High Achievers’ Program
Last week, the High Achievers’ Celebration Evening was held at Kelvin
Grove State College. Year 5&6 students from schools throughout the City
Cluster came together to showcase what they had achieved over the last six
weeks. Robotic programs, poetry presentations, drama, marketing products,
science experiments, creative art pieces and computer games were all
showcased. The students’ presentations were a credit to them and I
thoroughly enjoyed sharing their achievements.
Sports Day
What a wonderful day we had! The children were full of enthusiasm and
showed great team spirit. A big thank you to Mrs Butters, her excellent
organisation ensured that the day ran smoothly. Thank you also to Mr
Gradwell, the teachers and House Captains for their contribution. We must
also thank Kelda, Nicole and their team of helpers who provided sustenance
for our athletes during the course of the day. It was great to see children of
all abilities enjoying physical activity and embracing the spirit of the day!
Congratulations to the winning house – Brolga!
Congratulations also to the Age Champions:
12 Years – Jack and Violet
11 Years – Indigo and Asha
10 Years – Zac D and Eve S
9 Years – Oscar V and Emma A
Musical Soiree
On Wednesday evening, our music students entertained us with a short
concert so that parents had an opportunity to see how hard they have been
working during the term. We were fortunate that it was a mild night and the
performances were very much enjoyed by the audience. Both choirs and the
band excelled. Thank you to Mrs Battersby, Miss Enchelmaier and Miss
Harris for their dedication in preparing the children. Thanks also to Mrs
Strimaitis for her assistance supervising the children.

Life Education
Next week, we will have the Life Education van visiting our school. Children will participate in various modules of
work related to making smart life choices for a healthy future. A reminder to please email permission for your
child to attend to your child’s class teacher. Also, please contact the office if you are attending the Parent
Information Session on Monday afternoon. The van will be arrive this afternoon around 4.00pm so no vehicles
will be able to enter or exit the main gate on Banks Street around this time.
Report Cards
Report Cards for Semester 1 will be going home on Wednesday 27 June. As is our usual practice, report cards
will be sent home via email. To ensure the ongoing success, please ensure that the office has your current email
address. If you do not have an email address, please advise the office that you require a hard copy of your child’s
report card.
Pyjama Day & Active School Travel Breakfast
The Student Council have requested that we have a Onesie/Pyjama Day to raise money for
our World Vision Child, Frederick from Zambia. This will be held on the last day and all
students are asked to bring a gold coin for this worthy cause. An Active School Travel
breakfast will also take place on this day and we need parents to contribute to ensure there
is enough breakfast to go around. If you can contribute juice, fruit, or a plate of food please
visit the Volunteer Sign Up Sheet. Remember, donations need to be nut free. Thank you in
advance!
School Uniforms
With the cool weather upon us, children are tending to wear more layers to keep warm, please note as the
prospectus states “Pupils are encouraged to wear school uniform”. The holidays are a good opportunity to revisit
the uniform and ensure that your child has the correct uniform requirements. Our smart, warm Newmarket
jumpers are for sale at the uniform shop. In winter the children may wear a royal blue tracksuit. At this time of the
year, this item of clothing can often be purchased for a very reasonable price at the various department stores.
After the holidays, it would be great to see no coloured jumpers and everyone abiding by the uniform
requirements. Let us all wear our Newmarket school uniform with pride.
Happy and Safe Holiday
As this is last newsletter for the term, I would like to wish all of our students, parents and staff a happy and safe
holiday. The holidays will give us all a chance to catch our breath after what has been an extremely busy term.
Highlights of the term included the District Cross Country, Sports Day, NAPLAN, Gala Days, ANZAC Day
Ceremony, High Achievers Program at Kelvin Grove State College, the Mother’s Day Stall and class excursions.
Everyone can now look forward to a new range of engaging activities during Term 3.
Staffing
Miss Doyle will be on leave for weeks 1 and 2 of Term 3 and will be replaced by Mrs Moy, one of our regular
relieving teachers.
Queensland parents to have their say on NAPLAN
Parents, caregivers and community members are invited to provide their feedback on NAPLAN and its role in
meeting the needs of Queensland students and schools. Led by independent reviewer Dr Gabrielle Matters, the
evaluation will involve state, Catholic and independent schools to ensure a broad view of parent opinions are
captured. An online survey is currently available to give as many people as possible the opportunity to have their
say. In Term 3, 2018, the evaluation will focus on gathering the feedback of school leaders, communities and
stakeholders.

