Fort Adams State Park has become an active historical site hosting numerous special events and offering guided and self-guided tours.

The fort, which faces the East Passage of Narragansett Bay, was built between 1824 and 1857 as protection against sea invasion. It remained in use as a fortification until the 1950s and had been mostly neglected since then until the Fort Adams Trust was created in 1994.

The fort covers about 80 acres and has a six-acre parade ground. When it was built it was considered the greatest engineering feat of its kind, and it has gone down in history as one of the best-built and most impregnable military fortifications in the country.

During guided tours, visitors to the historic fort are able to walk the grounds and the interior of certain portions of the fort that have been restored.

After you ascend the fort walls and explore both the sea and land defenses, the tour includes a visit to the underground listening tunnels. The highlight for many visitors, these listening tunnels stretch underneath the walls of Fort Adams for over half a mile. Guided and self-guided tours are available daily

With knowledgeable guides to lead the way, the tours provide information about the fort’s construction and its role as a military fortification into the 1950s.

For more information about events, tours and admission prices, visit www.fortadams.org.

Fort Adams Welcomes Visitors for Tours and Special Events

The Pawtucket Red Sox have gotten off to a good start again this season, and

little wonder since they have a roster filled with top prospects of the Boston Red Sox including pitchers Brian Johnson, Henry Owens, and Keith Couch. Joining these upcoming stars include first baseman Sam Travis, and catcher Christian Vasquez.

The AAA Pawsox, who play their games at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, RI, just north of Providence, are one year removed from their championship 2014 season.

In May they have over a dozen games scheduled at McCoy, which is one of the region’s best family bargains and a promise of great family fun. Home games are May 5-8, May 13-18 and May 24-29.

With affordable prices and seats close to

the action, you get a chance to see future Major League stars and a number of players including veteran shortstop Deven Marrero. Marrero is only 25, so it’s hard to think of him as a “veteran,” but this will be his third season with Pawtucket. Former Cardinals standout Allen Craig, while hampered with injuries since being acquired by Boston, is an veteran who could provide valuable experience to the PawSox.

The PawSox were in the news during the off season as the team considered a move to a new stadium in Providence. But after much deliberation the team is now committed to McCoy Stadium and the city of Pawtucket.

The PawSox established a Hall of Fame during the offseason. The first inductees are outfielder Jim Rice and third baseman Wade Boggs in the player category, and late owner Ben Mondor in the non-player category. Mondor has long been credited with saving Triple-A baseball in Pawtucket

Many Boston Red Sox stars have played in Pawtucket over the years including cur-rent players like Dustin Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts. From time to time during the season fans also have a chance to see play-ers from the Major League team playing at Pawtucket as part of rehab from an injury.

For more info and a schedule of the PawSox games go to pawsox.com or call 401-724-7300.

The Providence Athenaeum Opens Doors to EnlightenmentThe Providence Athenaeum opens its door

this May to a dynamic Salon Series. On May 6, from 5pm to 7pm. Athenaeum Execu-tive Director/writer Matt Burriescic leads a conversation about ideas and education in “Philosophers and Education.” On May 17, the Athenaeum and Rhode Island Public Radio co-host “Policy & Pinot: RIPR’s Political Roundtable,” timely conversations on vital issues facing Rhode Island.

The Salons are free and open to the public, and all are welcome to attend. As with all programs, the Providence Athenaeum intro-duces visitors to creative people and projects in Providence.

The Athenaeum, incorporated in 1836, houses diverse collections of art and lit-erature. Some notable acquisitions include the Description de l’Egypte, an enormous 23-volume set depicting Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt in the late eighteenth century, and The Hours, an ivory miniature painted by Newport-born Edward Greene Malbone in 1801, both of which can be seen in the Art and Special Collection sections.

Recognized as one of the “World’s Most Beautiful Libraries” by Condé Nast Traveler magazine the Athenaeum shares space on the list with libraries from the Stockholm Public Library in Sweden, the Richard J. Riordan Central Library in Los Angeles to the State Library of South Australia and Library of Alexandria in Egypt.

A small, but beautiful Greek Revival building “boast noteworthy exteriors – think soaring architecture, amazing art and bountiful gardens,” wrote Condé Nast.“There’s a heavy focus on Rhode Island history and authors who hail from the Ocean State, including Providence native H.P. Lovecraft – you’ll find a new bust of the famed horror author on display,” Condé Nast added.

The Providence Athenaeum is located at 251 Benefit St, Providence, RI 02903. For hours and schedule of events go to providenceathenaeum.org or call 401-421-6970.

