MEMBER-SPEAKA huge thank-you goes out to all the community members and volunteers of Pankhudi who displayed their support for “Sahayata”, the Bihar flood relief collection drive conducted by Pankhudi( in association with GOONJ and few other help groups worked for the same cause) all over India from the 24th of September to the 4th of October 2008 .

As we all know, last month Bihar had to face the wrath of the Kosi river. It wrecked havoc in North Bihar leaving millions of people homeless and without basic necessities like food, clothes and shelter. Even though a month has passed by, the situation is still very grim and millions of people are badly affected and have nowhere to go. We, Pankhudians have deep empathy towards the victims and came up with ideas to help them in various possible ways. It was a great time to remind ourselves of those who are less fortunate and the downtrodden. We felt that it was time to do our bit for the society we live in and in turn for our country.

The event “Sahayata”, hosted by Pankhudi was led by volunteers at all chapters (Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune). Donations included

Dry ration: rice, pulse, gram, biscuits, milk powder.etc.Also utility items like candles & matchboxes, torches & batteries, storage & cooking utensils etc were also donated.A large number of donations included clothing items like sarees, bedsheets, shirts etc.

The supplies were collected by individual chapters, sorted out according to the respective categories and packed in gunny bags by our volunteers and were sent to the respective coordinators in each city . All the supplies collected by Pankhudi were shipped to Bihar through GOONJ (www.goonj.com) who has actively been working on this front for a long time.

~Pankhudi would like to specially thank the following non-rep Coordinators Vaibhav, Lipika and Arvind from Bangalore,Naval, Nitin, and Amit from Delhi. Jeevan and Sajani from Hyderabad.Yogesh, Amit and Abhishek from Mumbai. Amruta, Murthy and Sumit from Pune. Neeraj Kumar, Gaurav Bajpai and Gaurav Ranjan from Kolkata for their efforts put into making the drive a success.

Also a special mention to the following people who have shown exceptional coordination and support .Yatin, Rashmi, Shahzad, Krunal, Anvesha, Ram Kumar .They were also well supported by Pankhudi Finance Head, Aditi Kulkarni and PR&Resource Head Surya Adavi.

For the detailed collection analysis of Sahayata please check out our next newsletter.

MEMBER-SPEAK

“Each one teach one”. This is one slogan I have very firmly believed in since the time I was in school. Since the time I got a chance to do some community service in school, I always believed that as good citizens we should always give back something to the society. Since I now have the time to serve and give back something to the society I joined Pankhudi India. And its been a wonderful experience.

I was really excited when I enrolled for Pankhudi. I loved teaching and interacting with kids. At the same time I was a bit skeptical. Would I enjoy working at this organization? How would the people be? Questions like these kept cropping up. I went for my first class on Friday the 26th of September 2008 at 6 pm. I met Ms Smriti Dey and she was the first person I interacted with face to face in Pankhudi. The classes were just going to begin that day after a long break. And I was informed that I would be teaching the “Senior” batch. As we walked the gully that lead to the classroom, kids thronged Smriti asking her if they had a class today. It was a wonderful sight. ”Didi, aaj hamara class hai?” and Smriti answered each and everyone patiently.I caught my first glimpse of the Kurla classroom and it was a wonderful one.Filled with colorful benches and posters,it was one place I would love to teach in.Smriti,I and a few others started collecting the kids together and asking the respective students to come and attend their class. This took quite some time and I realized that this task of collecting students is indeed a very difficult one and eats away a lot of our time. Some of them forgot their notebooks, some their pens. One even ran away because he forgot to drink milk and vowed to come back soon. Finally all of us gathered in the classroom to begin our class. There were about 20 students.I started off with English and simple sentences like “What is your name?”,”What do your parents call you?” etc were taught and made to be written down. Teaching these kids requires a lot of patience and determination. It’s a tough task to make them understand everything. Some of them are very slow learners and sometimes one has to personally go and sit with them in order to make them understand. I also observed that some of them are very keen and quick learners. And then there is always the notorious lot who come only to trouble those who are studying. So,it’s a tough task to deal with all kinds of kids. But they are a truly wonderful lot who enthusiastically answer each and every question that is thrown to them. When I went on to Maths , they answered each and every question however tough it may be. I’m sure that if they are put on the right path, India has a very bright future ahead. One thing I made a note of is that its very important to improve the overall personality of these kids. One may be very educated but if he/she does not have a character, there is no use. So, We as Pankhudians should also focus on aspects of discipline. Among all these kids, there is one mentally handicapped kid called Vishal who comes and participates in everything inspite of his handicap.I had a great time teaching him last Friday. He laughs at everything he does and always considers himself a part of the crowd. He’s very determined to learn and doesn’t let his handicap come his way. Looking at such kids , one also tends to get a lot more determined and the will power to achieve something also increases multifold. This is what teaching at Pankhudi can do to a person.

Teaching at Pankhudi gives me a sense of satisfaction that I don’t get anywhere else.At the end of the day, when I head home, I feel I have done something worthwhile and it gives me a sense of happiness. I look forward to each Friday and I hope to give my best whenever I teach these kids and I hope that someday one of them can end up being India’s greatest.I also hope that I can contribute everything that I can to Pankhudi.I am glad that I’m working with people who are all focused on the same cause,to make these kids the best. There are so many underprivileged kids in our country who are not properly trained or educated. We are indeed very fortunate to make it to school and our parents have made sure that we received the right training that has made us whatever we are today.I am very happy to be associated with Pankhudi and I hope that we all can work together to make India 100% literate and the best.

Lessons

A sweet smile on their face,

Finding their path in life's maze…

Exploring things with innocent eyes,

To make their mark, each one strives!

If you dance, they dance along,

With you they will hum your song…

Always keen & eager to learn,

Teach your style – soft or stern!

But as you teach, you learn more,

There's more then bread on the winning shore!

From every little act, draw pleasure,

Cherish & put it in the little box of treasure…

Express yourself without hesitation,

Treat all with respect, no discrimination!

So what if hardships come your way?

Go ahead & face it, don't just stay!

As you tread you might stumble,

Just hold on but don't grumble!

What matters is your zest for life,

Be it small or big & wide!

Whether you finish or not,

Just begin the race with a dazzling start,

& on your way, you will win every heart..!
