On Wednesday, our school library was a hive of activity with 45 Toormina High students and 26 primary students from Crossmaglen, Toormina, Bonville, William Bayldon and Boambee working collaboratively to write a book in a day.The students, working in 8 teams, accomplished the task of planning, writing, illustrating, printing and binding a book in twelve hours. Writing began at 8am and concluded, by very weary students, at 8pm. The day was an amazing experience and all students were proud to be a part of this fun and creative competition contributing $2480 to The Kids Cancer Project. All published books will provide hours of entertaining reading for children in hospitals all around Australia, and the $2480 raised will support research into improving treatments of childhood cancers. Many thanks to all involved and especially Mrs Karina Allen, our dedicated library assistant, for the many hours spent organising this worthwhile day.Adrienne GillinghamTeacher Librarian

It has been an exciting week this week at Toormina High School. Over the weekend seven students completed their scuba diving course with Dr Willhoite. This is a first for Toormina High School. Well done students and Dr Willhoite (photo of our students, right).Yesterday we also held our second formal assembly for 2018. With student performances and awards it was a great celebration of achievement. Our student leaders ran the assembly. The focus was on recognising our refugee students as this week is National Refugee Week. One of the performances was an African dance by a group of current and former students. It was great to see the student audience respond so positively to the dancers. On Wednesday we had 30 students from our partner primary schools, Boambee PS, Bonville PS, Crossmaglen PS, Toormina PS and William Bayldon PS and Toormina High School teams participating in Write a Book in a Day. Students started work at 8.00am and after a full day of writing and illustrating a book, finished at 8.00pm. Thank you for the superb effort of the staff and students involved.I have noticed recently that there has been an overall decline in our uniform due to the cold weather. I ask that all parents support our school by ensuring that all students are dressed in correct uniform for school each day.Paul HumphreyPrincipal

Some our students are participating in a Mindfulness program this term called Brain Break. Mindfulness is paying attention on purpose to our experiences as they happen with kindness, curiosity and flexibility. Scientific evidence suggests that mindfulness interventions improve attention, self-control, emotional resilience and wellbeing. Laura McRae, Head Teacher Wellbeing

Your P&C Pie Drive order will be sent home with your student or can be picked up on Wednesday, July 4, from the school 2pm - 3:45pm,

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner have pced by their children/ward when Online. This third topic focuses on protecting your child’s digital reputation.

Protecting your child’s digital reputation Children, especially during their teenage years, learn the importance of their reputation as a part of growing up. Offline, a child’s reputation can be established through behaviour in the classroom and the playground, their treatment of friends, and academic, artistic or sporting achievements. Your child’s online reputation is defined by both the content they post about themselves and what others post about your child. Tagged photos, blog posts and social networking interactions will all shape how your child is perceived online and offline. A poor digital reputation can affect friendships, relationships and future job prospects. Children can protect their digital reputation by: * Thinking before they post. Does everything about their life really need to be online? How might this affect them in the future? * Setting their profile to private and checking privacy settings regularly to make sure default options haven’t changed. This will allow them to control who sees what they post online. Visit the eSafety website for more information on how to protect your child’s privacy online. The eSafety website has a section on games, apps and social networking with step-by-step instructions to control your settings for each social networking platform. * Keeping an eye on photos tagged by friends. Even if your child’s profile is private, the content friends post might be available for the world to see. Some social media sites allow users to approve tags before they are attached to their profile. If you or your child wants to learn more about digital reputation issues, you can visit the eSafety website. esafety.gov.au

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner have published a series of newsletter articles to support parents/carers to understand many of the issues faced by their children/ward when online. This third topic focuses on protecting your child’s digital reputation.

Toormina High School has a Robotics Group which would benefit from the skills of our extended school community.

If you (or a relative) would be interested in joining our team to assist our students, we can utilize skills in all sorts of areas, as this team will also be fundraising and participating in

competitions. Please contact Greg Driscoll, TAS Teacher at school for more information.
