EXPANDING YOUR TOOLBOX:THOUGHTS, TRAUMA AND TOXINS
In his 1910 text, The Chiropractor’s Adjuster, Dr. Daniel David (DD) Palmer identifi ed the causes of vertebral subluxation as the Three T’s— thoughts, trauma and toxins. Since that time, we have expanded our understanding of how these factors impact our body’s function, but the basic concepts Palmer laid down for the profession he founded have survived the test of time.
When our brain senses harm either from a traumatic injury, stressful thought or exposure to a toxin, it shifts into protection mode — the fi ght-or-fl ight response. Our entire body is hardwired neurologically to respond to these signals one way or another: The signals that inform the brain of our status are our “thoughts,” both from our mind and our body. While stressful mental activity includes negative, angry, fearful or depressed thoughts, physical traumas and toxic exposures represent negative “body thoughts,” infl uencing the same centres of the brain as these mental thoughts do.
Are you ready to up your game and understanding of 21st century T’s? With 7 international and local speakers shining on our Tauranga stage, you are sure to leave the weekend with new information to help you better serve your community. We’ve thrown in 2 business speakers for good measure to ensure you get the most out of the weekend.

Emma Skellern trained as an organisational psychologist. Following a period of consulting to Top 500 companies in Australia, she
transitioned to the mental health and addiction fi eld where she worked for Te Pou as a research and workforce development project lead. She now works for Unitec in their Research and
Enterprise o ce. Emma has lived experience of the extreme end of the mental health spectrum, her brother Matthew lived with
bipolar until he took his life in 2012. Emma and her parents, Graham and Philippa, are committed to contributing to a solution that reduces the appalling youth suicide rate in New Zealand. They are one of the fi ve
bereaved families featured in the fi lm Maui’s Hook which is soon to be released in local and international cinemas.
Expanding Your Wellbeing Toolkit; it’s There at a GlanceWhen I returned to New Zealand in 2010 I was shocked by the world leading youth suicide
statistics associated with our country. 8 years later I don’t have all the answers but one thing is clear to me; we need rapid system redesign if we are to have a chance of reducing the rate at
which kiwi’s take their lives every year. I would like to see more use of holistic health frameworks like Te Whare Tapa Wha, connected and multi-disciplinary health or ‘well-being’ teams that bridge
clinical and alternative therapies, harnessing of technological advances in the IoT and artifi cial intelligence space, and solutions that empower individuals, their friends and family, and the wider community to support each other to live healthy and fulfi lling lives. We can move from a surviving
state to a thriving one, I’ll share some ideas about how we might get there.
Low Carb/Ketogenic Eating and Fasting; What, Why, and How
Low carb diets have become very popular in recent times. What’s the science behind all of this and what does it have to o er us across a range of metabolic issues including neurodegenerative issues? As well, there is the new science of what happens when we don’t eat (fasting). Grant will explore low carb, especially ketogenic eating as well as fasting practice for health and well-being;
including brain health, the neuro-protective e ects of fasting and ketogenic/low carb eating.
Grant Schofi eld is Professor of Public Health at AUT. He is the director of the Human Potential centre where his research focuses on what helps people stay well and live a healthy life. Therefore he is interested in nutrition, exercise, psychology and all things which contribute to living long and healthy.
He is also the Chief Advisor Health and Nutrition for the Ministry of Education.

Research Reveals That Chiropractic Improves Quality of Life;Do Your Patients Know?
An important question to be asked by any healthcare practitioner is ‘does my form of care improve the overall health of a patient or is it just treating their symptom’? Outcome studies measuring quality of life are becoming used more often to assess the value of a health intervention and
chiropractic is no exception. This presentation will inform you on the current chiropractic literature, future research that can be undertaken, and what can you do in everyday practice to meaningfully
assess quality of life for the people that you serve.

How Your Nervous System Creates Your Reality and What We Have Been Learning About Chiropractic, Sensory Processing
and Eye Movements
Let’s look at how your nervous system creates your reality and what we have been learning about chiropractic, sensory processing and eye movements. This talk will discuss the latest in chiropractic
research and will unpack the importance of sensory processing and eye movements when addressing subluxations and working with children with learning di culties.
Dr Alice Cade is a New Zealand College of Chiropractic graduate in private practice in Auckland. She teaches the bulk of the
neuroscience programme at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic and has also just completed a Masters degree
in health science with research focusing on investigating eye tracking as a proxy for identifying vertebral subluxations. Alice believes that as chiropractors we are ideally placed to enhance nervous system function and is convinced that chiropractic care
has the potential to have a tremendous e ect on the way we process, integrate, and respond to sensory information.

The Effects of Video Games and Other Screen Media on the Human Brain
Children’s brains wire up at a furious rate, and thus powerful infl uences (like the mass media) can have a lasting impact on the way they think, feel and behave. With screen media and video
games this not only occurs through the normal ‘wiring’ of synaptic connections in response to what children experience – new research suggests that changes in brain structure and
functioning can also occur. Brain imaging studies have found consistent neural changes for two screen media phenomena: screen overuse and consumption of violent content. This talk will
examine the recent brain imaging and other scientifi c fi ndings, review the relevant psychological mechanisms, discuss implications for development, and provide some concrete suggestions for
healthy media use - things you can do on ‘Monday morning’ that can make a di erence.
Dr Wayne Warburton is a Senior Lecturer in Developmental Psychology at Macquarie University and is also a registered psychologist. He has a strong research interest in the fi elds of aggressive behaviour, media psychology and parenting. His publications in scientifi c journals and books are primarily on topics around aggressive behaviour and the impact of violent and pro-social media. He is co-author of the International
Society for Research on Aggression Statement on Media Violence, the Society for Psychological Study of Social Issues Research Summary on
Media Violence, and the world experts’ Statement on Video Game Violence in the ‘Gruel Amicus Curiae Brief’ for the US Supreme Court case of California vs.
Entertainment Merchants. He has won more than 20 awards for his scholarship and teaching, including four from the Australian Psychological Society.
