COUNCIL ELECTIONS District and Citywide Councils offer Parents an Opportunity to Shape
Education Policy
325 Seats are Open for Election All Parents are Encouraged to Run
for a Seat
NEW YORK ndash New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Farintildea
today announced the beginning of the 2017 Community and Citywide
Education Council election cycle and encouraged all public school
parents to consider running for a seat so they can make a significant
impact on their childrsquos education and become a champion for school communities The
application period begins on February 9 and a citywide effort starts today to recruit eligible
parents Parents interested in becoming members of a Community or Citywide Education Council
should visit NYCParentLeadersorg for more information
Parents interested in learning more about the roles and responsibilities of the Community
and Citywide Education Councils should attend an information session The first of a
series of information sessions will take place at the Tweed Courthouse on February 13 at
6 pm
Between March 20 and April 21 Presidentsrsquo Councils in each district will host forums
for candidates to engage parents and parent leaders Officers of each schoolrsquos parent or
parent-teacher association will cast their ballots online between April 23 and May 9 On
May 15 the results will be posted online at NYCParentLeadersorg The newly elected
Education Council members will attend trainings and ongoing leadership development
sessions on their roles and responsibilities Trainings will be organized by the Division
of Family and Community Engagement

K from January 17-February 24 2017
You can list up to 12 choices on your Pre-K Applicationmdashremember to include the program code
and to consider many different program options All applications received by the February 24
deadline are treated the samemdashour application process is not first-come first-served
If you are interested in pre-K at a charter school or half-day and 5-hour NYCEEC pre-K

Network suggests that we revive the Healthy Hearts Valentines Day celebration thats been so
enjoyable in past years
If you are planning to provide treats for the children we kindly ask you to consider non-candy
healthy options that promote good nutrition as well as fun love and sharing
Some ideas for healthy treats you can make with the kids in the classroom or bring in include

This trolley tour covers two sites that honor Brooklynrsquos African-American history Green-Wood
Cemetery resting place for numerous notables and Weeksville a pre-abolition free black
community The trip starts by visiting Green-Wood gravesites of figures such as Margaret Pine
(1778ndash1857) the last woman to have lived as a slave in the state Susan Smith McKinney
Steward (1847ndash1918) the first black female doctor in New York and the artist Jean-Michel

The Museum at FIT draws from its permanent collection to highlight black designers and models

heritage living in the Western United States This exhibition explores Isamu Noguchirsquos

enter the Poston War Relocation Center in the Arizona desert hoping to contribute something

Brian Wade is an emerging playwright actor director performance artist and Brooklynite
Originally from Atlanta Georgia Brian attended both Valdosta and Georgia State University
before moving to New York to pursue film and theatre production In 2009 2010 amp 2012 Brian
produced successful Off Off Broadway stage readings of his highly anticipated script Colours
On the filmtelevision side of things Brian has written directed and produced two
critically acclaimed seasons of SubUrban Underground TV for Brooklyn Free Speech
and has a much anticipated feature film by the name of Canvas debuting at select film
festivals in early 2017
We are so happy to bring back this monthly event happening every second Saturday opening our
doors to all for a full day of free events February will be our most exciting yet as we launch a
very exciting project
Weeksville Transforming CommunityIn Pursuit Of Freedom a thought provoking collection-
based exhibition that explores the origins of one of the first free black communities in the
country
The opening will be accompanied by tours of the Historic Hunterfly Road Houses a screening of
Digging For Black Pride which chronicles the community centered archaeological dig of 1968
a family arts workshop BRICs Black TV Matters a screening of community produced shorts
and Voices of Crown Heights an oral history project in collaboration with our friends at the
Brooklyn Historical Society

produced successful Off Off Broadway stage readings of his highly anticipated script Colours
On the filmtelevision side of things Brian has written directed and produced two
critically acclaimed seasons of SubUrban Underground TV for Brooklyn Free Speech
and has a much anticipated feature film by the name of Canvas debuting at select film
festivals in early 2017
We are so happy to bring back this monthly event happening every second Saturday opening our

produced successful Off Off Broadway stage readings of his highly anticipated script Colours
On the filmtelevision side of things Brian has written directed and produced two
critically acclaimed seasons of SubUrban Underground TV for Brooklyn Free Speech
and has a much anticipated feature film by the name of Canvas debuting at select film
festivals in early 2017
We are so happy to bring back this monthly event happening every second Saturday opening our
doors to all for a full day of free events February will be our most exciting yet as we launch a
very exciting project

Registration for Brooklyn Botanic Gardens Childrens Garden spring (including a

served 6-8) and College Quest High School Enrichment (grades served 9-12)
Our 6 grade participants are recruited during their 5th grade school year We are delighted to

Brian Wade is an emerging playwright actor director performance artist and Brooklynite
Originally from Atlanta Georgia Brian attended both Valdosta and Georgia State University
before moving to New York to pursue film and theatre production In 2009 2010 amp 2012 Brian
produced successful Off Off Broadway stage readings of his highly anticipated script Colours
On the filmtelevision side of things Brian has written directed and produced two
critically acclaimed seasons of SubUrban Underground TV for Brooklyn Free Speech
and has a much anticipated feature film by the name of Canvas debuting at select film
festivals in early 2017
We are so happy to bring back this monthly event happening every second Saturday opening our
doors to all for a full day of free events February will be our most exciting yet as we launch a
very exciting project
Weeksville Transforming CommunityIn Pursuit Of Freedom a thought provoking collection-
based exhibition that explores the origins of one of the first free black communities in the
country
The opening will be accompanied by tours of the Historic Hunterfly Road Houses a screening of
Digging For Black Pride which chronicles the community centered archaeological dig of 1968
a family arts workshop BRICs Black TV Matters a screening of community produced shorts
and Voices of Crown Heights an oral history project in collaboration with our friends at the
Brooklyn Historical Society

