Dear readers,

Welcome to the family and launch of Newrizons Magazine! When we started this magazine, we had a vision of sharing our experiences at the

center with you. We assigned our students the task to write the things they wanted you, our readers, to see. But many stories and articles later, that vision evolved.

Something that we as educators have noticed is many education systems are taking less and less priority in improving language skill in our next generation. That, however, is a mistake because we share our thoughts and ideas through language. What we know from cognitive psychology is that language processing also plays a major part in problem solving, decision making, and reasoning — all important for everyday tasks.

We hope to show you that writing and language skills are still important. Moreover, we hope to share, to recognize, and to inspire.

Seeing all these children’s faces every day reminds us that each and everyone of us has a bigger mission in life. We, as educators and seniors, are obligated to kindle and foster growth in our next generation.

The center tutors well over 400 students online, in-private, and in-center. We’ve got a lot going on. But that doesn’t mean we have to limit ourselves. Keeping this magazine running is for our students, for those who will grow on to reach bigger possibilities.

And this also for you, our readers, who care to show support not only for us, but also for our students. We hope this magazine will also inspire you.

Yours truly,

Anna YangJeff Nguyen

1. A - Z: Captain D’s Pure SoulWRITTEN BY DENNIS DOAN (8TH GRADE)

Amazing new technology was given to

Deven by God. Because Deven was a perfect

child, God bestowed him with the task to guard

his gift.

“Can I trust you?” God asked.

“Duh, of course you can,” Deven replied.

“Er, just like all human teenagers.”

“Farewell,” God said after giving Deven

technology to do virtually anything.

Getting an idea to bring peace to the

world, Deven then decided to use his mystical

equipment for mankind. Human kind needs a

hero, Deven thought. I shall fulfill that role.

Just then, Osama Bin Laden came from

the shore 30 miles away. Kinetic energy from his

movement caused Deven to move and detect

the presence. Literally out of nowhere, Deven

soccer kicked the Taliban leader to the shin.

Monsters were being killed and arrested in

seconds. Now Deven, the new hero, was being

called Captain D. Over seconds, Deven was

doing good things.

Panteneous, the evil demon hater, plotted

to kill Deven. Quietly, the demon plotted a way

to destroy Deven, and using his great power, he

put earth in an apocalyptic state.

Russians were tormented by terrifying

beasts. Seven-feet-tall rocky crystal monsters

with the strength to lift cars attacked, and Deven

struggled to defeat every one of them. They

came in hoards, blasting spears a million times

towards the snow.

2. Best Friends Forever, Except Not: How We Became FriendsWRITTEN BY JULIA LE (3RD GRADE)

One day in first grade,

we were picking up trash. A

girl named Claire bumped

into me. as she bumped into

me, I asked her, “You want to

be my friend?”

She said, “OK.”

Ever since first grade, we

were always friends. We had

lots and lots of fun together

but on January 1, she will be

moving.

But before she moves

I’m going to call her mother

for her email so I can

FaceTime. Even thought I can

FaceTime her I will still be very

sad.

So, I have until January 1

to have fun with her.

9

U.S. citizens were turned

into 4,000-feet-tall beings

capable of lifting the sun.

Violent actions were needed,

so Deven killed every single

being with his super fast laser

guns.

Wild actions from Deven

made God question his

decision.

“X-ray vision? If only I

could see through your pure

soul,” God said to himself.

Yellow blasts killed the

monsters, and then Deven

realized he was murdering

human beings. Zen was no

longer being achieved by

Deven…by killing innocents

he no longer had a pure soul,

and in the end God cursed

Deven and fixed his mistakes

by imprisoning him.

3. A - Z: The Zoo in My BedroomWRITTEN BY JULIA LE (3RD GRADE)

At a place where you can

sleep. Bedroom. Could be very

cozy. Deeply soft. Elephants are

too heavy for beds. For humans

only.

Giraffes break my ceiling.

How could they? I certainly don’t

know. Jaguars just jump on the

beds. Kids love sleeping in (on a

day like school).

Lions think “I’m so pretty.”

Monkeys like the leaves blown

inside. “Noooo!” Orangutans

are here!

