By Dean Haakenson

I’ve been a Downtown Sacra-mento Flâneur for a long time. I bought a cheap house in Brod-erick some six years ago, and thankfully, I still find myself able to walk the three miles into downtown to my workplace. I’ve seen many of the same charac-ters on these sweet sidewalks, some of which are obviously homeless; pulling carts, holding signs… and some who just seem different from the average people in your neighborhood; yelling at the heavens, body cloths and skin a bit more grimy than is fashion-able… Do they have a home? Are they hungry? Are they lonely? Is it my responsibility to help them if they need help? I’ve reconciled my politics to believe that YES, the responsibility of a success-ful society to care for its most unemployable, weak, displaced, and mentally ill, or potentially violent, is a matter more import-ant than however we may feel personally about said vulnerable fellow citizens.

With these thoughts in mind, I’ve organized a fundraiser for the regional homeless services pro-vider Sacramento Steps Forward (sacramentostepsforward.org). Because, on top of having a jovial conversation (more important than money to some of our lone-lier fellow sidewalkers, I’d like to think), or giving a few bucks to your neighborhood homeless guy, services to the needy are arguably best provided in an organized set-ting, such that SSF offers. Among their services are advo-

cacy, assistance and resource in-formation to all who need it, and their Winter Sanctuary program facilitates our most vulnerable getting to shelters in our coldest months. Jay Eisenberg’s SoHo Entertainment kindly booked this at the historic Starlite Lounge (formerly Townhouse, now renovated, serving food, at 1517 21st st). A fitting venue, we’ll play in the sizable upstairs. I’m grateful that some of North-ern California’s best songwrit-ers and bands agreed to donate their time: Joe Kye voted “Art-

ist Of The Year” at 2014 Sam-mies), Guero, Felsen and John Elliott (both traveling from San Francisco), Pomegranate, Nice Monster, Justin Farren (and his band), and your own Be Brave Bold Robot closing out the night. This collection of lyrically driv-

en music will display elements of Rock, Pop, and Americana in satisfying balance. And to boot,

on a recent walk, I ran into Mark Bell aka Mark The Hobo, a kind homeless man who is known for his poetry about homelessness, and who is writing some poems for the event, which either he or I will read MC style. See you at the Starlight Lounge Oct. 30.

Letter to the editorThe following was a let-

ter first addressed to Con-gresswoman Doris Mat-sui: Rather than simply move

west Sac’s Merkley Ave-nue post office to South Port and thus highly an inconvenience for many seniors and businesses, please consider these al-ternatives: 1. Buying either adjacent lot: east or west, expand-ing Merkley Avenue’s Post Office’s customer parking, post office delivery trucks’ turnaround space2. Buy up lot for sale across from the old Hol-lywood Hardware and consider razing existing businesses and expanding current Bank of America parking lot for both bank and post office customers3. Old Hollywood Hard-ware store could be con-verted into an expansion of the Merkley Avenue post office, solving park-ing problems and expand-ing the customer service area. Retain as a neighborhood

post office, please.Thank you, Congress-

woman Matsui,

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Bridge of SpiesThe MPAA has rated this PG-13DreamworksSKG and

Twentieth Century Fox offer Steven Spielberg’s cloak and dagger, cold war, real life saga “Bridge of Spies”. The former in-surance attorney James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks), whose career of remark-able international negoti-ation skills began with a tenuous exchange of pris-oners is brought to life in this movie. The head of the firm where Donovan works, Thomas Watters, Jr. (Alan Alda) recruits Donovan for a thankless job; defending a KGB in-telligence officer, Rufolf Abel (Mark Rylance), re-cently captured by the CIA in New York City. The pragmatic painter Abel had been sending US military secrets to Russia. Donovan did not relish

the assignment, but his firm had no idea that he would then do his job to the very best of his abil-ity, with due diligence of making sure that the clearly guilty man was given every opportunity allowed by the law in the United States. His col-leagues are stunned that he would perform the task so altruistically, since the accused was clearly an enemy of the USA. Dono-van clinged to the ideals

