Issue 27 Thursday 3rd September 2015

Engaging in Your Children’s Education National Literacy and Numeracy Week aims to raise community awareness of the importance of literacy and numeracy skills for all Australian

students.

Throughout this week we recognise and celebrate the achievements of parents, teachers, principals, and members of the wider community

who are making a difference to the development of literacy and numeracy skills in our students.

Parents and carers can have a big impact on their children’s education. Over 40 years, research tells us that how well children do at school has a lot to do with what happens at home. Parents are the first and most important influence on a child’s attitudes and values toward school and learning. By creating a home environment that encourages a continuous love of learning from an early age, you can help your child to achieve

positive outcomes throughout their schooling and beyond.

Being excited about National Literacy and Numeracy Week and engaging with your child as they take part in the week’s activities is one way to

foster this love of learning.

Everyone had a fun day yesterday dressing up as their favourite book character.

We had a special morning tea to celebrate our ES Staff who are vital members of the Launching Place Primary staff. Their roles are quite varied, from Jacqui and Audrey in administration; Sonia in Welfare; Chezelle as Chaplain as well as student wellbeing; Integration Aides Fiona, Naomi, Jaqui W, Paul and Glenn who also doubles as school handyman. Missing from the photo are our computer technicians Shane and Joe. They are definitely our super heroes!

ESO Week As parents we often hear and speak about the importance of reading and writing, however the importance of the development of a child’s oral language can sometimes

be misunderstood.

Developing each student’s oral language is one of the most important things that we do and this is essential to support their future learning. Students can only write and read as well as they can speak. Most learning is initially taught orally and this provides a significant reason for the importance of highly developed skills in speaking and listening which underpins learning across all areas of the

curriculum.

Some ways that you can assist your child/ren to enhance their ability to speak and use language are:

Encourage your child to use new words.

Talk about the meaning of unknown words that they hear or read.

As your child grows older make sure that you are making your language more interesting, your children will model what they hear.

Don’t allow your child to use baby language rather use interesting words and sentences.

Make sure that you talk to your child as much as possible.

Find out what your child thinks about the book they have read, items on the news, something happening in the family. Encourage

them to develop their thoughts and explain them fully.

In grade 5/6 we have begun our poetry unit. We have been learning about different types of poetry, poetic devices and figurative language used in poetry such as

metaphors, similes, alliteration, idioms, personification, onomatopoeia and hyperbole. Below are some of the poems we have written.

I am...

I am a Giraffe

I am an Eagle

I am a worn out puppy

I am a sleepy bear

I am a silver lining of a cloud

I am a ray of sunshine

I am a free butterfly

My smile is a row of pearls

I am a fast cheetah

My laugh is a musical

instrument

Aqua

It smells like the sea

And feels like precious stones

It looks like magic

Aqua is the sparkling eyes in the sky

By Tegan H

Blue

Blue is the sky

It smells clean

It looks like the school colour

It tastes like blueberries

It feels like clouds

Blue is watery eyes

By Zoe M

I am…

I am as tall as a mountain,

I am as friendly as a dog,

I am as smart as a dolphin,

I am as loud as an aeroplane,

I am as weird as a mime,

I am as annoying as a sibling,

I am as brave as a lion,

I am as handsome as a devil,

I am all of these things and more,

I am human.

It came out

As the truth came out,

I shielded my eyes.

While their eyes,

Were shielded by the truth.

Now they know,

But not just them, no,

Everyone around me.

They stared at me.

Then my friends walked off.

I lowered myself to the ground.

A tear ran down my face,

It went faster than the rain around me.

The crowd were still around me,

But they slowly left.

One by one,

Person by person.

But one didn’t leave.

And her words shot straight through me,

Like a bullet from a gun.

She looked at me,

‘I trust you.’

A Young Girl

My eyes are like heaven in blue

My hands are a soft as a baby’s skin

My lips are like a faded rose

My personality is like the sun setting

on the calm sea at night.

I can be as pretty as an angel

My eye lashes are as black as a raven.

I have skin as white as a cloud

I have as many freckles as Hundreds and Thou-

sands.

I’m as fit as an athlete,

I’m as fast as the desert wind.

My laugh is like an angel’s song.

My heart is as sweet as a lolly.

My smile is like the sun.