The third oldest working lighthouse in the United States, Beavertail Lighthouse at the southern tip of Jamestown in Narragansett Bay offers a living history lesson to anyone

who visits. But it’s actually more than just a lighthouse and museum. With beautiful grounds facing the bay and great fishing opportunities nearby, Beavertail is a lovely day trip that could encompass history, panoramic scenic beauty, picnicking, and more.

The most visited landmark in Jamestown, Beavertail Lighthouse has a history that dates to 1749 when the first version was built. It had to be reconstructed just four years later when the wooden structure was destroyed by fire. It later met ruin when the British occupied and destroyed it in 1779, but this sturdy light has made several comebacks, including a 1783 reconstruction.

The current structure dates to 1856, and it has been on the forefront of changes in lighthouses ever since, employing one of the first fog warning devices a year later. In 1898, a keeper’s house was added, and in 1931 the lighthouse was fitted with its first electric beacon. Forty years later, the light was automated, making the keeper’s job obsolete.

Restoration of the lighthouse and attendant buildings began in 1983, and the Bea-vertail Lighthouse Museum opened in 1989. Today it includes narrative history of the lighthouse, artifacts, a gift shop and more. Visitors can climb to the top of the light-house tower for a $5 fee, but there are some restrictions: you must be at least 4 feet tall; children and pets cannot be carried; you cannot wear flip flops and must have both hands free for the climb. That doesn’t seem like much to ask.

Beavertail Lighthouse Museum is open weekends from Memorial Day to June 12 from noon to 3. It opens seven days a week 10:30 to 4:30 beginning June 13. For information about group tours or special events, call 401-423-3270. Visit the museum’s website at beavertaillight.org.

“We feel the restaurant is quintessential Newport,” says General Manager Charlie Holder. “Seafood is our focal point, but ev-erything here says Newport.”

From lunchtime lobster rolls and raw bar to dinnertime streak frites, Midtown Oyster Bar has something for everyone’s taste. A wide array of appetizers, a great burger and sandwich menu, terrific dinner entrees and raw bar specials all combine to reward repeat diners and occasional visitors.

The restaurant offers two bar areas: one in the first floor tavern area and a second floor Burgee Bar. Three dining rooms and two outside decks allow for plenty of dining space, and the views from the decks are special.

The dining spaces are beautifully decorated by Jessica Phillips, Larry’s wife. The first floor dining room has a casual feel. The pe-rimeter of the room is lined with comfortable leather booths and can seat up to 40 guests.

If you’re looking for a fun spot to join with friends or family for some freshly shucked oysters and ice cold beer, the tavern room is for you. It has high top tables for a casual, bar atmosphere, where you can gather with friends to enjoy a great meal, beverages and super raw bar plates including three types of ceviche.

A huge American flag hangs out over the second floor dining room suspended from the mast of a boat Jessica’s father once owned. It provides the inspiration for the Grand Flag Room, which is Midtown’s signature dining space. Vaulted post and beam ceiling, cus-tom made light fixtures, and colonial style windows are all accentuated by a beautiful cupola. Adorned with custom-made farm tables, the Grand Flag room is a unique din-ing space in the city.

Also on the second floor, The West Room is the ideal location for an intimate gathering.

This space has a cozy feel, with beautiful custom made light fixtures, and warm wood accents. A versatile space, it can accommo-date up to 40 guests for dining, and it can be combined with The Grand Flag room for a larger gathering with the same intimate feel. You won’t find better views of Newport Harbor.

As attractive and comfortable as the restaurant is, it would be nowhere without good food. Under the direction of Chef James Mitchell, Midtown Oyster Bar serves lunch and dinner daily with raw bar specialties available day and night. “We’re serving eight to 10 different oysters every day from the mid-Atlantic to Canada and the West Coast, but especially Rhode Island’s,” Holder said. “We want people to think of us as a genuine oyster bar, not just in name.”

“People expect great fresh seafood in New-port, and we’re emphasizing that,” he adds.

Raw Bar Plates range from smoked salmon and chilled lobster to citrus marinated seafood, sea scallop sashimi and littlenecks on the half shell, a Rhode Island favorite. Seafood dinners feature traditional dishes like fried cod and sesame-crusted Atlantic salmon, but they include creative entrees such as grilled Norwegian salmon, caramel-ized sea scallops, and oven-roasted lobster tails. Cioppino, fish and chips and other seafood standbys are on the menu as well.

Even if you’re not in the mood for a full meal, you can sit comfortably in one of the bar areas and enjoy something from a beer list in the 50s or a wine list that exceeds that number. Match your drinks with appetizers such as Mussels Frites, fried oysters, Mary-land lump crab cakes, steamed shrimp, Thai lettuce wraps and more. Fit yourself into the first floor nook of a raw bar that looks cool both figuratively and literally.

