There’s little denying that Tennessee-born power-pop outfit Big Star were one of the most criminally underrated bands of all time. Now, that is set to be rectified with a special gig paying homage to perhaps their greatest album, ‘Sister Lovers’.

At Sydney Festival 2014, an all-star line-up will perform the seminal record, which had never been performed live until 2010 when only remaining founding member Jody Stephens, R.E.M’s Mike Mills, The dB’s Chris Stamey and Mitch Easter (Let’s Active) unearthed the original scores and finally brought them to life.

The Enmore Theatre will channel the best of the 70s this January when Stephens, Mills and Stamey are joined by The Posies’ Ken Stringfel-low, a local 12-pce ensemble of strings and brass, and guest vocalists Skylar Gudasz, Brett Harris and Kurt Vile revive this legendary record.

New acts confirmed on the exciting Big Star’s Third line up are Cat Power, Edwyn Collins, Tim Rogers (You Am I), Kim Salmon (The Scientists) and Dave Faulkner (Hoodoo Gurus) strongly representing the US, Scottish and Australian music scenes heavily influenced by Big Star.

what's on

by stephen bisset

If its swaggering grooves and thundering riffs, with more than just a touch of neo Southern rock, that blows your hair back, then you’d do well to check out the sophomore album from supergroup Kill Devil Hill (not to be confused with Perth’s The Kill Devil Hills).

Featuring the formidable talents of former Pantera bass player Rex Brown and former Black Sabbath and Dio drummer Vinny Appice, these guys really know how to write the hell out of a chunky riff. While, at times, it does come off as sounding a bit like a reimagining of ‘Alice in Chains’, there is still plenty here to set it apart.

Standouts include the blistering opener ‘No Way Out’ and the thunderous ‘Where Angels Dare to Roam’.

Thanks to some super-slick production, this is definitely one of the monsters of 2013.

This 80s re-imagining of the Charles Dickens classic ‘A Christmas Carol’ is an absolute gem, thanks largely to Bill Murray’s incomparable subtly acerbic wit.

Directed by Richard Donner (‘Lethal Weapon’, ‘The Goonies’) ‘Scrooged’ tells the story of TV executive

ang grinch Frank Cross (Murray) whose network is plan-ning a live adaptation of the aforementioned ‘Christmas Carol’.

Murray, as always, is brilliant.

Given that this flick is directed by the blow-em-up-shoot-em-up king Michael Bay (‘Transformers’,

‘Bad Boys’, Armageddon), it’s a given that you’re not going to get ‘Citizen Kane’. That said, this is a thor-oughly enjoyable film nonetheless. The film follows Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg) a Miami bodybuilder who wants to live the American dream. However he, along with an ex-con and a fellow body-builder (Johnson), decides to chase it via a kidnapping scheme.

Mass effectI

t may’ve been a pretty trying twelve months for Brisbane alternative metallers The Butterfly Effect, but, in keeping with the adage ‘you can’t

keep a good thing down’, the band are back with a vengeance as Newcastle punt-ers are sure to discover when they see in the New Year at the Cambridge Hotel.

“Yeah, it has been a while,” guitarist Kane Goedhart told TE.

“Last year was the first year we missed a New Year’s gig probably since we started, so we’re definitely keen on a big one in Newcastle.”

The Butterfly Effect, thanks to their three genre defining albums ‘Begins Here’, ‘Imago’ and ‘Final Conversation of Kings’, rode the crest of the alternative metal wave that saw many Aussie bands (Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus et al) gain serious traction both here and overseas.

However, creative differences between the band and original singer Clint Boge put the breaks on a highly anticipated fourth album with Boge announcing his departure last year.

While it seemed that we may’ve seen the last of the band, they have re-emerged, completely reinvigorated with a killer new single ‘Eyes Down’ and a new frontman in

Paul Gallagher. Goedhart said that while it is always a difficult prospect replacing a singer, the situation with Gallagher could not be working better.

“All I can say about that is that we did a Sydney gig around October and about halfway through the show, everyone in the crowd was chanting “Paul, Paul, Paul” and I’ve never really seen a reaction like that before, which was just awesome,” he said. “The thing about Paul, as well, is that he is not trying to be a Clint impersonator – everything he is doing he is totally mak-ing his own and we’re really excited about the possibilities.”

