branches, the Newark True

Core Credit Union branch-

es, the Hopewell Federal

lefield Oil for allowing us to

almost double our counter-

top kettles in their Duke &

don’t have enough to eat.

42 million Americans — including 13

million children — lived in households

that were food insecure, meaning

there was limited or uncertain access

to enough food to support a healthy

life.

Households with children were more

likely to be food insecure than those

without children. Want to know more?

to meet the most basic needs of those

struggling in poverty in our communi-

ty.

Did you know?

According to Feeding America®, even

in the world’s greatest food-producing

nation, children and adults face pov-

erty and hunger in every county

across America. In 2015:

42 million people struggle with hun-

ger in the United States, including 13

million children. 5.4 million seniors

minutes long depending on the weath-

er and the ages of the children partici-

pating. We started here at The Salva-

tion Army for the first week, and then

traveled onto Coble Park in Little Tex-

as, Hebron Park in Hebron, Log Pond

Apartments in Newark, Miller Park in

Utica, Newark Townehomes in New-

ark, and wrapped up at Ryan-Branden

Park at Buckeye Lake on August 8th.

We held 19 sessions, spoke with 262

people, and gave away 310 gifts. We

were able to teach the kids (and some

adults) some new songs (with hand

motions), do some crafts, play some

games, learn a little science, and learn

valuable lessons from the VBS materi-

al.

The kids and parents were given Sal-

vation Army water bottles, coloring

sheets of the Bible characters, with

crayons, kites, program brochures

and twice sent home invitations to join

us for VBS Sunday on August 18th.

We also invited everyone in Church

and everyone at the Advisory Board

meeting to bring children or grand-

This summer, The Salvation Army in

Newark took on the challenge by

THQ, "by addressing a new work, in

new places, in new ways, for new peo-

ple,"

We let the Lord lead us with an adap-

tation of Groups' Maker Fun Factory

VBS. We chose this program after a

successful year using this material in

Day Camp. With a little work, and

whole lot of prayer, we edited the

content to make the whole thing porta-

ble in order to reach more families

that perhaps struggle financially with

a means to enroll their children in

summer programs or lack the trans-

portation to do so. Most we spoke to

said that transportation was their big-

gest challenge.

Each session was between 60 to 90

children and their back-packs for a

blessing and sing the VBS songs with

us.

At VBS Sunday on August 18th, we

provided a great VBS snack after the

service. Our intention with the mobile

VBS was to have at least five people

join us for Church and five more seek

other services. We do know of one

family that came to Food-o-rama be-

cause they heard it from us. Please

continue to hold all the families that

we have met in our travels in prayer.

It will be quite awhile before we de-

termine if any of these children signed

up to participate in other programs,

but we will keep you all posted.

Thank you everyone for your support!

Thank you for your donations—please keep them coming!

With 'heart to God and hand to man', The Salvation Army

strives to meet the basic needs of all who come seeking help.

Taking immediate care of the basic human needs of food,

shelter, clothing, and safety is an important first step in the

development of a more positive and permanent life change in

the people we help. It is essential to note that at no time will the

participation in spiritual activities be required as a condition for

receiving needed services. All service is given in the name of

Jesus for meeting human needs and caring for hurting persons

is in and of itself valued and is a spiritual ministry.
