JICA Trainees Discover Special Needs Children Education System In Japan (Contd)…
“We observed that most of the games are designed to
encourage and attract the special needs children to play with normal students while having more fun and making it more enjoyable. This creates very strong psychological contract between special needs children and normal children since no one feels any differences while exercising games.” “We believed that it is our utmost responsibility and duty to utilize & practice these techniques in Sri Lankan
special needs children to create better environment for them in the society. Taking this opportunity we have proposed a pilot project to implement in the Sri Jayawardenapura and Kalutara Zonal Education divisions.” “Finally we must thank JICA Sri Lanka office in giving us this rare opportunity and also our special gratitude to all staff attached to the training centers in Japan who gave us heartfelt cooperation during our stay, said Rasika Lasanthi and Pubudu Sureka De Silva.

Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), rugby coaches
Yuri Ito and Makoto Mori assigned to the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) conducted a coaching camp in collaboration with the visiting Japanese National Women’s Rugby Team. This coaching camp was conducted at the Colombo Race Course Grounds on 12th October 2017, ahead of the Rugby Sevens Tournament held in Sri Lanka.Japanese National Women’s Rugby Team Players spent their valuable time training Sri Lankan women rugby players, with the aim of enhancing their rugby skills and performance levels. At present, SLRFU is paying much attention towards the development of women’s rugby, since the young women currently engaged in the game lack much needed experience and exposure to high quality rugby.
The JOCV volunteers (who are conversant in both Japanese and Sinhala) planned the event and helped out whenever translation from one language to another was necessary. They also made Japanese name tags for Sri Lankan players and Sinhala name tags for Japanese players for the purpose of easy identification.Yuri Ito commented” I am most grateful for the Japanese team’s devotion and kind support to SLRFU. I hope these girls will be future champions”.

JICA Volunteers Caring For The Elderly
In the light of the increase in Sri Lanka’s aging population, it is becoming more
and more important to ensure that its future senior citizens stay healthy. With this in mind, the JICA Volunteer Program has, for over a decade, dispatched volunteers in support of the elderly, in order to ensure that they live healthy lives, whilst remaining productive and enjoying a high quality of life.
The JICA Volunteer Program’s activities in support of senior citizens of Sri Lanka has been conducted mainly in collaboration with the National Secretariat for Elders (NSFE). Most of the activities conducted by volunteers in this field are conducted through senior citizens’ committees (at divisional and grama-niladari level) or at elders’ homes and daycare centers. Whilst the aim of conducting such activities is to improve and sustain the physical and mental health of the elderly, a secondary objective of non-communicable disease prevention and transfer of knowledge to caregivers (e.g. those in charge of elder’s homes, family members of elders, and
workshops on the subject of caring for the elderly. These workshops are conducted for the purpose of educating members of elders societies, developing skills of field officers and the staff of elders’ homes and day centers . Together with local resource persons, JICA volunteers (in fields such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy) also contribute towards these workshops.
other stake holders), is also achieved through these activities.
Typical activities conducted by volunteers for the benefit of the elderly include: conducting physical exercise programs, monitoring body mass index (BMI), and providing advice on diet, healthy lifestyles and personal hygiene. Physical exercise programs conducted by volunteers are aimed at keeping muscles, bones, blood circulation and minds in tune. Volunteers use creative means such as fun games, popular local music etc. in order to motivate and get elders to participate in such physical activity. Through these programs, elders have learned the importance of exercising and following healthy life styles. Volunteers also conduct