Don’t worry, there’s something on the lunch, dinner and appetizer menu if you’re not a seafood fan including Streak Frites, roasted chicken, pork tenderloin medallions or 12-ounce New York sirloin, among others. One of their newest entrees is an Oyster Stout braised short rib dinner. The Oyster Stout is brewed for Midtown by Harpoon.

Midtown Oyster Bar is serving great sal-ads, burgers, and sandwiches including fish tacos, blackened salmon BLT, and, of course, lobster roll. But wait, there’s a a fried oyster roll as well, and it is one of Midtown’s most popular items. There are several types of chowder including signature Rhode Island Rocky Point clam chowder, a cod chowder, oyster stew and more. Salads include roasted beets and goat cheese, chicken chopper, a rice bowl and lobster salad.

Whichever way you turn at this restaurant, you’ll sense the inviting atmosphere with its references to colonial era Newport in a thor-oughly modern setting. Midtown Oyster Bar is hip and modern but traditional at the same time. It’s a new world, but the best of both. Find out more online at midtownoyster.com, or call 401-619-4100.

In about two years time, The Shop on Thames has become a bit of a lunch-

time phenomenon in Newport. This popu-lar spot on Lower Thames Street serving healthy sandwiches with lots of style, great soups and salads has expanded to include breakfast sandwiches with equal style and appeal.

When they took ownership of a sand-wich shop on Lower Thames Street in Newport in 2014, Billy Finn and broth-ers Matt and Ryan Sasenick had already invested a lot in it. They had been work-ing there for some time, and when the owners were preparing to shut it down, they stepped up and bought the busi-ness, renamed it The Shop on Thames, and brought their creative ideas about healthy lunch to the table. The hard work and creativity haven’t stopped.

Utilizing all organic products locally grown and produced in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, the three have es-tablished their shop as something more than just a place to get a sandwich. “We’re dedicated to healthy and local,” says Billy, who has years of experience as a chef at several high-end Newport restaurants including Café Zelda, Le Bistro and the Hotel Viking. “I’ve taken what I learned at those restaurants and brought it here for people to enjoy.”

In addition to the signature items that have drawn people to The Shop, they’ve recently added a new burger menu, a stylish grilled cheese menu, lobster roll, Morrocan curry roasted vegetable wrap and more. The breakfast menu includes standard sandwiches on a bagel or bolo, but they’re planning on waffle sand-wiches, too. “We make our own sausage and roast all our meats,” Billy notes. “The key for us is gourmet, fresh and local. We want to use creative approaches to customers’ favorites.”

Customers inspired the addition of a breakfast menu that began this month. “We’ve had steady growth over the past year or so, and a lot of the same people come in all the time for lunch,” Billy said. “They are the folks who urged us to do breakfast sandwiches.”

You can get lunch anywhere, but finding gourmet sandwiches, burgers and salads all made in-house with local, organic ingredients is another experi-ence beyond mere lunch. They’ve kept the basic menu simple at The Shop, but all the sandwiches have creative touches that set them apart. From Pulled Pork to a Reuben, Buffalo Chicken, BLT or Gyro, you’ll find that these are not ordinary takes on traditional sandwiches, and they are full of flavor.

They serve pan-seared crab cakes made fresh with a veggie slaw and house remoulade on brioche sliders. “We’ve had people from Maryland tell us our crab cake sandwich is the best they’ve ever had,” Billy says.

The style extends to all the sand-wiches, like their Caprese with garlic dressed greens, heirloom tomatoes, roasted red peppers, fresh mozzarella and basil pesto on a French baguette. There’s much more including Greek, Caesar and house salads to an Italian sandwich on a baguette with ham, genoa salami, lettuce, tomato, red onion, red peppers, pickles and, finishing touches, black olive tapenade and baklouti green chili oil. Not ordinary at all.

The Shop’s burger menu just got better and bigger. To their popular Bayou Bleu burger they have added a Johnny Apple-seed burger, an Asian tofu burger and a few others. The grilled cheese menu lets you go basic or fancy with lots of cheeses to choose from. They also have a kids’ menu with kiddie burger sliders, grilled chicken, turkey and cheese, grilled cheese and mac and cheese.

The Shop serves a soup of the day and a classic clam chowder that gets great re-views from customers, as do their salads. They’ll cater special events that will be casual but memorable.

The Shop on Thames, 397 Thames St., Newport. Open Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday to Sunday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.You can find out more online at theshoponthames.com, or call 401-619-5353.
