Naturally, they are also able to get results. s

What does your work at OOO Nurminen Logistics entail?I take care of the processing of transit transport in Russia. When the cargo leaves Finland for CIS countries, I make the necessary tariff payments and stay in touch with my Finnish colleagues. I also prepare instructions on how to fill in waybills from the departure station to the destination. I follow up on the transit payments and the return of our wag-ons to Finland.

What is the best part about your work?I enjoy working at Nurminen. We’re a harmonious commu-nity with a good spirit. I enjoy working with customers and having plenty of variation in my duties. s

At the crack of dawn, Erkki Sinkko switches on his computer and checks what has happened in New York during the night. If he’s at

home at ten o’clock, Sinkko watch-es the opening of the Helsinki stock exchange. The retired teacher spends his days “flying” around the city, in company information events and in shareholders’ meetings.

– My daily routine is pretty much the same every day. My wife and I are both usually home by around 3 p.m. I then open my computer and if things look good, I may make a transaction. I just bought Atria because I felt the share price was too low considering that the company made a positive result in the second quarter. The pace of trade is so quick nowadays. You can make a deal in a couple of seconds, when previously it could take sever-al days, Sinkko tells us.

Investing is a hobby of the entire Sinkko family. His wife and two chil-dren, as well as their children, are all involved to a greater or lesser extent, at least in the role of advisers. The family currently holds a portfolio worth several millions of euros.

– We have been investing in stock for more than 40 years. It’s been a long journey, but nowadays we don’t

really have to do anything with the portfolio except cash in dividends and, if we choose to do so, invest the money back to create interest on interest, Sinkko says.

The investor’s opinion counts Erkki Sinkko chooses tea in Stock-mann’s eight-floor café. He’s going to have coffee with a former student lat-er that day in the ground floor café. Sinkko, a regular commentator in Finnish media, also meets the press at Stockmann. Kauppalehti, Arvo-paperi and Talouselämä magazines often write about Erkki Sinkko. Also, the afternoon papers are eager to ask for Sinkko’s comments on all kinds of news.

– An Iltalehti reporter called me some time ago to ask me what phone I was using. I was a bit confused and said, Nokia 3310. The journalist got really excited and said they’d send a photographer right away. A couple of minutes later, a sweaty young man arrived on bicycle to take a picture of me and my 12-year-old Nokia phone, Sinkko, a former afternoon newspaper journalist himself, tells with a smile.

Erkki Sinkko has been involved in Nokia discussions for more than 30 years. He made the headlines last spring by announcing that he would

boycott Nokia’s annual general meet-ing as a protest against the compa-ny’s weak management.

– I trusted Nokia and was disap-pointed. Finns didn’t have enough knowledge and skills after all. It’s also a question of setting a direc-tion in the Board. Nokia should’ve relied on smart phones and main-tain its hegemony. Apple was nearly bankrupt 10 years ago, and now has a hegemony. In 1992, Nokia wasn’t even good enough for Eriksson until Jorma Ollila brought the company above water, Sinkko says.

all things Finnish and the Kaleva-la. The Sinkko family’s stock portfo-lio consists purely of shares in Finn-ish companies. They currently hold stock in 86 companies of the approxi-mately 130 listed Finnish companies. Being “Finnish” is naturally a waver-ing concept as basically all Finnish listed companies are international. According to Sinkko, being interna-tional is a prerequisite for the success of a Finnish company. Many Finnish public companies mention Russia in their strategy, and so does also Nur-minen Logistics. Nurminen already has a strong foothold in Russia, but it is seeking further growth in the east in particular. In Sinkko’s opin-ion, Nurminen has good opportunities to succeed in Russia.

– Not many companies have been able to create anything substantial in Russia. On the other hand, some have done well, such as Nokian Renkaat, Tikkurila or Stockmann. I do place Nurminen with this tough group although the company may not be quite that tough yet, Sinkko says.

