Welcome to Mountain Home A L E T T E R F R O M T H E W I N G C O M M A N D E R

Welcome to Gunfighter Country and congratulations on becoming part of a proud heritage.

Mountain Home AFB and the 366th Fighter Wing have a rich history, stretching back more than 70 years to the United States’ entry into World War II. Our “Gunfighter” nickname was earned in 1967, while the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing was stationed at Da Nang Air Base, Vietnam. Pilots were missing opportunities to shoot down enemy MiGs because the missiles were ineffective at short ranges and the F-4C lacked a gun. However, innovative Wing aircrew and maintainers worked together, mounted external 20-millimeter Gatling gun pods on the wings of the F-4Cs and developed new tactics, enabling pilots to score 4 MiG kills within the first month of operation. Soon other units followed suit. The gun pod innovation and the MiG kills that followed earned the Wing a Presidential Unit Citation for shooting down 11 enemy aircraft in a three-month period, and the moniker of “Gunfighters” was born.

Today, we continue the innovation and teamwork demonstrated by our predecessors while flying both the F-15E Strike Eagle and the Republic of Singapore Air Force F-15SG aircraft, preparing to fight our Nations’ wars today and in the future. Whether you are a maintainer, a medic, a pilot or WSO, a logistician or any other integral part of our Air Force, you are joining an incredible team that works tirelessly to protect our country and it’s citizens while maintaining the tradition of excellence the Gunfighters are known for.

While we work hard to defend our Nation, we also enjoy our time off. Idaho is an amazing place in which to live and work. It is a very a diverse state, rich not only in outdoor activities, but also in cultural history. From a quiet fishing hole to a rugged mountain hike, the Mountain Home area provides a vast array of adventurous pastimes and nearby Boise is alive with activity; museums, art galleries, concerts, plays and symphonies are all within an hour drive.

Newcomer’s Guide — 1

DAVID IVERSON, Col. USAFCommander, 366th Fighter Wing

I look forward to working with you to defend our nation and getting to know you and your families. You are now part of the Gunfighter legacy and will continue our heritage of teamwork, excellence, and innovation.

Ride Hard, Shoot Straight and Always Speak the Truth!

Col. David Iverson Commander, 366th Fighter Wing

PRIORITY PLACEMENT PROGRAM (PPP)

MILITARY SPOUSE PREFERENCE PROGRAM (PROGRAM “S”)

In 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed a law granting employment preference to military spouses, the department

opened the Priority Placement Program (PPP) to spouses relocating with their sponsors to new duty stations. By 2008, more than 52,000 spouses had obtained DOD jobs through the Priority Placement Program (PPP), which has clearly become a significant quality of life benefit for military families.

The Department of Defense Military Spouse Preference Program (Program S) - a subprogram of the Priority Placement Program (PPP) - provides statutory employment preference to military spouses. By giving military spouses priority in the employment selection process, Program S works to reduce the impact of frequent relocations on spouse’s careers. The program applies to spouses of active duty military members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the

U.S. Coast Guard and full-time National Guard who desire priority consideration for competitive service positions. Spouses who meet the eligibility requirements are eligible to participate in the Military Spouse Preference Program. Spouses may register 30 days prior to the Sponsor’s PCS reporting date.

REGISTRATION ASSISTANCELocal Civilian Personnel offices serve as the regis-tration points for Program S. Spouses in the United States may apply for the Military Spouse Preference Program 30 days prior to the Sponsor’s reporting date to the new duty station. However, spouses traveling to overseas areas cannot receive preference until they actually arrive.

WHO WE ARE The Child Development Program is designed to provide quality, affordable childcare in support of the children and families of Mountain Home AFB.

WHAT WE DO The MHAFB Child Development Program is certified by the Department of Defense and is fully accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs (NAEYC). Our Child Development Center is your child’s “home away from home”, providing hourly and weekly care for children as young as 6 weeks of age through 5 years of age, as well as a Part Day Enrichment Program. Our program acknowledges that children learn through active, hands-on involvement with their environment, peers, and caring adults. We respect each child’s unique interests, experiences, abilities and needs, thus allowing us to be responsive to and appropriate for each child. Children are valued as individuals, as well as part of a

group. Likewise, our program respects and supports the ideals, cultures, and values of families in their task of nurturing children. The activities planned for the children, the way classrooms are organized, the daily schedule, and the way the teachers interact with the children are all designed to support the development of the whole child and ensure each child reaches their full potential and develops a positive attitude towards learning.

All meals and snacks are prepared in accordance with USDA guidelines. Our programs are inspected at least 4 times a year by base agencies and Air Force personnel to ensure health, safety, fire, and program guidelines are maintained. Fee schedules are based on total family income and the type of program the child(ren) are enrolled in. A price chart may be obtained from the CDC front desk.