This trolley tour covers two sites that honor Brooklynrsquos African-American history Green-Wood

based exhibition that explores the origins of one of the first free black communities in the
country
The opening will be accompanied by tours of the Historic Hunterfly Road Houses a screening of
Digging For Black Pride which chronicles the community centered archaeological dig of 1968
a family arts workshop BRICs Black TV Matters a screening of community produced shorts
and Voices of Crown Heights an oral history project in collaboration with our friends at the
Brooklyn Historical Society

Self-Interned 1942 Noguchi in Poston War Relocation Center
Through January 2018 February 19 2017 marks the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 the notorious wartime
directive that authorized the internment of Japanese citizens and American citizens of Japanese
heritage living in the Western United States This exhibition explores Isamu Noguchirsquos
extraordinary decisionmdashdespite being exempt from internment as a resident of New Yorkmdashto
enter the Poston War Relocation Center in the Arizona desert hoping to contribute something

portrait various facets of Black American Life through satire art and activism
Brooklyn Free Speech Celebrates Black History
In conjunction with Weeksville Heritage Centers February exhibition In the Pursuit of Freedom
Brooklyn Free Speech will be on hand for a midday screening celebrating African-American
history and traditions Witness community produced shorts that portrait various facets of Black
American Life through satire art and activism Participate in the QampA to take part in this
ongoing and very relevant topic

Brian Wade is an emerging playwright actor director performance artist and Brooklynite
Originally from Atlanta Georgia Brian attended both Valdosta and Georgia State University
before moving to New York to pursue film and theatre production In 2009 2010 amp 2012 Brian
produced successful Off Off Broadway stage readings of his highly anticipated script Colours
On the filmtelevision side of things Brian has written directed and produced two
critically acclaimed seasons of SubUrban Underground TV for Brooklyn Free Speech
and has a much anticipated feature film by the name of Canvas debuting at select film
festivals in early 2017
We are so happy to bring back this monthly event happening every second Saturday opening our
doors to all for a full day of free events February will be our most exciting yet as we launch a
very exciting project
Weeksville Transforming CommunityIn Pursuit Of Freedom a thought provoking collection-
based exhibition that explores the origins of one of the first free black communities in the
country
The opening will be accompanied by tours of the Historic Hunterfly Road Houses a screening of
Digging For Black Pride which chronicles the community centered archaeological dig of 1968
a family arts workshop BRICs Black TV Matters a screening of community produced shorts
and Voices of Crown Heights an oral history project in collaboration with our friends at the
Brooklyn Historical Society

Registration for Brooklyn Botanic Gardens Childrens Garden spring (including a

HEAF HEAF is a college preparatory program that works with students who have a demonstrated
commitment to learning and help them to develop the intellectual and social skills they need to
thrive as they progress towards higher education HEAF offers free education and youth
development assistance that prepares our students for academic success Some of our
programming throughout the year includes High Expectations Middle School Enrichment (grades
served 6-8) and College Quest High School Enrichment (grades served 9-12)
Our 6 grade participants are recruited during their 5th grade school year We are delighted to
inform you that we now offer the application process to 5th grade students in Brooklyn As we
continue to expand we are able to serve more students

Brooklyn Free Speech Celebrates Black History
In conjunction with Weeksville Heritage Centers February exhibition In the Pursuit of Freedom
Brooklyn Free Speech will be on hand for a midday screening celebrating African-American
history and traditions Witness community produced shorts that portrait various facets of Black
American Life through satire art and activism Participate in the QampA to take part in this
ongoing and very relevant topic

FEATURED FILM amp TV ARTISTS
Brian Wade is an emerging playwright actor director performance artist and Brooklynite
Originally from Atlanta Georgia Brian attended both Valdosta and Georgia State University
before moving to New York to pursue film and theatre production In 2009 2010 amp 2012 Brian
produced successful Off Off Broadway stage readings of his highly anticipated script Colours
On the filmtelevision side of things Brian has written directed and produced two
critically acclaimed seasons of SubUrban Underground TV for Brooklyn Free Speech
and has a much anticipated feature film by the name of Canvas debuting at select film
festivals in early 2017
We are so happy to bring back this monthly event happening every second Saturday opening our
doors to all for a full day of free events February will be our most exciting yet as we launch a
very exciting project
Weeksville Transforming CommunityIn Pursuit Of Freedom a thought provoking collection-
based exhibition that explores the origins of one of the first free black communities in the
country
The opening will be accompanied by tours of the Historic Hunterfly Road Houses a screening of
Digging For Black Pride which chronicles the community centered archaeological dig of 1968
a family arts workshop BRICs Black TV Matters a screening of community produced shorts
and Voices of Crown Heights an oral history project in collaboration with our friends at the
Brooklyn Historical Society