For Goedhart, now that the lineup for Butterfly Effect 2.0 is now locked in, there is a palpable sense of relief within the band.

“Yeah, it has been a pretty long time be-tween drinks with albums so it’s a total re-lief that we’re on the path again to put out another f***ing great record.”

Goedhart said fans could expect the long awaited follow-up to 'Final Conversation With Kings’ sometime in the new year.

“We’ve got a solid half-a-dozen songs re-corded now so I’d say we’re about halfway done, so after the tour, we’ll be spending the first half of the year finishing off the album and maybe poking our heads up for the occasional show, but we’re all really excited about getting this album up and out there so keep your ears peeled.”

No summer shambles W

alking down Fitzroy Street in Melbourne, in search of new guitar strings, Jebediah bass-ist, Vanessa Thornton

took a call from TE to talk about the band’s plans from a new album and upcoming their summer tour.

Since Aussie alt-rock stalwarts, Jebediah released their much-anticipated fifth LP, ‘Kosciusko’ in 2011, a record that earned the band nods at both the APRA awards and the International Songwriting Contest, side projects and solo ventures have affixed themselves firmly to the top of the list of priorities for most of the band’s members.

With frontman Kevin Mitchell releasing his fourth record under his Bob Evans moniker, ‘Familiar Stranger,’ earlier this year, drummer, Brett Mitchell and Thornton touring and recording with Perth-based indie outfit, Axe Girl, and a landmass now separating band mates based between Melbourne and Perth, Thornton told TE that these days, getting the band together to write is harder than

music

ever but promised fans that new material was on their radar.

“Since the release of ‘Kosciusko’, we haven’t all had the time to be in the same room together to just sit down and write,” she said. “I think we’ll take the opportunity to hang out between these shows in Janu-ary and maybe start writing stuff and see what the vibe is like in terms of getting a bunch of new songs with the idea of maybe making another record, which I can’t imag-ine will happen very quickly but hopefully

that will happen at some stage in the next seven years or so,” Thornton joked.

Jebs will be ringing in the New Year playing beachside towns across Australia throughout January, including a stopover at the Small Ballroom in Newcastle.

“I think we deserve a holiday as much as anyone, don’t you think?” she said of the coastal tour schedule. “Playing music is fun so what else would we rather do on our holidays than play music?”

No strangers to Newcastle, – they sold out

the Cambridge Hotel last time they visited – Thornton said their Small Ballroom show will be a romp through the band’s 15 year career.

“I honestly can’t remember a show where we haven’t played ‘Leaving Home’,” she said.

“We normally try to play songs off every record and if people are yelling out particular songs enough throughout the gig we’ll generally play them – if we can remember how to!”

T ucked away in a little alcove off the Pacific Highway in Charlestown, Café 147 offers up a veritable treas-

ure trove of delectable gluten-free treats and, in an age where more and more people are seeking a diet free of gluten, this eatery is a definite Godsend.

With a menu that reads more life a novel than a selection of dishes, there is enough here to satisfy even the fussiest of diners. From an all-day breakfast menu that features eggs benedict, home-baked granola and the impressive ‘147 Long & Happy Life start to the day’ (two eggs, bacon, chipolata, baby spinach, grilled tomato and mushroom) to an array of gourmet sandwiches and salads, not to

mention some of the most morish desserts experienced in some time, you will defi-nitely be spoiled for choice at Café 147.

My colleagues and were lucky enough to sample some of Café 147’s wares and the feedback was a resounding “yum.”

Starting with a selection from the dessert menu, we were treated to delectable and light polenta and orange cupcakes with boiled orange, polenta, macadamia and orange cream frosting, one of the most delicious chocolate brownies I’ve had (these guys really go the extra mile with this, milling their own rice) and a marbled caramel slice that was an absolute winner. Honestly, any naysayers who claim that there is no flavour in gluten-free fare have never had anything like these desserts that were literally bursting with flavour.

Next up, it was the wraps and the classic chicken ceasar was a delight from start to

finish as was the turkey wrap, served with creamy camembert, cranberry and apple splendour and baby spinach. A perfect solution to lunch on the run.