Time Out – protect students from spreading
infectious diseases
When your child is ill, look after them at home to help
reduce the spread of germs and prevent other children
becoming ill. Keep surfaces, toys and equipment clean
and encourage your child to wash their hands often,
even when they feel well. If your child is suffering from
a virus, gastroenteritis or another illness, there are
rules about when they can return to school. Learn
more about symptoms and exclusion rules in
Queensland and take your child to the doctor if you are
concerned.

Let’s Celebrate - NAIDOC Week 2018 - “Because of Her, We Can!”
Year 3 classes invite members of the Newmarket State School community to acknowledge and celebrate NAIDOC
Week 2018. This year, NAIDOC Week is celebrated from the 8 to 15 July.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Miss Thorburn and Mrs Hamer would like to thank students and teachers for entries in this year’s NAIDOC Week
competition. Students from Prep to Year 2 participated in a colouring competition while some students in Years 3 to 6
participated in a poetry writing competition.
For your enjoyment, we have included a number of poems written by Year 3 and Year 6 students. These students are
to be congratulated on their enthusiasm, effort and talent.
Mrs Hamer and Miss Thorburn
Spirit Dreaming:
Let Our Spirits Dream
My home, my heart - you’ve destroyed it now.
All I have is a sad, desperate frown.
I’ll fight for it –
Leading a light,
Through the dark, dark night.
If you give it back, peace will be restored.
We all own Australia – our land adored.
So let’s open the doors of friendship
and sing a peaceful song.
Create harmony in this place,
We all belong.
Slater T, Year 3H
That is Spirit Dreaming
Black or white –
Friends day and night.
That is spirit dreaming.
We don’t need to judge one another,
We are all sister and brother.
That is spirit dreaming.
We don’t need to fight,
We all have the right.
That is spirit dreaming.
We don’t need to own the land,
Stand together hand in hand.
That is spirit dreaming.
We have this world to share,
To respect, to care – that is fair.
That is spirit dreaming.
Imogen S, Year 3G
Spirit Dreaming: My Sacred Place
When I go to the beach, my spirit sings,
The sand shimmers, the ocean glows.
I close my eyes and listen - crashing waves,
Squawking seagulls, the wind blows.
When I sit on the sand, my spirit sings,
Trees rustling on the ground.
Birds soaring through the sky,
Rain pattering down.
When I go to the beach, my spirit sings.
The beach is my sacred place – so you find
yours.
Charli M, Year 3H
Spirit Dreaming
They carved Gondwana,
And only gave: life and land:
So why do we take?
Fred P, Year 6IL
Spirit Dreaming
Nature you respect,
But when people disrespect
Earth will be no more.
Grace Q, Year 6IL
Spirit Dreaming in a Sacred Place
(A personal tribute to Mount Barney National
Park, South East Queensland, and the
Mununjali and Githabul peoples.)
I have a very special place,
My family visits once a year.
The scent of gum trees on my face,
When I leave, it’s always near.
I have a very special place,
That makes me happy when I’m there.
I have a very sacred place,
I love to breathe the fresh, fresh air.
I have a very special place,
Where trees grow tall and so do I.
‘The bush’ – for people of every race,
When there, I heave a contented sigh.
Yes.
I have a very special place.
Yes.
I have a very sacred place.
Rosemary B, Year 3G
Spirit Dreaming
As the land hardened
And the rushing rivers flowed
Their stories were told.
Maegan L, Year 6IL
Spirit Dreaming
Indigenous sing,
Trees and animals hum too,
Gondwana’s music.

Newmarket State School QDU Debating Team Students from Newmarket State School competed in Round 1 of the Year 5 2018 Queensland Debating Union
Competition on Wednesday 13 June 2018. The topic was "that we should have a mandatory year of national
service (eg community service or the military) after graduating high school". NSS was up against Kedron State
School, a school which has a well established debating culture with well over two years' QDU Competition
experience. NSS was arguing in the affirmative and the team members included William, Amelia, Ruben,
Thomas.
This was the NSS students first inter-school debate after completing only one intra-school debate. The students
should feel very proud of their efforts. The adjudicator noted that the competition was close with NSS missing out
on a win by a very small margin. Congratulations NSS and best of luck for Round 2 which will be held on
Thursday 9 August 2018.
New Childcare subsidy
From 2 July 2018, there will be a new Child Care
Subsidy that will replace the current Child Care Benefit

If you have an existing CCR and CCB, and you are
regularly using OSHC services, but you do not
complete this registration before 2nd
July, then you will
be unable to receive any claim benefits under the new
subsidy scheme.
Please contact Centrelink directly if you have any
questions or queries about your registration.