Erkki Sinkko and his family own 3,200 shares of Nurminen Logistics. It’s a small amount, but Sinkko feels the company is interesting to follow. He praises the Nurminen spirit and plans to remain a shareholder.

– Nurminen’s general meetings are always pleasant. The entire Board of Directors welcomes the shareholder at the door. This is not something that all companies do. I basically have four reasons for my holdings at Nurminen. The first one is that Nurminen is a listed company that started as a fam-ily business, and that spirit is reflect-ed in all its operations. Secondly, I am interested in history and Nurminen has a strong background. I’ve learned about it by, for example, reading books written about the company. My third reason for owning Nurminen stock is that the company was start-ed in Rauma. I feel a kind of a kin-dred spirit as I was evacuated from Karelia, and my family was relocat-ed to a place near Rauma. My fourth reason for interest is the company’s line of business. My interest in the

business was originally inspired by the book “Uljaksen vanavedessä” (“In the wake of Uljas”) about the history of the John Nurminen trading house and shipowners until the establish-ment of the company in 1967. Now-adays, the high number of compa-ny-owned railway wagons spurs my interest. Goods are shipped and east is a very interesting direction, Sink-ko sums up.

Erkki Sinkko appreciates the fact that Nurminen Logistics also allows minor shareholders and takes good care of them. As a minor sharehold-er himself, Sinkko feels that a listed company must be able to pay divi-dends to its owners.

– I brought up this issue in the annual general meeting this spring,

and the management promised to do its best. You have to be able to make a profit and pay a dividend, even a small one.

A couple of words of adviceSitting at the same table with Erkki Sinkko, also dubbed a veteran inves-tor, let’s ask him for some advice on how to get started in investing. What kind of a sum is enough to begin with?

– I myself started with the mon-ey I inherited. The inheritance was

equivalent to some 10,000 euros and that’s approximately how much you should have when you start. You could spread the sum across four companies, for example. Investing in just one company would be risky. In an ideal world, you would have approximately 15 companies, which would make the investment pretty certain to start with. If you choose companies in different lines of busi-ness, it doesn’t matter if one indus-try is going through a less favoura-ble period, because another one will be doing better. You have to follow the industries of the companies and know your companies. But you’ll never be wise enough, however. In the past 40 years, a network of each company has formed in my brain, and I can easi-ly just add more information to the network. I read biographies and other sorts of literature. I actively use the internet and read financial papers, Sinkko lectures in his investing 101.

– You should always remember, however, that earning money through investments is not easy. You have to be patient and have lots of informa-tion, Sinkko stresses.

Shares only one of his hobbiesIn addition to shareholding, Erkki Sinkko’s hobbies include postcards and Stockholm. He has more than one hundred folders full of postcards sort-ed by theme. The biggest collections are those on Finnish history and mil-itaria, but there are also collections for vehicles, horrible things, cute phe-nomena as well as all things sweet and pretty. Sinkko shows us a card presenting full coffee cups that he has just rejected from his all things sweet and pretty collection.

– The picture feels plastic, the feel-ing coming across is not sufficient, Sinkko explains.

as well, receives cards from friends and acquaintances all over the world and also sends hundreds of postcards himself every year. In addition to cof-fee at Stockmann, a large proportion of his employment pension as a sen-ior teacher goes on stamps.

His interest in the capital of Fin-land’s western neighbour started dur-ing a summer job in Gävle.

– I noticed the good standard of living in Stockholm and remember thinking that this is something to strive for. There’s always so much to see in Stockholm.

Before Christmas, Sinkko and his wife will travel to Sweden for the eighth time this year to wonder about its welfare and to see what the big Christmas Tree really looks like, as Sinkko describes the purpose of the journey. The couple enjoyed art in the Moderna Museet and good coffee in Stockholm’s numerous cafés dur-ing their previous trip in September. Once again, Stockholm lived up to their expectations, although not eve-rything went smoothly.