With our stomachs fit to burst, it was time to bring out the big guns. The beetroot and potato layered bake was as esasy on the eye as it was on the palate. As the name suggest, layers of beetroot and potato meld perfectly with a touch of horseradish and melted cheddar to create something truly original.

However, for me, the big star was the beef lasagne. This is a special Café 147

recipe and as soon as I took one bit of this creation, I could understand why they would want to keep the recipe under wraps. You would have to go pretty far to find a lasagne that matches this one. A side of a quinoa rice salad (with red quinoa, rice, roasted sweet potato, semidried tomato, spinach and a sesame rice wine dressing) was the perfect fresh and zesty accompaniment.

If you are looking for some quality gluten-free fare or are just a fan of food that is bursting with flavour, Café 147 should definitely be on your “to do” list.

Lake Macquarie man who fronts up one of the biggest Austrian country bands is coming home for a gig. Brett Reid will bring his band, John Deer, to Belmont Bowling Club on Friday, January 7 and Wednes-day, January 26.

John Deer was formed in 2005 by five good friends who share a love of country music. The band’s next album will be released in early 2014, and with tours planned for many venues and festivals across Europe in the near future it looks as though 2014 is shaping up to be a massive year.

The beauty of the briny deep

Renowned surfing film-maker Tim Bonython’s annual surf movie festival is heading to Newcastle next year in what promises

to be one heck of a visual extravaganza. This time around, the festival will

feature two of Bonython’s films – ‘Jour-ney’ and ‘Encoded’

“Each year, I am searching for the greatest moments the ocean can offer,” Bonython said.

“When it comes to surfers versus nature and the pure exhilaration of what the ocean can deliver, the Southern Hemisphere has the greatest playground of options on the planet.

“This year was again nothing short of wonderful experiences – we call the first half ‘Wild Australia – The Journey’ – two of our experiences were with the King,

Kelly Slater. The first one was down to Shipsterns in Tasmania and easily the best day there in years.

“Two months later I headed back to that region that I have been naming ‘Spot X’ with Mark Matthews, Richie Vass and Ryan Hipwood. The guys are confronted by flies, big sharks and perfect slabs in a location known only to its devoted locals.”

Bonython said that the second film, ‘Encoded’, was the third part in his ‘Blackwater’ series about the Teahupo’o wave on the south-western side of Tahiti.

“It’s a documentary of how Teahupo’o has evolved since the place became famous with Laird Hamilton’s ‘Milen-nium Wave Code Red’ and this year’s two amazing swells that arrived back to back where the media were the victims as well as the surfers.”

W ith their last long player ‘Shadow Art’ dropping in 2008, it has been a long time

between drinks for Newcastle-based

hip-hop crew Blades (formerly Blades of Hades), but all that is about to change when they unleash their latest effort ‘The Leak’ at the Great Northern this weekend.

MC Kid Lyrical told TE that the album charted the trajectory of the crew since their last album and the myriad styles that have influenced them since.

“’The Leak’ definitely has been a long time coming,” he said.“We wrote and recorded the tracks between 2008 and 2009 after we got back from a big Euro-

pean tour and a lot of it reflects the new influences in our music at the time. Both dub step and grime were really taking off in Europe and the UK when we were there and we’ve interpreted those influ-ences in our own unique way.

“Anyone who knows Blades can expect the same flat out lyric style and harder beats but also with a lot more things thrown in. No beat is safe. We’ve decided to release it on cassette because when we started recording mix tapes we used to do it on cassette through a double decker boom box,” he said.

I n the fertile Newcastle music scene of the mid-1990s, there were few that could match the raw kinetic

energy of angular post-poppers Sand-paper.

Their sound, that melded the best of the likes of Swervedriver, The Hard Ons and the Dead Kennedys with a decidedly Novocastrian outlook, was a favourite in venues like the Lass O’Gowrie and the Hunter on Hunter. It’s been nearly 20 years since Sandpaper – Andy Macdon-ald (bass), Geoff Mullard (guitar/vocals) and Anthony Dean (drums) first got together for a jam at Arc Up Studios and to celebrate the boys are reuniting for a special show at the Lass with fellow 90s favourites Loose and The Tax Sea Cabs.

