One of the common themes that is discussed and explored in the grades is self-esteem. Self-esteem can be defined as ‘confidence in one’s own worth or abilities or self-respect’. One of my saddest experiences as a teacher is observing how some learners with low self-esteem value themselves according to how many ‘likes’ or ‘followers’ they have. Low self-esteem is non-discriminate; it affects many teenagers at some point and sadly, many adults too. The causes of low self-esteem - although not limited to - are the following: Systematic punishment, neglect and abuse Failing to meet the standards of parental expectations Failing to meet peer group standards Bullying and intimidation Being on the receiving end of other people’s stress An absence of praise, warmth and affection Being the odd one out at home or at school Distorted beliefs about oneself Low self-esteem has so many negative consequences for our teenagers. It limits them from trying new activities and exploring new sides to themselves. It stunts personal growth and creates an avoidance-type behavioural pattern which can then continue into adulthood. Negative emotions and behaviour such as tension, anxiety, stress, unhappiness, depression, cutting and suicidal ideation are all commonly linked to teens with low self-esteem. These are frightening for both parents and teens! Some tips for parents: Encourage open and honest communication and provide a loving, accepting and supportive home. This can often help to reverse low self-esteem. Be an active participant in your child’s emotional journey. In chatting with many of my learners, their biggest wish is that their families would spend more time together, laugh more and have real conversations. They long to feel wanted! They want their parents to be their biggest supporters and to be told that they will always be there for them. Buying them ‘things’ has never come up in our conversations! Be bold parents. Know your child’s friends. Yes, it may be “uncool” but it is awesome parenting! Negative peer influences can have devastating long-term effects on children. Be a confident role-model for your child! Be truly happy - too many days are wasted comparing and judging ourselves to others and wishing we were something we are not. We all have our own gifts and it is only when we accept everything we are, that we will truly succeed. Have an awesome week, you deserve it! Newsletter 09/2017 16 March 2017 Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners

The Life Skills curriculum starts off each year, for Grade 8 to Grade 12, with a focus on personal development.

The causes of low self-esteem - although not limited to - are the following:

Systematic punishment, neglect and abuse Failing to meet the standards of parental

expectations Failing to meet peer group standards Bullying and intimidation Being on the receiving end of other people’s

stress An absence of praise, warmth and affection Being the odd one out at home or at school Distorted beliefs about oneself

Low self-esteem has so many negative consequences for our teenagers.

Yours sincerely V LESSER (MRS)
