Emeritus Professor Dr. Harry Miller

An American who became a

BosnianA teacher of mathematics and researcher, together with his wife, Naza, who died in 2001, made a highly significant contribution to the field of math science in our country.

He has published 86 research papers in more than 20 international journals in 11 countries and counting. In the interview for our newsletter Dr. Miller revealed how he came to Bosnia and what gives him enthusiasm to teach at the age of 76. Prof. Dr. Harry Miller is also recognized as a Foreign Member of Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and has been engaged at IUS since 2011.

How did you come to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and why did you decide to stay until today? My late wife, Naza Tanović is the reason I came to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Naza and I met at graduate school in Chicago in 1963, where we studied mathematics. We fell in love and soon after graduation we decided to continue our life in Bosnia. Now, I am also in love with this country and, after Nazas’ death, my daughter Lejla and I continue to live in Bosnia. Because of my late wife I still live here. I want to work and do good things for the people of Naza’s country.

You came to Bosnia and Herzegovina for the first time in 1969, when you were 30 years old, what were your first impressions, and did you find it difficult to adapt to the new environment? It was not strange to me. I continued to do all the things I did in America. I was jogging every morning and yes, most of the people looked at me as strange, but that did not bother me. The system here was different but that also did not bother me. Naza was my main reason for everything; it was not overly difficult.

Particularly interesting is that you had a chance to leave Bosnia and Herzegovina at the start of the 1992-1995 war

and your wife and you decided to stay, what was the reason? The war was raging in front of our eyes, and we, like many others were completely unprepared. Naza was a patriot, she was saying; “If everyone goes, the country will fall”. So I told to her that I am not young anymore to take a gun and go fight, but I would stay on one condition, if our daughters stay in USA – our children are more important than the adults. The US Embassy called us to leave Bosnia. We refused. So Bob Simon with “CBS NEWS” came to Sarajevo to make a film about me – the only American who stayed in Bosnia after the war started.

You are an intellectual and a person with many years of experience around the world. Can you tell us more about your recent scientific work?I have published 86 research papers in more than 20 international journals in 11 countries. A.J. Ostaszewski from the London School in Economics is my partner in the new scientific work I am doing. It was presented at the “Real Analysis” conference, in June in St. Olaf in the USA. Interesting to mention is that this conference will be held in 2016 at IUS.

You had opportunity to teach students around the world, is there something special about the students that you have an opportunity to teach at IUS?All students are the same, there are always those in first rows who want to study and those who just think when the break will happen to go out and smoke. Many Bosnian students are traumatized due to economic situation in Bosnia, they are in constant fear of not finding a job or they just lack of enthusiasm.

And finally, what would you say to the readers, especially young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina?Life is hard, it has always been, but do not wait. Options are at every corner, become passionate and use them. Don’t do something only because all others do so. You need to be the change that you want to see in the world.
