Favourite Chair Café – MaitlandWe love this café! Nestled in the heart of Maitland the atmosphere and smiling faces in this eclectic make you feel at home the minute you walk through the door.

The coffee is great and there are plenty of tasty temptations on offer if you’re feeling hungry. The relaxed feeling just keeps coming as you curl up with one of the books from the shelves surrounding you and the intimate setting means that you can go in on your own and not feel at all out of place. It’s a home from home.

But, as all with good things, the experience is best shared with a friend, so the next time you fancy kicking back with a good friend over a cuppa…pick the Favourite Chair Café and tell them iMag sent you!

Sleuth at Newcastle Theatre CompanyTwo men, one woman, hundreds of thousands in jewellery… and a gun. But the only thing that matters to mystery writer Andrew Wyke is the game. And he’s about to play his biggest game yet. Milo Tindle (hairdresser and lover to Wyke’s wife) has been invited to Andrew’s mansion to talk – but is that all there is to it? The board is set, and the pieces are falling into place. Are you ready to play?Carl Gregory marks his directorial debut at Newcastle Theatre Company with Anthony Shaffer’s effortlessly entertaining Sleuth, a play that deftly mixes the dark and dangerous with the downright comical – the results of which will leave audiences utterly shocked. Spawning countless theatrical adaptations (and two feature films), Sleuth has cemented its place in theatre history as the ultimate battle of wits, with the audience walking away as the one true winner. The only mystery left to solve is why you haven’t booked your tickets already!BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL Ph 4952 4958. 3pm-6pm Mon - Fri. Book online at www.newcastletheatrecompany.com.au

The Hunter Wetlands CentreThe Hunter Wetlands Centre is a great destination for anyone based in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie or Port Stephens area over the summer holidays.Centrally located just behind Newcastle University, the centre offers the seclusion and serenity of a beautiful natural environment in combination with activities that will keep the younger set occupied and engaged.A range of walking tracks cover the 45 hectare site and walking tours operated by the centre give a fascinating insight into the its unique history - a story of community spirit and dedication that has rehabilitated disused sporting fields and a rubbish dump into a Ramsar listed wetlands of international significance.Kids can enjoy the discovery playground and discovery trail and everyone can join in a reptile tank talk featuring a range of our residents - blue tongue lizards, turtles, water dragons and even our fresh water crocs!

to bring their visitors) to explore the wetlands for only $2 entry per person!* (Adult entry to the centre is normally $10.)

Catherine Hill Bay, Lake Macquarie

Summer in Lake Macquarie revolves around the water. A natural aquatic playground, Lake Macquarie itself is twice the size of Sydney Harbour, with over 30 kilometres of pristine coastline. A refreshing swim is the perfect antidote to a hot summer’s day; Lake Macquarie has an abundance of places to go for a dip, including four patrolled, family-friendly beaches. All of them offer something unique, so be sure to experience each one while you visit!

Redhead Named for its distinctive red rocky headland, a widely recognised feature

of scenic Redhead is its historic shark-lookout tower. A great beach for families, Redhead has a popular kiosk that overlooks the surf. Treat the kids to an ice-cream and take in the view.

Blacksmiths Blacksmiths offers the best in both fishing and beach-going; its southern end is a long breakwall separating the beach from Swansea Channel. Anglers can fish off one side, whilst on the other families can enjoy the safe, patrolled swimming area.

Caves Beach Caves Beach is home to sea caves and rock pools, known for providing hours of amusement for youngsters. The best time to access the area is at low tide – you can pick up a free tide chart from the Lake Macquarie Visitor Information Centre in nearby Swansea.

Catherine Hill Bay Popular with local and visiting surfers, Catherine Hill Bay is a picturesque beach with rock platforms to explore at both ends. A unique feature of ‘Catho’ is the heritage coal-loading jetty; a photogenic reminder of the rich area’s mining history.

The Lake With 174 kilometres of foreshore, there are also plenty of spots to dip your feet around the lake. The eastern shores of Swansea, Pelican and Marks Point are home to secluded, sandy bays and clear blue water. The western shores are quiet and tranquil, with bushland growing right up to the lake in many places.

Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast.

Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the last twenty years.

The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing

tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries.

The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

Kurri Kurri is famous for its Murals, they are a wonderful expression of our history and region, and tours are available all year round, we have many coach groups coming into town to view these amazing outdoor artworks and are proud to be the biggest Mural town in Australia.

There are now over 50 murals, making Kurri Kurri the largest mural town in Australia.  New murals are currently underway.  Don't forget to look for the kookaburra in every mural, some are quite difficult to find.

To book a tour, enquire about projects contact the Kurri Kurri VIC 4936 1909.

VINTAGE: THE LOST WORKS OF MAX DuPAIN Cessnock Regional Art Gallery presents Vintage: the lost works of Max Dupain. This exhibition brings together two glorious collections of forgotten images of wine grape vintages in the Hunter - heart of Australia’s wine world in the mid-20th century - by the legendary photographter Max Dupain. Presented together the Mount Pleasant and Tulloch photographs reveal a little known part of Australia’s farming past and the labours of love which produced some of the most memorable wines of the early 1950s. Dupain took the photographs on commission as part of his commercial practice, and his skill in capturing the arcadian beauty of the everyday work of vignerons, grape harvesters and cellar hands represents a sublime encounter between the world of art and the world of wine. Vintage runs until 19th January, and will be followed from 23rd January by An Open Secret: repositioning abstraction. An Open Secret presents works from the Pandora Group of female artists from the Lower Hunter. This exhibition features works by Sally Bourke, Helen Dunkerley, Annemarie Murland, Linda Swinfield, Lezlie Tilley and Patricia Wilson-Adams.

Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style.

It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place.

Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth.

As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and

craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town.

You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth.

A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking.

Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town.

Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's

most notorious criminals.

Morpeth, the town, the heritage, the buildings and carriage ways make this a place to not only visit but make a regular event.

What to See & Do■ Morpeth is National Trust classified, so take one of the Heritage Walks - enjoy the colorful history of Morpeth and its characters - in a living museum of Australia’s past.

■ The streets of Morpeth are home to over 40 specialty shops and boutiques. Browse the gift shops, antique shops, galleries, lolly shops, a tea house, ginger beer factory and bakery.

■ Visit the Morpeth Museum housed in the old Court House built in 1862.

Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford

There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843.

Here you will discover the towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops.

First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations.

Paterson has inspired many artists to

pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style.

9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.

The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn

River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook.

For more information please go to www.apvt.com.au

What to See & Do■ Treat yourself to Sunday morning brunch at the CBC cafe.■ Sample superior oils and preserves at Bunna Bunoo olive grove.■ Experience Camyr Allyn’s inviting cellar door and beautiful surrounds.■ Pack a picnic and head to Lostock dam.■ Discover the valley’s many beautiful historic bridges and churches.
