One month after the release of their debut album, ‘If You Leave’, Daughter headline The Old Fire Station. The 3-year-old indie folk band originates from London and initially showcased the solo work of Elena Tonra. Now a trio - with the addition of guitarist Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella - the band were signed by 4AD.

The band’s music features on various adverts and in several television series’ including The Vampire Diaries and Grey’s Anatomy. Tonra was Inspired by her grandfather’s Ir ish folk singing and brought up l istening to the l ikes of Dylan, Neil Young, Bowie, and Blondie. She was exposed to a variety of styles from a

young age. Consequently, the sounds echoing from Daughter’s latest tracks are reminiscent of a cross between Sigur Rós and Emmy The Great, with characteristics of several different genres.

The Old Fire Station per formance wil l showcase the sombre group’s latest album tracks and some of their better-known singles. The ominous music consumes Tonra’s gossamer tones and the eerie album promises to translate well to a l ive per formance.

Don’t miss out on the up close and personal per formance from the next big thing.

BU FALCONS MAkE NATIONALS FOR THE FIRST TIME!

TRY YOUR HAND AT SkYDIVING w I T H B O U R N E M O U T H R A G !

More than 50 different UK universities attended the British Cheerleading Association (BCA) National competition. The Falcons competed at level 3 in the all-gir l competition and were up against 10 other universities.Performing in front of around 3000 people and 5 judges, the girls had just 2 minutes and

30 seconds to show off their skills. They were under a lot of pressure but their hard work paid off in a fantastic routine of back tucks, splits, pyramids, dancing, and crazy stunts. The cheerleaders were marked on their performance, level of difficulty, creativity, visual effect, spirit, synchronisation, as well as technique, stamina and entertainment… So there’s a lot to think about. This is the Falcons first ever competition and the team are proud of their achievement, making a real impression on other universities.

We think i t ’s a great way for you to get around.

However we want you to be as safe as poss ible and keep your bike safe too. So here are our top 3 t ips:

L ights and locks can be bought in the Students’ Union shops on both campuses.

The National Union of Students’ (NUS) National Conference is one of the biggest year ly events in the calendar for Students’ Unions across the country. The event consists of 3 days debating and vot ing on new pol icy and work for NUS, networking with other unions, and elect ing the new NUS Pres ident and Vice Pres idents.

Louise Bryant, SUBU Pres ident, attended with 4 elected delegates f rom BU to represent the 17,000 students we have here and inf luence important decis ions made at the event.

The conference was f i l led with excit ing debate, enthusiasm, pass ionate manifestos, a

Pres ident ial elect ion with an inanimate object as a candidate, and some controversy too (to f ind out more take a look at twitter #nusnc13).

There were some great motions passed to improve student’s l ives including promoting the publ ic value of higher education, accredit ing good placements, support for international students, and transparency and fairness in student f inance, so look out for the impact of this at BU over the coming year.