Premier’s Coding Challenge 2018
Well done to the following students who entered the Premier’s Coding Challenge –
Angel A, Isis B, Slater T, Emma T and Rafael A. We are super proud of the enthusiasm
and responsible attitude you showed when designing a digital solution with the theme
‘anti-cyberbullying’. We wish you all the very best!
Makerspace
This term the ‘makerspacers’ have been busy planning, designing, creating, and
evaluating. The students were given the problem of using their ‘passions’ to solve a
problem area in the school. The students have used Scratch, Minecraft, Lego and
various applications to create their solutions.
Drama News School drama lessons are coming to an end for the
children in Prep, Years 1, 2 and 6 this term and it has
been great to see the confidence of our students grow
over the semester. Last week, both Year 2 classes
brought a story to life when they performed
“Lullabyhullabaloo” for the Prep and Year 1 classes.
This week, the Year 6’s took on the roles of Villain,
Heroine, and Hero and performed their very own and
hilarious Melodramas, and highlighted all they had
learned about role, character, voice and staging. Well
done to all!
Visit from Enoggera Fire Station
On a cold windy Monday Year One Students received a visit from Enoggera Fire Station. Four Fire Fighters
arrived in an impressive red fire truck. They taught us that if you are caught in a fire you must ‘GET DOWN LOW
AND GO, GO, GO’ and if your clothes are on fire you must ‘STOP, DROP AND ROLL.’ We learnt that we must
not take our clothes off as it could burn our faces. Mrs Avolio got to experience what it is like to dress up as a Fire
Fighter. Lastly we got to explore the fire truck and all the marvellous equipment they use to help rescue people
from fires and car accidents. Our favourite part of the visit was when we all got a turn of the fire hoses. Thank you
Enoggera Fire Station for your informative visit.

Music News Why Music???
You are never so together with other people as when you make music with them, in tune, in time and expressing
the whole world of meaning. It is in the early years of life, especially, that we build the grounding for these abilities
- and in our society, it is in the schools that it happens. - Dr Richard Letts
Music Soiree
Congratulations to all our wonderful musicians on their fantastic performances at the Music Soiree on
Wednesday evening! It was a full program, with every child in the Instrumental Music Program performing in their
lesson groups and small groups. Many of these children had never performed before and they did an amazing
job. The Junior choir really set the tone for the evening with a fabulous rendition of “We’re All In This
Together” (thanks Miss Heidi!) and the Senior Choir shared some lovely sentiments about “Why We Sing” before
lifting everybody “Up”. Conrad impressed everyone with his solo piano performance and it was amazing to see
Menno, Will, Violet and Amelia (not to mention Miss Harris on the drum kit) as they performed “Feel It Still” in
Newmarket’s very first stage band. The Concert Band brought the evening to an end with an exciting Beethoven’s
Ninth and scary Spooks.
Many thanks to our audience; parents, grandparents and students, who braved the cold and so warmly supported
and encouraged our young performers.

Tuckshop News Farewell Julie
We thank Julie for her many years of service to the Newmarket Community and wish her all the
best as she moves on to bigger and better things. She should be really proud of the position
that she leaves our Tuckshop in. We will really miss her.
What Happens Now?
The Tuckshop Sub-committee will run Tuckshop next week with Tahra Birch (Julie's 2IC, Tuckshop sub-
committee member, Mum of Kate (Year 4) and Eric (Year 1), All-round good person) stepping into the Convenor
role. We will be taking a proposal, to next week's P&C meeting, which will enable us to keep this service
operating from the beginning of Term 3.
Homebake and Volunteer Roster
Thank you to all our home bakers and volunteers. We can't keep this service running without you (or a
Convenor!). If you are able to volunteer in Term 3, please send us an email at [email protected] so we
can get organised. We will send out the usual "get sorted for next Term" email. Random home bakers (you know
who you are) are most welcome. We really need to build up our volunteer base for Tuesdays. Any volunteered
time is helpful, and help on Tuesday mornings would be really appreciated.