“The Pressbyro shop at Norrmal-men market was selling Tuesday’s Iltasanomat and Iltalehti newspa-pers on Thursday. Erkki didn’t lose his temper, however, but calmly sent his regards to the department man-ager. They promised to pass on my message,” Sinkko reports by email after the trip.

He also believes in giving feedback in his role as a shareholder.

– Even a minor investor can have an effect on the company’s direction. You can always take the floor in the general meeting, even if you just own one share. You should, however, pre-pare your comment carefully. I have heard some excellent contributions in meetings, but also some really poor ones. The degree of participation by shareholders is also a part of the com-pany culture. s

According to Nurminen:

The width of the pieces to transport required special planning, includ-ing route surveys to determine the possible route options and the related cost in detail. We started discussing the project with MW Power as long ago as October 2011, and the actual agreement on the transport was reached in May 2012. Over the winter, details were added by both the customer and ourselves, allowing us to make a more detailed route plan in June and determining the effect of any changes that had taken place during the winter. At the same time, we started planning traffic management and rest areas, as determining these in advance was important to ensure smooth transport. The pro-ject required good cooperation with the customer, MW Power, but also with subcontractors and the authorities. The cooperation ran smoothly and the transport reached its destination at the planned time. s

MW Power Oy

MW Power, which is part of the Metso Group, offers small and medium-sized power and heat plant solutions based on renewable fuels for the European market. In July 2012, Nurminen Logistics transported parts of a heat power plant manufactured by MW Power from Kiuruvesi to Sunila, Kotka. The largest part transported was almost 13 metres long and 9.5 metres wide, meaning that the transport had to be planned extra carefully.

OOO Nurminen Logistics’ staff celebrated the annual Railway Workers’ Day with a cruise to the Valamo Monastery. This poem by Larisa Borisenko, who works in the St. Petersburg office, was inspired by the trip.

We’re on our way to Valamo,

That holy place, that sacred land.

To make our journey sweeter, shorter,

They entertained us, amidst cold water,

On every deck, till dawn; we plunged ahead,

And though it seems it’s time for bed,

We’re all alive, we want more fun

And we can share with everyone

Our happy ardor. Let’s forget all sorrows!

Some broke into a dance,

While others sang in chorus.

Why, everyone did what they liked,

Each had their likings and their appetite.

Trying new poses, backgrounds, and landscapes,

Some liked it sideways, and some liked en face;

Some posed in pairs, some alone… all right,

So, we all posed until midnight.

And the results of those nice days

We see in photos full-face and sideways.

At last we saw, with no regrets,

The lovely isle of Konevets.

Despite the rain we suffered on our way,

We stepped ashore – and felt OK!

The chants of monks in the cathedral, oh!

It pierced our souls from head to toe.

Next came our lunch, a bit of sleep,

We needed it, ourselves in shape to keep.

At last, at four o’clock pm,

We saw the shores of Valamo.

Now while we sailed, the walls and falls of rain

Washed all the sins of daily fuss away.

The island, lo! it was so kind,

And greeted us, and bless’d us with sunshine.

The weather was OK, the sky was blue,

And we did all we’d planned to do.

The President of Russia, I should say,

Was there with the Patriarch that day.

We had no chance to see them. Why,

It’s a Russian habit, Russian style,

That persons of such title and rank

Are always guarded, may I say point-blank.

But we are not a bit offended,

Our Nation must be gravely steered and mended.

At last, we’re on our way home,

To our native city,

all our own.

We’re quieter now, the thrill’s half gone,

We keep to our cabins

full of thoughts

Of our families, of our darling folks.

Next day, the moment we are there,

There’ll be housekeeping, work, and daily care.

Our journey was all right, thank you!

We were so kindly treated,

and it’s true.

We’re happy, we enjoy the world, you know;

Why, we are back from just another space

So full of peace, and bliss, and grace,

And may I wish us,

steady as we go!