“It’s really good to see that there has been such a positive reaction to the show on Facebook and stuff, so it should be a pretty good night” Macdonald told TE.

Despite being pretty quiet on the gigging front for some time now, save for a few pop up gigs here and there, Macdonald said the band had never really called it quits.

“The thing about Sandpaper is that we never really broke up,” he said. “We’ve always kept the association and while we’ve all been in other bands since then, it had always been in the back of

our minds to keep Sandpaper going.”As an added bonus to the gig, the band

have also released a new 7-inch single, on shiny red vinyl, featuring the band’s ubiquitous pean to finding the perfect wave, ‘Loss Toss’ as well as three cuts from their 2003 compilation album ‘Greatest Hits Volume 2’.

“We really wanted to put out a record as we’ve never done anything like it before,” Macdonald said.

“We’re all really big on vinyl so it made sense to do one ourselves.”

After the show, Macdonald stressed that the band were keen to continue and there are plans to produce new music in the new year.

Hot on the heels of their latest single ‘Smother’, Papa Vs Pretty are hitting the road for a string of dates to see out the

year which will see the Sydney-based indie-rock adventurists to Newcastle for a special all-ages show.

Drummer Tom Meyers said ‘Smother’, which is an urgent indie-rock meditation on the aggression in claustrophobia, and the first single ‘My Life Is Yours’ were a pretty fair indication of what punters could expect from their highly antici-pated sophomore album ‘White Deer Park’ which is due in February next year.

“We pretty much wrote the album

in the 18-month period after our first record [the Radiohead-esque depth of exploration of which earned them an ARIA nomination] and we wrote around 80 songs which were eventually culled down to 25 and then again to the 16,” Meyers said. We did toy, for about a week, with putting out a double album but in the end we just wanted a really strong crop of songs. If one out of four of us was unsure about a song then it didn’t make the cut – it was a very democratic process.” Meyers added that the album was a much more collaborative effort than the debut and the addition of new member Luke Laing (guitar, keys) opened up their sound considerably.

“Because we added Luke there was a lot more experimentation going on ."

Ater a massive Australian tour here last year, that included a triumphant turn at the Woodford Folk Festival, Canadian

indie-folksters Half Moon Run are head-ing back with their brilliant debut long player ‘Dark Eyes’ in tow. We sat down with frontman Conner Molander for a few quick questions.

So, you guys must be looking forward to getting back to Australia after such a successful run down here last year?

Yeah, we can’t wait to come back. Not only are the shows a lot of fun, but it’s so much nicer to be in Australia in January than in Canada.

For the uninitiated, can you give me a bit of a rundown on the musical history of Half Moon Run thus far?

We met about 4 years ago in Montreal, and started writing songs. After about a year of trials and tribulations, we signed a deal with Indica Records, and started touring internationally. Now we’re look-ing forward to writing more music and releasing a second record.

Can you tell me a little bit about the writing and recording of [debut single] Full Circle?

The chord progression came first, and it was played much more slowly in the early days. We started adding harmonies to the “turns full circle” part pretty much right away, and we liked the sound of the hook. The beat and electric guitar parts

evolved over time, and still continue to do so to this day.

Who or what was influencing the writ-ing of the album?

We weren’t actively applying any influences to the writing of the album - we were just trying to make the songs sounds the best that we could with the resources that we had. I suppose every-thing from what we ate for breakfast to the music we listened to when we were little kids influenced the writing of the record.

So, for a band that has been together for a relatively short amount of time, you have managed to squeeze quite a fair bit in. Do you still find yourselves having kind of ‘pinch me’ moments and what has been the most memorable moment on tour thus far?

Sometimes, but the daily grind of this life is pretty sobering - things have happened gradually enough that we all have a good notion of where we’re at, and what we need to do to keep moving forward. Progress brings us happiness.

If there was one thing you’d want people to take away from a Half Moon Run show, aside from some merch of course, what would it be?

Inspiration to be more creative. But if someone leaves a show just feeling happy, that’s a success.

So, after the Australian tour, what’s next on the Agenda for Half Moon Run?

Some time off to write more songs!