Poop is in the bed because

babies took their diapers off.

Queens can’t sleep in this

territory!

Rhinos pick me up on their

horns. Snakes slither slowly

around the sofa. Tigers are my

new pets.

Unexpected,

Erin (my sister)

comes in. Vicious

animals roam

around her. Was

that my revenge? X-ray

pictures are torn up. Yo-yos

have been broken. Zebras scare

away my tigers.

4. Dear MommyWRITTEN BY ALEX (3RD GRADE)

5. My experiencesWRITTEN BY HARRIS NGUYEN (HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE)

My name is Harris Nguyen.

I was born on Sept. 15, 1996. I’m

currently 18 years old, and I’m

planning on majoring in chemistry in

college. I tend to be straightfoward

and honest with things, though I

maintain a clueless appearance, as I

am always questioning most things

whenever I lay my eyes of them.

I’ve only attended Newrizons

for about two months. Since

Saturday sessions are full, I go on

Fridays. My instructor is Jeff, and

the club I’m representing is English

(big shocker). I need a bit of tutoring

for my school work and possibly for

college as well.

My perspective of this tutoring

center is that it not only has great

service, but you’re also able to ask

your instructor questions relatable

to your own school work and relax a

bit during break time.

You create connections

with not only your peers but your

instructors as well.

I love my mom because she is nice and takes me to school. I give

bear hugs to my mom. On Christmas I can see Santa in the sky. He give me

presents because I’m good at writing letters. That’s my favorite thing to do.

On holiday, I eat a turkey because they’re so good for me and my whole

family in the house for dinner.

ESSAYS & MORE

I’m thankful for my family. For

example: my mom gave birth to me, so

without my mom, I wouldn’t be alive.

My sister is also part of my family, so

without her, I would be spoiled and I

would always be bored. My grandma

is part of my family, but without her I

would not be very safe. (She also gave

birth to my dad, and without him I

would be alive.) I love my family!

I’m also thankful for food. Without

good, I would starve to death. Even

though some foo is “icky,” I have to eat

until I get a full stomach. My favorite

food is tofu. Another example is: Some

people don’t get food and only get

little crumbs. My grandmother always

tells me, “Eat your food because you’re

lucky. Other people don’t have food.”

Another thing I’m thankful for

is that I go to school. Not very many

kids go to good schools in the world

because their parents can’t afford it.

School is also where I learn and become

smart. School can help you with

ignoring bullies also. School also helps

me learn about mistakes. I love school!

The last thing I’m thankful for is

my grandpa. He got me an iPad when

I was 5 and replaced it when I lost it.

He is the only one who doesn’t yell at

me. He cares a lot about me. He wrote

a thankful paper, and the first thing he

wrote about was Julia.

If I could construct my own invention,

it would be a robot that does my homework.

Everyone reading this knows that homework is a

pain!

This robot would be solar-powered so

you won’t need electricity. It would scan your

homework and move its hand faster than you

could blink your eyes.

It has a calculator chip in it. It could write an

essay up to college content. I bet millions of kids

all over the world would use this invention!

Today I will summarize

one of my favorite movie-

turned books, which is “The

Outsiders.” The story is about

two gangs. One of them is

named the Greasers, and the

other is named the Socs. I will

explain the story and summarize

why it is my favorite.

The Greasers have very long

hair and they put grease in their

hair. The Socs have mustaches.

The Socs always hang out with

each other and always jump on

the Greasers. (In the movie, to

“jump” means to fight or hurt

someone.) So the Greasers get

angry at the Socs and want to

fight them. At last, the Greasers

won and the Socs have to stay

in the south of their region.

The Outsiders is the best

movie I have ever watched

because it has a lot of detail

compared to the book. The

movie shows more about every

character. It has a very sad

ending to the movie as well. For

example, one of the characters

named Johnny dies from trying

to rescue the kids from

a burning house and he

got a third degree burn

from that. The second

example is another

character named Dally;

he died because after

Johnny died, he got so

upset he robbed a store

and died when the police

showed up.

The Outsiders is in

one of the banned book

lists because it has bad

words, fighting, and

killing. It is ranked 38

as the most challenged

book. I read the book

when in middle school

when it was not banned.

