Rummage Sale May 18th As you tackle “spring cleaning” chores at home this month, keep in mind that the rummage sale will take place May 18th. Save the quality stuff your family has outgrown or no longer needs for the sale. This is one of the major fundraisers of the school year and will be organized this year by Laurie Mitchell. There will be more information about the rummage sale in next month’s Charter Notes. Make the World a Better Place The fifth grade Girl Scouts are working on making this school a better place, by reminding everyone to pick up their garbage, not only people at the school but everywhere. Do, please, help us make the world a better place! At Sebastopol Charter, people throw garbage on the ground a lot. There are quite a few reasons why you shouldn’t do this. Animals may come onto the campus and eat it, which might make them sick. Also, plastic and other materials don’t decompose, so if you throw things on the ground it hurts the earth. If you see someone throwing away trash on the ground, remind them to pick it up. If you see someone bring a dog on campus, remind them that dogs are not allowed, partly because dogs create mess. Please remember to follow the rules. Do not mix trash and recycling. Different things go in different bins. Paper, bottles, and cans go in the recycling bin. Sticky food and other non-clean items go in the trash. ~Shayla Rose Brown and Stella Kampmann, 5th Grade

6th Grade Community Service The 6th grade recently decided to help the community by picking up trash for the city of Sebastopol who generously lets us use their parks for our school. We picked up 34 pounds of trash and were proud of our accomplishment. We found plastic plates, spoons, wrappers, bottle caps, bottles, a ketchup bottle, and strangest of all—a wasabi packet! ~Will, August, and Kai for the 6th Grade

Charter Foundation Seeking a New Board Member The Charter Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission support Sebastopol Independent's providing of a public Waldorf-inspired education, is looking to fill a vacancy on its board of directors. Since 1995 we have raised money through fundraising events, parent pledge donations and grants in order to pay for school facilities, supplement teachers’ salaries, and enhance the curriculum for Charter School students. The Foundation also owns and manages our downtown campus, which it leases to the Charter School and three retail tenants. We are looking for qualified and committed individuals who are willing to serve for a minimum three-year term. We are seeking prospective members who are task and deadline oriented, good communicators, and able to devote approximately 10 hours a month on any number of tasks. Prior experience working in non-profit organizations or managing others is helpful, as is a background in finance, land acquisition and development, or fundraising and community outreach. Candidates should be familiar with, and generally supportive of, the Waldorf pedagogical approach, but are otherwise invited to bring to the Board their own vision for the school and ideas for realizing it. Interested applicants should contact Bob Haroche at [email protected] or (707) 206-7842.

Lean In! (Can You Help?) The school’s Development Committee has formed over the course of this year and we are actively soliciting more parents to step forward to help in a variety of ways. Development work is defined as supporting the school and reaching out to include more community members in that effort. There are many ways to get involved - some that can be done at home, at your leisure, without even attending meetings. I would add, however, that our meetings are fun and usually involve baked goods prepared by yours truly.

Please take a moment to scan the list below and see if you can find a way to join in the rewarding work of working with the really fun and savvy development team. Maybe you have a skill, idea, or connection not listed. When you volunteer, you are never on your own – we believe in working together and not saddling one person with a whole event or committee. Contact Susan Olson if you are interested in stepping up to help. [email protected] or 824-9700 x306. We don’t know who you are unless you tell us! “Lean in!” Business Directory:

Mary's Pizza Fundraiser – Wednesday - April 24th It's a Pizza Party! On Wednesday, April 24th our school will receive 20% of sales generated by our school at Mary's Pizza in Sebastopol. What a delicious and easy way to raise money for our school! All you need to do is bring in the green flier (attached to Charter Notes) when you pay for your pizza, pasta, sandwiches, soups and salads. This offer is available for Dine-In, Take-Out, Delivery or Gift Card purchases. The fundraiser is for the whole day and you can give out fliers to your family and friends. Why not organize a pizza party night with several Charter School families? How about leftovers for Thursday’s lunch? Additional fliers are available in the office. Volunteer Corner Our thanks to Jacques Levy for electrical work at the school recently. He replaced the light fixture in the boys’ restroom at the main campus and repaired a hanging light in the Sunflower kindergarten. Faculty Lunches Thank you 8th grade parents for the delicious lunch in March. These lunches are an uplifting treat much appreciated by the teachers.

Poetry Corner

Cargo You enter life a ship laden with meaning, purpose and

gifts sent to be delivered to a hungry world.

And as much as the world needs your cargo, you need to give it away.

Everything depends on this. But the world forgets its needs,

and you forget your mission,

and the ancestral maps used to guide you have become faded scrawls on the parchment of dead

Pharaohs. The cargo weighs you heavy the longer it is held

and spoilage becomes a risk. The ship sputters from port to port and at each you ask:

“Is this the way?” But the way cannot be found without knowing the cargo, and the cargo cannot be known without recognizing there

is a way, and it is simply this:

You have gifts. The world needs your gifts.

You must deliver them. The world may not know it is starving,

but the hungry know, and they will find you

when you discover your cargo and start to give it away.
