Home away from home - What do we miss?Chatting away with friends and co-workers during a sunny lunch break I was conducting alittle research about what they miss most about their home country. Most of us are fromthe UK and Germany so some of the things may sound familiar to you, some may not. Here they are - in no particular order:

Family and friends - this has got to be the obvious choice for most of us, but quick andeasy ways to communicate (we love Skype!) can still make you feel close to them.

Food - for us Germans it's the quality of bread, cheeses and sausages but luckily we have3(!) German butchers in Nelson and plenty of fantastic bakeries that cater to our verydesire. The English amongst us are missing real english Marmite, Walker Crisps, a nicepint of Tetleys Ale in Yorkshire and mushy peas. The good news is: every supermarketnow has an international food isle with plenty of choice to feed your cravings. And the truthis, the longer you live in NZ, the more you develop a taste for the local food, which is reallyquite good.

The old salary - Most move to New Zealand for the lifestyle and not for the money. Luckilywe are constantly reminded of this when we skip out of the office after work, jump on ourmountainbikes or walk down to the beach for a swim.

Shopping - yes, the choice is a little more limited and you won't find your favourite brandshere (IKEA, H&M, M&S to name a few) but a lot of major retailers will ship internationally ifyou buy online. And New Zealand has quite a unique local craft scene with lots of handmade items that you won't find anywhere else.

Anything else? - culture, theater, movies, documentaries, football, insulated houses, double glazing, central heating and the proximity to other counties for traveling.

The new Hobbit - Watch the TrailerThe second part of the Hobbit Triology will be out in the cinemas in December, but you canalready watch the trailer here. As expected, it's sprinkled with stunning NZ scenery.

A few thoughs about the VisaApplication Process

The visa process is not quick, cheap oreasy. You might want to think of it as yourtoughest ever job application. You need topresent your best case. You need persistence and patience. Thereare many people in the immigrationpipeline to New Zealand and you will bepart of the queue. It's normal to feelfrustrated at times - especially aftermonths of silence from the authorities. You must complete the application formsperfectly. Don't consider taking shortcuts. An application that is only 99% correct willbe rejected 100% of the time. Oncerejected, you go to the back of the queueagain. The number 1 cause of failed visaapplications is filling in the formsincorrectly, or filling in the wrong forms. You need to be up to date with the rules.New Zealand's immigration system issubject to frequent changes.

UK Pension Transfer Update October 2013There has been quite a bit of confusion regarding the tax rulesfor UK pension transfers over recent years. The New ZealandInland Revenue have reviewed the laws and are in the processof making changes which are still to go through Parliament.

We have also seen various rule changes regarding the QROPSregime with the latest being introduced in April 2012 and now weare seeing new tax rules in New Zealand which will start in April

2014. Some of the key points are as follows:

Previous pension transfers going back to 2000 need to be assessed and could wellgive rise to a tax liability especially if the pensions had not previously been treatedas Foreign Investment Funds previously. In many instances a voluntary disclosureof 15% of the transfer value will need to be made.It is looking as though the 4 year exemption for transitional residents will still applytherefore allowing people to transfer under the QROPS regime tax-free during thisperiod. After this tax liabilities could be incurred. For expats or returning Kiwis who have not considered the options and are outsidethe 4 year exemption, there is the ability to transfer prior to April 2014 under the15% voluntary disclosure method. Alternatively if their pensions have been treatedas FIF assets then they can continue under the FIF regime. It is important thatanyone with pensions left in the UK consider their options now, as viabletransfers need to be completed by end of March 2014.QROPS transfers can still be advantageous depending upon clients situations. Weare seeing a worrying trend of underfunded schemes in the UK thereforeprofessional advice and analysis should be sought before making any decisions.