I even had to write an

essay arguing if the book

should be banned or not.

So the reasons why

I like The Outsiders are

because it has a very

good ending and uses a lot

of big words. The book is also

very challenging. I can see why

this book should be banned for

Reflections from Jennifer Le:Dance Club: Day 1, Recruiting

On the first day of dance club, we had to

recruit members. Melissa, Mrs. Ada, and

I were going around the center asking students if

they would like to join the dance club. Phat said that he would join the team. He likes

dancing. However, he ended up being the only boy

on the dance team. We had some girls say that they

would join, but they didn’t in the end.

The thing that made students want to join was

when Mrs. Ada said that whoever was on the dance

team could get extra food. Then my friends and

I decided to join. We still wanted to recruit Dalla

into the team, but her parents wouldn’t allow her.

In the end, the official Newrizons dance team was

Phat, Melissa, Nhi, Madonna, Christina Thach, Tina,

Christina Truong, Vivian, and me, Jennifer. This isn’t

the whole story of the dance team. Read the next

issue to find out about our practices.

Pho originated in North Vietnam during the early

1900s. In South Vietnam, they usually eat it for breakfast and occasionally for lunch. But in the North, they eat it any time of the day. Pho is consumed by many Asians.

Pho is a Vietnamese food.

The Vietnamese noodle soup,

pho, consists of broth and

linguine-shaped rice noodles

called banh pho. Banh pho may

have few herbs and meat. The

meat could be either beef or

chicken. Pho is a popular food

in Vietnam. Hanoi and Saigon

style of pho differ by the noodle

width, sweetness of both, and

choice or herbs.

There are many chain

restaurant that serve pho, most

of which is run by Vietnamese

refugees.

To learn more on how to

slow-cook pho, keep reading to

the right (continued on page 20

as well)!

To make pho you will need: • 2 lbs beef marrow bones, well rinsed• 2 1/2 lbs boneless beef brisket, fat left on• 1 (4-inch) piece of ginger• 1/2 yellow onion• 4 whole star anise• 3 whole cloves• 1 cinnamon stick• 1 teaspoon whole coriander seeds• 1/2 teaspoon whole back peppercorns• 3 quarts water• 2 teaspoons granulated sugar, more if needed• 2 teaspoons salt, more if needed• Freshly ground black pepper, if needed• Special equipment: slow cooker, cheesecloth, finemeshstrainer

At the Newrizons Center we conducted a simple poll in which we found students preferring the following foods:

For the individually-served soup: • 3/4lbsirloinorfilet

mignon• 1 (16-ounce) package

dried rice vermicelli noodles

• 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves• 4 green onions, ends

trimmed, white and green parts thinly sliced

• 1 Serrano chili, thinly sliced

• 1 lime, cut into wedges• Sriracha hot sauce, for

serving

• Hoisin sauce, for serving

Preheat the broiler and place a rack in the top third of the oven.

Fill a large pot with 1-inch of water and bring to a boil. Add the bones and brisket to the pot and cover. Steam, covered, for 15 minutes. Remove the bones and brisket from the pot with tongs and place them in a slow cooker.

Place the halved yellow onion, cut side up, and the ginger (skin left on) on a baking sheet. Broil for 5 to 8 minutes until the onion is just charred and the skin of the ginger is blackened. Add the charred onion to the slow cooker. Let the ginger cool then remove the blackenedskinusingyourfingersand place it in the slow cooker as well.

Toast the star anise, cloves, cinnamon stick, coriander seeds, and peppercorns in a small skillet over medium heat until fragrant. Add them to the slow cooker and cover everything with 3 quarts of water.Note:Don’toverfillyourslow cooker. If you can’t add the full 3 quarts of water, don’t worry. Just add as much as you can and leave it at that. Liquid doesn’t evaporate as much from your slow cooker as it would from a stock pot.

Cook on low for 12 hours. After 12 hours, use tongs to remove the

brisket. Let cool then refrigerate until ready to use. Use the tongs to remove and discard the bones. Lineafinemeshstrainerwithcheesecloth and strain the broth into a storage container. Let the broth cool and then refrigerate the broth until ready to use. If using immediately, skim the fat from the broth using a slotted spoon.