Matías Bombal’s Hollywood

established into law in the Constitution of the United States. The mov-ie depicts, according to the screenplay by Ethan and Joel Coen (with Matt Charman), how hated he becomes, and that his life is in danger. Riding the elevated train in the city, passengers stare at him with a scowl as they look up and see him, after having just seen his pho-to in the evening editions. He successfully, and

quite surprisingly ar-ranges for a long impris-onment rather than a death sentence for Abel when he argues to the Supreme Court that it would be wise to keep him in case of the future need to possibly trade him back to the USSR in case a U.S. citizen or soldier is

captured by Russia. That very opportunity presents itself when U-2 spy plane pilot Francis G. Powers (Austin Stowell) is shot down over Soviet soil. Donvan is asked to ne-

gotiate a trade of the two men, secretly, on his own, as the U.S. government will not officially sanction his acting on the behalf of the USA. True to his pur-suit of justice and love of country, he accepts the risk and is sent to Berlin, where he is to “unofficial-ly” meet with Russian leaders to negotiate the trade, while shadowed by the CIA. It becomes more complicated when Don-van notes that a U.S. cit-izen in East Berlin, Fred-eric Pryor (Will Rogers) is also captured by the German police trying to escape to West Berlin, so he wants to land two for one. This movie is an excel-

lent example of Holly-wood at its best at ev-ery level. Great writing, Spielberg’s ability to make images so memora-ble that they linger in our mind, great photography by Janusz Kaminski and a good score by Thomas Newman, are all super-lative throughout. This movie reminded me much of the feel of Martin Ritt’s movie version of John Le

Carre’s “The Spy Who Came In from the Cold” of 1965. Hanks is effec-tive in this, his fourth film with Spielberg, and great to see Alan Alda on the screen, even so brief-ly. Many of the locations are the actual places in New York, Germany and Poland. This will make for an excellent time at the movies, put it on your list of pictures to see.

FreeheldThe MPAA has rated this PG-13Summit Entertainment,

A Lionsgate Company, offers a cinematic ver-sion of the true story of Lieutenant Laurel Hes-ter. Played by Julianne Moore, Hester is a po-licewoman in New Jersey whose struggle with can-cer brings into focus the need for her to be able to assign her pension bene-fits to her domestic part-ner, also a woman. This was without precedent in her New Jersey city, and the long battle for equality before the city officials, whilst her can-cer began to rob her of life, is at the core of this movie with some fine performances. The movie begins with our introduc-tion to Lt. Hester, work-ing on a drug bust. We see that she is efficient

and respected by her fel-low officers. Not wishing to expose

her sexual preference at her workplace, or even with her police partner, she travels out of state to find some sort of social life. Following a volley-ball league meeting she meets Stacie, played by Ellen Page. Ellen Page’s mannerisms and gender bending appearance re-minded me of the “look” and gestures of the infant terrible of the pop music world, Justin Bieber. Stacie is much young-

er that Laurel, yet the two women grow in mu-tual respect and even-tually decide to get a home together. Their relationship is tried by those types of growing pains found in any rela-tionship. Laurel is more controlling than the Sta-cie and each have differ-ent goals for themselves and their hopes for each other. Laurel’s profes-sional need to hide her sexuality at work also causes much frustration to the younger Stacie. Laurel’s police partner, Dane Wells, is played by the always good Michael Shannon, here in a more human role than he is usually cast. He sneaks in and almost steals the picture with his great performance. As Laurel’s cancer gets

worse, she appeals di-rectly to the city free-holders for the ability to be able to transfer her pension to her domestic partner. She is repeated-ly denied. Up to this point, the

movie is relatively se-rious in nature as the story reflects their grow-

ing relationship, and in-creasing issues of Lau-rel’s decaying health. The arrival of actor Steve Carell playing the Jewish gay activist Steven Gold-stein livens and lightens the mood, but quickly becomes annoying. Gold-stein brings protestors and drums-up a media circus to put pressure on the city’s freeholders about this case, draw-ing national attention to the little New Jersey City. The real-life events on which this picture is based are compelling. The performances of Ju-lianne Moore and the riv-eting Michael Shannon further the proof of mas-tery of their craft. Hans Zimmer’s score is appro-priate and pleasant. The movie itself howev-

er, no matter how com-pelling the story and performances, does not hold up well overall on initial viewing. It is a movie I wanted to like, but was just not overly impressed with. It seems the ideal formula for the forthcoming Oscar race, where generally a great actress, which Ms. Moore most certainly is, plays a personage with a termi-nal illness, thus gaining the sympathy audiences and the voting peers of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Scienc-es to vote in her favor. This has happened over and over in the past, and if there’s anything you can rely on, even in Hol-lywood, it is the adher-ence to doing the same thing again that worked before. Worth seeing for some fine acting, but it might have been better overall.
