NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS J Oral Maxillofac Surg 70:2945-2946, 2012 AAOMS WELCOMES NEW FELLOWS AND MEMBERS The House of Delegates elected 165 candidates to fellowship or membership at the 2012 annual meet- ing, and another 53 were elected to provisional fel- lowship or membership. Additionally, 63 provisional fellows and members were transferred to full mem- bership, having completed the required anesthesia evaluation. The second year of Allied Staff member- ship was also a huge success, with more than 1,000 staff members now sponsored by current AAOMS fellows, members and candidates. IMPORTANT CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT DEADLINES All annual meeting and dental implant conference attendees may access aaoms.org/mycme to evaluate the educational sessions they attended and record their CE credit. Annual meeting attendees may record their credit through December 31, 2012; dental im- plant conference attendees through March 4, 2013. No new entries will be allowed after those dates. Once recorded, continuing education credit transcripts may be accessed 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week. To access the Internet-based system, registrants must provide their last name (including any suffix such as Jr or Sr) and meeting badge ID number. READER’S CIRCLE GOES ONLINE-ONLY IN JANUARY 2013 Effective with the January 2013 issue of the Jour- nal, the Reader’s Circle will be available as an online- only continuing education program. The Reader’s Cir- cle will continue to offer two CDE/CME credits for each successfully completed examination. The fee for the online program is $40/examination. CLARIFICATION ON NEW AAOMS CAPNOGRAPHY REQUIREMENT The Office Anesthesia Evaluation Manual, 8 th edition and the anesthesia section of the Parame- ters of Care, version 5 include the requirement to monitor end-tidal CO 2 beginning in 2014, “unless precluded or invalidated by the nature of the pa- tient, procedure, or equipment.” Some AAOMS fel- lows and members found this phrase ambiguous and called headquarters to inquire if they were grandfathered from this requirement because they do not have ETCO 2 monitoring equipment. The intent of the new language is that all patients under moderate sedation, deep sedation, or general anes- thesia should be monitored for ETCO 2 unless pre- cluded or invalidated by the nature of the patient, procedure or equipment. There is no grandfather- ing clause. The January 2014 date provides suffi- cient time for AAOMS fellows and members to obtain the necessary equipment and experience to optimize the use of capnography in an open system. IN MEMORIAM George Savitsky, retired fellow, Ocean City, NJ 1924-2012 Dr. Savitsky passed away Sept. 4 at age 88 from pneumonia. He relinquished a professional football career after two championship seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles to attend dental school and com- plete his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He the only college football player since 1901 to be a four-time All-American and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991. Dr. Savitsky is survived by his wife, Doris, and five children. 2945