When ready to prepare the pho, remove the broth from the refrigerator. Remove the congealed fat from the broth and reheat the broth in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the sugar and salt once the broth begins to simmer. Remove the brisket from the refrigerator and shred it, avoiding the fat. The fat can be discarded and the shredded brisket should be added to the broth.

Bring a medium pot of water to boil. Add the rice vermicelli noodles and cook for 4 to 5 minutes or as instructed on the package. Drain the noodles and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process. Divide the cooked noodles between four bowls.

Slice the sirloin into thin strips making sure to slice against the grain. You can place the sirloin in the freezer for 20 minutes before slicing to make this easier.

Taste the broth and adjust the seasonings as needed. The raw sirloin can be placed in the bowls (if sliced thinly enough it will cook when the hot broth is added) or can be added to the broth and cookedbrieflybeforeserving.Ladle the broth and beef over the noodles and serve the pho with the cilantro, sliced green onion, serrano, and lime wedges. Sriracha hot sauce and hoisin sauce also make great accompaniments.

ENTERTAINMENT

ReviewWITH DUY NGUYEN (11TH GRADE)

LAST YEAR’S HYPE: ‘JURASSIC WORLD’

Jurassic World

is the fourth

installment for the

Jurassic Park series. The

movie stars Chris Pratt,

Bryce Dallas Howard,

and Judy Greer.

Located off the coast

of Costa Rica, the Jurassic

World luxury resort provides

a habitat for an array of

genetically engineered

dinosaurs, including the vicious

and intelligent Indominus rex.

When the massive creature

escapes, it sets off a chain

reaction that causes the other

dinosaurs to run wild.

Now, it’s up to a former

military man and animal

expert (Chris Pratt) to use

his special skills to save two

young brothers and the rest

of the tourists from an all-out,

prehistoric assault.

READ MORE ON THE NEXT PAGE TO

FIND OUT DUY’S FINAL VERDICT ON THE MOVIE.

Page 25: Newrizons Magazine » Volume 1 Issue 1

25

‘Jurassic World’ is the type

of sequel where you don’t need

to watch the previous movies

(which I know most of you guys

have not seen) to understand the

plot. The movie has everything

kids and adults could possibly

love (explosion, guns, dinosaurs,

et cetera).

Even though the movie has

many good scenes in it, it still

leaves many gaps where people

have to start questioning the

movie. For example, how did

they manage to open the park

after the event that took place in

the previous movies?

The movie also has too

many cliches in it, from the

siblings who bond because Mom

and Dad might be splitting up,

to an icy adult who learns to love

in time of crisis, to the obligatory

profit-driven villain who refuses

to shut things down even as the

dead body count piles up.

About two-thirds of this

movie is dedicated to the

thundering action sequences,

with the remaining time devoted

to the usual sci-fi thriller tropes. This movie also has some

sense of humor in it, like when

one of the park’s staff members

wore a T-shirt that said Jurassic

Park on it, exclaiming that he just

Page 26: Newrizons Magazine » Volume 1 Issue 1

26

scored this vintage “Jurassic

Park” T-shirt on eBay for $150.

The ones in mint condition go

for $300.

However, sometimes

the actors in this movie

forget to act genuine and

natural. Chris Pratt is the

first persons that came to

mind. I’m a big Chris Pratt

fan, but he’s so focused on

playing the action hero with

a smirk on his face and a

hankering for the girl who

can’t resist his charms, Chris

ends up being kind of a

stiff. However, it is hard not

to look a little goofy when

you’re pretending to be

squaring off against a bunch

of raptors, who of course,

won’t really be in the scene

until post-production.

Other than all the

issues mentioned, the movie

was a great success and

box office killer. The action

was great, the special effect

was spectacular, and oh the

glorious soundtrack from

the previous movies made

it way back to people heart.

How can your heart not soar

when the music swells and

the camera swoops over

Jurassic World before all the

chaos ensues? You happily

strap on the seat belt and

let the silly greatness of it all

wash over you.

PHOTO ABOVE: Chris Pratt’s and Bryce Dallas Howard’s character team up to save the park and people in peril.
